On a proposé des excavateurs de ce type., dans lesquels un bras est fixé à pivotement à l'un des bras ecarteurs principaux du grappin et porte une prise pour le câble de levage, en sorte que l'extrémité de ce bras peut être relevé vers la tête du grappinLes mâchoires du grappin sont montées à. pivotement au centre sur une traverse, et un agencement comprenant (il} crochet et un loquet est prévu pour articuler la traverse au bras pivotant de sorte que la traversa est élevée pour fermer le grap- pin lorsque le câble de levage est rappelée après quoi tout l'excavateur peut être levé etla charge larguée soit en dégageant le crochet et le loquet à la main;

- la figure 1 montre le grappin ouvert prêt à être abaissé; - la figure 2 montre le grappin fermé; - la figure 3 est un détail du mécanisme de crochet et de lo- quet lorsque le grappin est fermé mais que le câble de levage est déchar- gé ; - la figure 4 montre'le grappin ouvert avec le crochet abaisse pour venir coopérer avec les machoirés; - la figure 5 est une vue du mécanisme de crochet et de loquet montré à la figure 3 comme on le voit dans le sens dela flèche aux fi- gures 1 et 3;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS IN: GRAPPLES EXCAVATORS.
The present invention relates to excavating grapples of the type in which a single lifting cable is the only one used to control all the digging, lifting and dumping operations.
Excavators of this type have been proposed, in which an arm is pivotally attached to one of the main spreader arms of the grapple and carries a socket for the lifting cable, so that the end of this arm can be raised. towards the head of the grapple The jaws of the grapple are mounted to. center pivot on a cross member, and an arrangement comprising (it} hook and latch is provided to hinge the cross member to the swing arm so that the cross member is raised to close the grapple when the lifting cable is recalled after which all the excavator can be lifted and the load released either by releasing the hook and latch by hand;
, or by lowering the grapple and unloading the lifting sand from the weight, thereby releasing the latch from the frictional forces due to the load, so that it can be released by the action of a weight.
According to the invention, in such a grapple, the hook is a claw-shaped part on which a claw-shaped latch is pivotally mounted, so that the hook and the latch taken together form a pair. claws to grip a part with which they cooperate to articulate the cross member to the pivoting arm and the latch can be released by unloading the lifting cable from the weight or, while remaining under load, by actuating a release part which strikes a blow hammer on the latch.
The load can thus be unloaded without difficulty in all circumstances ;, and this method of construction also makes it possible to have the overall height of the excavating grapple smaller at equal capacity., Than had been hitherto possible.
An example of a single cable excavator grapple according to the invention is shown in the appendices in which:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
- Figure 1 shows the open grab ready to be lowered; - Figure 2 shows the closed grapple; FIG. 3 is a detail of the hook and latch mechanism when the grapple is closed but the lifting cable is unloaded; - Figure 4 shows the grapple open with the hook lowered to cooperate with the jaws; Figure 5 is a view of the hook and latch mechanism shown in Figure 3 as seen in the direction of the arrow in Figures 1 and 3;
and Figure 6 is a view of the grapple as seen from the left in Figure 1. the macho) ires 1, 2 of the grapple are articulated by pins 3 to a very rigid cross member 4. The rear of the jaws 1, 2 is pivotally connected to pairs of main arms 5, 6 respectively, the arms 5 being pivotally connected to the grapple head 7 by the pin 8 which also forms a shaft for a guide pulley 10, and the arms 6 being welded to the grapple head 7. The upper ends of the arms 6 form bosses to receive a pivot 9 for a pulley 11.
The pulley 10 acts as a guide for the hoisting cable 12, which passes through a guide 13, passes around the guide 10 'and then around a pair of pulleys 14 unstated to rotate on a shaft 15 carried by a pair of. pulley arm 16, around pulley 11 and the second of pulleys 14, and is then anchored at 17 to the grapple head 7. Pulley arms 16 are pivotally mounted at 20 as seen in figures 1 and 6, to a pair of pieces 18 which are welded to the main arms 6 by 19 and are pivotally mounted behind the jaws on the same arc as the main arms 6
A dash-pot 21 is mounted between the grapple head 7 and the jaw 1.
A claw-shaped hook 22 is pivotally mounted on the arms 16 to 23, the metal between this pivot point and the shaft bearing 15 being reinforced by bands 24. A claw-shaped latch 25 is reinforced. pivotally mounted on hook 22 by a pivot 26, and has an extension 27 which can cooperate with a pin 28 on hook 22 to limit the extent to which latch 25 can close on hook 22. A link 29 is also mounted to pivot on the hook 22 by a pivot pin 26, and carries a pin 30 which engages in slots 31 of the arms 16 and is provided with rollers 32 rolling on tracks 33 fixed to the arm 16 A loaded lever 34, pivotally mounted on the arms 16 and 33, can cooperate with the tail 36 of the latch 25 when the arms 16 are raised towards the grapple head,
as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
When they are in this position the buffers 37 of the arms 16 cooperate with the corresponding buffers 38 of the grapple head.
The crosspiece 4p to which the spoons 1 and 2 are articulated carries in its center a cylindrical part 39 with a diameter such that the hook and the latch embrace it a little more than three quarters of its circumference, when they are brought into contact with ito This is produced as shown in figure 1, when the spoons 1 and 2 rest on the material to be hollowed out, giving slack to the cable 12, so that the arms 16 are lowered towards the position shown in phantom in this figure. If hook 22 were allowed to hang straight down from pivot 23 in this position, it would not pass to the right side of cylinder 39 as needed.
To achieve this, it is consequently pulled to the right by the rod 29, the pin 30 of which is prevented from going to the left of the slot 31 by the nose 40 of a part 41 mounted to pivot. on the arms 16 in 42. The rotation of the part 41 author of the ..pivot 42 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
limited by a pin 43 penetrating into a slot 44 of the part 41 so that when the part 41 occupies the position for which the pin 43 is at the top of the slot 44, in which it falls naturally under the effect of gravity, the nose 40 stops the pin 30. The hook 22 is thus kept far enough to the right, retort shown, to pass to the right of the part 39,
if the arms 16 are further raised in the position shown in FIG. 4. In this position the part 41 is forced upwards towards the end of the slot 44 by the cooperation of one face 45 of the part 41 with the part. 39 so that the pin 30 is released and the rollers 32 and the hook 22 can fall under the action of gravity in the position shown, in which the hook passes below and provides support for the part 39. As soon as the cable 12 is recalled, the hook 22 closes on the part 39 and the latch 25 then falls, under the effect of gravity, so as to grip the part 39 which is then raised, causing the jaws 1 and 2 to close in the position shown in figure 2.
In this position, the loaded arm 34 weighs on the tail 36 of the latch 25 but is prevented and disengaged from the part 39 by the friction existing between the latch and the side of the part 39 which constantly tends to slide along the surface. top slightly sloping from the top of the hook and which consequently weighs heavily against the latch 25.
If the grapple is now lowered so that the weight of the grapple is removed from the cable 12, the friction between the part 39 and the latch 25 is greatly reduced so that the loaded lever 34 is made able to disengage the latch. By recalling the cable 12 again, with the latch released, the hook 22 will pass laterally around the part 39, so that the jaws 1 and 2 open.
To allow the release of the load while the grapple is suspended so that all the weight is taken up by the cable 12, a loaded lever 46 is pivotally mounted at 47 on the cross member 4 and has a long extension 48 upwards. ., to which can be attached a trigger cord. A sudden jerk to the release cord causes the loaded end 49 to fly upwards and forces the nose of the latch 25 hard enough to release it from the part 39.
