L'invention a aussi pour objet un appareil pour la mise en oeuvre dudit procédé, appareil essentiellement caractérisé par la combinai- son, à l'intérieur d'une enceinte ouverte à la partie inférieure et munie à la partie supérieure d'une goulotte d'introduction des matières à granuler; d'un organe en forme de coupe,ou de cloche renversée, tournant à grande vi- tesse et sur lequel tombent les matières liquides à granuler; d'un disposi- tif d'auto-centrage de l'organe rotatif,dispositif comportant une suspension souple qui permet à l'appareil de supporter les balourds importants pouvant se présenter en marche, sans que des vibrations soient transmises à la char- pente, ou bâti, de l'appareil;

La fig. 1 est une coupe verticale, par l'axe,de l'ensemble de l'appareil pour la granulation des scories liquides, des laitiers liquides et autres produits analogues;
La fig. 2 en est une vue en plan avec coupe par II-II de la fig.
1.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR GRANULATION OF SLAGSI- DAIRY
AND ALL OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCTS.
When it is desired to put in the most divided form possible, by grinding materials such as slag, slag, etc., it is advantageous to granulate them beforehand because the direct grinding of the cooled materials is a relatively expensive and which faces various difficulties.
The present invention relates to a process making it possible, from liquid materials (slag, slag, etc.), to their casting from the apparatus where they were formed, to obtain a product in the form of granules of. small size, product that can be stored and handled with great ease before sending it to final milling, which is then done under the best conditions.
The method object of 1-'invention consists essentially in dropping the aforementioned materials flowing, in the liquid state, through a chute, on a member in the form of a cup, or an inverted bell, rotating at high speed and the subject to the action of a cooling agent.
The subject of the invention is also an apparatus for carrying out said method, apparatus essentially characterized by the combination, inside an enclosure open at the lower part and provided at the upper part with a trough. introduction of the materials to be granulated; of an organ in the form of a cup, or an inverted bell, rotating at high speed and on which the liquid substances to be granulated fall; a device for self-centering the rotary member, a device comprising a flexible suspension which enables the apparatus to withstand significant unbalances which may occur in operation, without vibrations being transmitted to the frame , or frame, of the apparatus;
a mechanism for controlling the rotation of the rotary member, a system for cooling the granules formed, by injecting water, air or any gas; means to produce a

strong upward air stream drying the granules which fall towards the base of the appliance; finally, a device collecting the granulated material at the outlet of the device and transporting it to the place of storage.
In the accompanying drawing, there is schematically shown, by way of illustration only and without any limiting nature of the scope of the invention, an embodiment thereof taken as an example.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section, by the axis, of the whole of the apparatus for the granulation of liquid slags, liquid slags and other similar products;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof in section through II-II of FIG.
1.
In accordance with the invention, the granulation of products such as slag, slag, etc., is carried out from their fluid state, by pouring the liquid material onto a member rotating at high speed which causes it. granulation and by subjecting the granulated product thus obtained to the action of multiple water jets which ensure cooling.
In the improved apparatus according to the present invention, the rotary member 2a on which the molten product to be granulated is dropped takes the form of a cup, or inverted bell, rotating at high speed about an axis. vertical 3a. Cup 2a is preferably lined on its internal surface with either a bricklaying or a layer of refractory cement (not shown), this lining serving to protect the structure of the apparatus. .
In order to obtain small-sized granules and for the good general performance of the apparatus, it is important that the material to be granulated is distributed uniformly, under the action of the centrifugal force generated by the rapid rotation of the cup. 2a, on the internal surface thereof. On the other hand, the thickness of the layer of centrifuged material, a thickness which is great in the regions adjacent to the axis of rotation, decreases rapidly as one moves away from this axis. The rate at which said thickness decreases is a function of the shape of the section: this is determined. shape in such a way that the material is distributed without sliding and without cavitation on the internal surface of the cup.
