BOULON EXPANSIBLE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

EXPANDABLE BOLT.
The present invention relates to an improvement to expandable bolts with their corresponding expandable sleeve.
Expanding bolts are known, introduced into boreholes made in parts which must be fixed to one another.
Said bolts are stuck in said parts after having been fitted with a nut and the wedging is effected by the expansion of a sleeve, produced so as to be able to be slipped on the bolt and being applied against the walls of the drilling. The sleeve is made of a deformable material the density of which is such that when it is compressed, the volume of the material changes only in small proportions. In known expandable bolts of this type, one end of the deformable sleeve rests against the lower surface of the bolt head and during their assembly, the sleeve can easily slide over said bolt head; therefore the fixing is less effective.
The aim of the present invention is to eliminate this drawback by inserting one end, or both, of the sleeve into a socket, made so that it can be slipped over the bolt and made of a non-deformable material, for example metal. .
A sleeve of this type can be made and sold independent of the bolt, so that anyone can make an expandable bolt for themselves by purchasing a sleeve and sliding it over a common cylindrical bolt.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, one of the ends, or both, of the sleeve is provided with a neck corresponding to the wall thickness and to the lateral length of the sleeve, so that the sides of the sleeve are level with the dimensions of the sleeve.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
To prevent rotation of the bolt relative to the nut during compression of the sleeve, the end faces of the sleeve may be provided with tabs, executed so as to engage the side faces of the nut on the bolt and thus preventing the said nut to follow the movement of the bolt during the screwing of the latter, so that the tightening of the nut on the bolt and, consequently, the compression of the sleeve, is always guaranteed by turning the bolt in the drilling of the part to fix.
The outer edge of the tabs mentioned above is suitably knurled to form a point at each end of said edge.
One embodiment, given by way of non-limiting example, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the expandable bolt.
Fig. 2 represents the deformable sleeve.
Fig. 3 is an end view of a socket.
The sleeve consists of a cylindrical tube 1 made of a deformable material, for example rubber or a plastic material. Each of the ends of the tube is provided with a neck 2 on which is inserted a sleeve 3, the thickness of the side walls of which corresponds to the depth of the neck, so that the dimensions of the tube are level with the dimensions of the sleeve .
The sleeve is slipped over a common bolt 4 and then the latter is introduced into the borehole in which it is to be fixed. By screwing the nut 8 on the bolt, the sleeve is compressed longitudinally and rests against the walls of the borehole:
The inside diameter of the sleeve 1 must be suitable for the thickness of the bolt and the outside diameter of the sleeve must be suitable for drilling the parts to be fixed, so that the bolt with the sleeve cannot rotate in the borehole during screwing. nut 8.
The end s faces 10 of the sleeve 3 are provided, for example, with three tabs 11, obtained by cutting, which project from the said end faces and the outer edge of which is provided with a knurling 12 (fig. 1). .
The sockets 3, fitted to the ends of sleeve 1, not only serve to prevent the sleeve from sliding over the bolt head while the nut is being screwed in, but also ensure that the sleeve always expands within the central part between the sleeves s, thus providing the most favorable application of said sleeve against the s walls of the borehole.
As can be seen from FIG. 1, the tabs 11 of one of the bushings are applied against the head 13 of the bolt or against a washer 14, interposed between the head of the bolt and the tabs, while the tabs of the other bush engage in the nut 8 so that the latter is prevented from rotating relative to the sleeve 1; therefore the compression of the sleeve during the rotation of the bolt 4 is guaranteed.
