PIPE PERFECTIONNEE.

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PERFECTED PIPE.
The invention relates to pipés of the kind comprising a pipe removably attached to the collar of the furnace of the pipeo
In conventional pipes of this type, the pipe stub is attached to the neck of the furnace by an extended part, the diameter of which is of the order of 5 to 10 mm., This diameter frequently exhibiting slight variations. However, these variations in dimensions make it very difficult to replace a pipe that is broken or damaged in any other way.
The object of the present invention is to obviate this drawback.
According to the invention is interposed between the pipe pipe and the collar of the furnace, a radially expandable element means being provided for subjecting said expandable element to a compression effect, by rotating part of the pipe relative to the other.
The invention also relates to the realization of said means so that their operation does not require the use of a special tool.
The invention also relates to means allowing the use of the same pipe with any pipe furnace regardless of the relative external and internal dimensions of the two elements to be assembled.
The essential characteristics of the object of the invention will emerge further from the following description of a non-limiting example of execution schematized in the appended drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a side elevational view with partial section through 'a perfected pipe; Figure 2 shows schematically., in longitudinal section and on an enlarged scale means of assembling the pipe; FIG. 3 shows schematically an alternative embodiment of the device

in figure 2.
In figures 1 and 2 we notice that the pipe is made up of a pipe .1 and a flanged furnace .2 The latter comprises a long borehole.
EMI2.1
gitudinal J, having a diameter between 5 and 10 m "3 as in the usual pipes The pipe 1 also comprises a longitudinal bore having a widened tapped part 4, in which one of the ends is screwed
EMI2.2
a ± screw with a .6 head the diameter of which is less than that of the borehole. 1 of the collar ¯2. This screw is made of any suitable material having sufficient rigidity and strength, for example metal or plastic.
The screw is screwed into the threaded borehole .4 of the pipe up to a small distance from the bottom of the borehole 4, the head of the screw having a mortise to facilitate its insertion using a screwdriver.
The screw carries a cup 2 whose outer base wall comes into contact with the undersurface of the screw head.6.
EMI2.3
Around the screw 5 is also mounted a tubular expansion element 1 made of a suitable elastic material having sufficient resistance to smoke and juice produced during use of the pipe. Many experiments have shown that polyvinyl chloride plastic is the most attractive. The inner diameter of the tubular member substantially corresponds to the outer diameter

of the screw.
Another cup 2! .. is still mounted around the screw .5., The two cups 1 and ± being disposed at opposite ends of the tubular member. , -
EMI2.5
When the screw .5., With the cups 1-: z.;., And the tubular expansion element are mounted on the pipe pipe, before the insertion in the widened part 1 of the collar the element expansion is applied over the entire length of the screw.
In order to adjust the expansion element to the collar in which it is to be slid, the screw is tightened until the middle part of the expansion element 8 is urged radially outwards so that the screw and the expansion element can be
EMI2.6
slipped into the enlarged part 2 of the collar?, with a suitable frictim effect between the expansion element ± and the enlarged part 3.
EMI2.7
By axially rotating the pipe 1, the screw 1 is further screwed into the threaded bore 9 whereby the friction between the expansion element and the wall of the enlarged part 3 increases.
'In order to prevent the collar ± from being broken when the expansion of the element is too great, said collar of the pipe can be provided with a pro-
EMI2.8
tectricé .2, of the kind used in a large number of conventional pipes. The tapped part of the borehole ± of the pipe pipe is thus used to operate the expansion element 8.
The elements 1 and 7 'are made in the form of cups in order to ensure good support on the ends of the expansion element 8.
EMI2.9
If the elements'1-: z.;. are not cup-shaped, but are made up of simple washers; a contraction of said elements would indeed cause element 8 to expand, but instead of its middle part, these would then be the two ends of the tubular element , 1 which would be curved along the surfaces of the washers, so that the effect of friction between the wall of the widened part, 2 and the middle part of the tubular element 8, d 'which would result in poor sealing and precarious, non-rigid fixing of the pipe 1 in the collar. 2. When the pipe 1 has to be separated from the collar 2, it is turned in the opposite direction from that described above,
and the effect of friction between the expansion element
EMI2.10
sion Q and the wall of the enlarged part 1 decreases until the pipe l can be withdrawn from the collar 2a
In the variant embodiment of FIG. 3, the pipe .1 has a thin extension 10, formed integrally with the pipe. The cups
EMI2.11

The free end of the extension 10 is externally threaded and receives a nut

the expansion element with a view to inserting it into the enlarged part 3 and after this insertion the frictional effect exerted by the expansion element on the wall of the enlarged part 2, and the frictional effect exerted by the cup 2 on the tightening nut 11, block the nut against any rotational movement when the pipe is rotated axially !; as a result, the extension 10 is screwed into or unscrewed from the clamping nut 11 to change the frictional effect.
It goes without saying that the invention does not remain limited to the embodiments described above, the latter being able to be varied while remaining within the framework of the invention. Thus, for example, the widened part can be provided in the pipe. 1, instead of being in the pipe collar, the embodiment of Figure 3 can also be reversed.