This result is obtained by maintaining constant the average acceleration up to the edge and the shape of the latter is chosen so as to avoid the tearing of the material by the effect of centrifugal force. The curvature of the edge is chosen so as not to exceed a maximum value determined by the characteristics of the material to be granulated (taking into account the speed of rotation adopted).
Going up along the wall of the section 2a, the material forms a very thin uniform layer escaping, finally, at the periphery, forming a liquid sheet (ab, fig. 1) which is thrown at a speed significant linear, in the plane of rotation. At a relatively short distance from the edge, this sheet, under the effect of the resistance and the turbulence of the air, breaks up into a multitude of very fine particles which, projected towards the outer casing 1 of the apparatus' encounter finely sprayed water jets 16 delivered to the granulation zone by nozzles carried by the crown 10a of water supply. The solidification of the granules, accompanied by the violent evolution of vapor which occurs, bursts the aforementioned particles and gives rise to the desired formation of granules.
The rotation of the cup 2a is controlled by a motor 4, the movement of which is transmitted to the shaft 3a by means of a speed multiplier 17, a shaft 18, two angle pinions 19 and 20, a shaft 21 and a cardan joint 22.
As indicated above, it is essential, for the apparatus to operate under good conditions, that a very stable behavior of the section 2a be ensured under a load which sometimes varies abruptly. There can be no question of useful er a rigid device for supporting the shaft of said cutting and, in accordance with another characteristic
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the invention, an assembly has been produced such that the section has extreme flexibility around its position of equilibrium so that it can withstand significant unbalances without any vibrations being transmitted to the fixed part of the device.
The device used here, by way of example, achieves gyroscopic self-centering with nonlinear elastic return. This solution provides multiple advantages, with regard to both safety and the proper functioning of the device. The amplitudes, even in extreme cases of resonance, are limited without the need for energy dissipation devices. The small displacements around the equilibrium position caused by the irregularities of flow of the liquid material on the cup will not even be noticeable outside the suspension and they will help to improve the distribution of the fluid mass. This is a particularly important point for obtaining correct operation of the centrifuge cup.
The center of gravity of the assembly is located vertically above the articulation point of the system. The cup is statically stabilized by an elastic suspension constituted by six tie rods connecting to the fixed frame 1 of the device the support 23 of the bearing in which the shaft 3a of the cup rotates.
Each tie-rod is made up of two rigid bars (or tie-rods) 24 attached at one end, one to the support 23, the other to the carcass 1, and connected by their other end by means of a resilient element. stitué by cables 25 stretched between two plates 26, each of which is made integral with one of the bars 24.
The tie rods 24 located closest to the axis of the apparatus pass inside the support 23; this is chambered around the tie rods to allow water to circulate ensuring the protection of the said tie rods against temperature variations.
This suspension device achieves an elastic return (thanks to the elements 25-26) substantially linear in a region of low amplitudes which, in normal operation, is not exceeded.
Outside of this zone, the recall grows rapidly, giving the suspension a non-linear characteristic. However, the stabilization of the rotary cutting is thus facilitated over the entire speed range, including low speeds.
At rest, the device forms a rigid unit having the advantage of being light and robust, which facilitates the transport, handling and maintenance. In operation,) 'the absence of vibrations obtained thanks to the self-stabilizing properties of the suspension reduces fatigue to a minimum, which increases the resistance of mechanical parts
The granules formed are collected at the bottom of the apparatus on a conveyor (not shown) which takes them to the place of storage.
The method and apparatus described above find a particularly advantageous application in the granulation of Thomas slag used as fertilizer and which, for this purpose, must be ground to a very high degree of fineness. But they are also applicable to the granulation of all other materials such as, for example, slag or other slag.
It is understood that the details of embodiment described and shown were only illustrative and that they could be modified in various ways or replaced certain elements by equivalent elements without the economy of the invention is thereby altered. Thus, in particular, cooling by spraying water could be replaced by cooling by means of any suitable air or gases.
