<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

STABLE COLOR COSMETIC PREPARATIONS.
The present invention relates to cosmetic compositions and more particularly to brilliantine, toilet waters and perfumes which normally have a tendency to deteriorate and discolor in sunlight and which contain a particular ingredient which stabilizes the composition against weathering and discoloration.
Cosmetic preparations such as brilliantines, perfumes and toilet waters, including aftershave lotions, have been in use for a long time. In general, these compositions include a dye to impart a user-attractive color to the product.
Brillines, in general, contain an oil as the main ingredient. This oil can be a vegetable or mineral oil or a mixture of the two and it is suitably scented and colored. Perfumes and colognes are essentially solutions of perfume ingredients in alcohol or in aqueous alcohol solutions, with or without antiseptic ingredients, and they also contain a dye intended to impart an attractive color to them. . In the past, these dye-containing mixtures had a tendency to discolor quickly when exposed to sunlight.
This discoloration is due in part at least to the instability of the colorant to sunlight and it may also be due in part at least to the instability of some of the ingredients existing in the perfumes used in these compositions.
The object of the present invention is to provide cosmetic preparations of the kind described above to which is added a certain organic compound which confers on these preparations color stability.
This and other objects are achieved in accordance with the present invention by adding to these compositions a small proportion of benzoyl resorcinol. The presence of this addition agent in a brilliantin, by-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
fum, eau de toilette, aftershave lotion or the like, containing a dye, stabilizes its color surprisingly effectively.
It has been found that a proportion of benzoyl resorcinol of between about 0.005% by weight and about 1% by weight is sufficient to provide very effective color stability in cosmetic compositions of the kind described. Although, of course, the addition agent can be used in a larger amount, such an excess is not necessary for the desired result and is therefore uneconomical. In general, amounts considerably less than 1% are effective. For example, in perfumes, colognes, diaprés shaving lotions: and the like, an amount of benzoyl resorcinol of between about 0.005% and about 0.25% is sufficient.
In the case of brilliantins, as little as 0.1% is usually effective, but slightly larger amounts can be used if desired.
Particular embodiments of the principle of the present invention are illustrated by the following examples:
EXAMPLE I. (eau de toilette).
A composition having substantially the following formula is prepared by the process below:

Violet perfume oil and benzoyl resorcinol are dissolved in the alcohol base. The water and glycerin are weighed together and added slowly to the mixture of alcohol, perfume and benzoyl resorcinol. The desired colorants are then added in the ordinary small proportion (Q.S.), the eau de toilette composition is cooled and filtered.
Examined after 20 hours of exposure to the decolorimeter, the resulting product shows little discoloration. A control sample containing all of the other ingredients except benzoyl resorcinol (and combined in the same manner) discolored completely under the same conditions.

A brilliantine having the following formula is prepared as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
5.00% by weight of propylene glycol monolaurate @ 0.20, benzoyl resorcinol
EMI4.1
,) '"'.", .J ....
1.13% fragrance

100.00%. The benzoyl resorcinol and the perfume are dissolved in the propylene glycol monolaurate, and the resulting mixture is then dissolved in mineral oil, then the two dyes are introduced into the mixture and stirred.
After 24 hours in the decolorimeter, the brilliantine remains clear and its color has changed very little. '
A brilliantine prepared in exactly the same way, but without the benzoyl resorcinol or the propylene glycol monolaurate in which the benzoyl resorcinol is dissolved shows a dark brown precipitate after 24 hours of exposure in the decolorimeter, the resulting mixture having consequently lost its sound. merchant appeal.
The role of the propylene glycol monolaurate is that of a coupling agent, that is to say a third solvent for mineral oil and benzoyl resorcinol. Instead of or in combination with propylene glycol monolaurate, any other suitable solvent can be used in which the benzoyl resorcinol is soluble and which in turn is soluble in the mineral oil of brilliantin. Among these suitable solvents, mention may be made of glyceryl triricinoleate, octadecyclic alcohol and cyclohexanone.
In some cases, it may be desirable to include in the brilliantine composition a minor proportion of a vegetable oil, such as almond oil, olive oil, castor oil, peach kernel oil or the equivalent, in case an additional tonic effect on the skin is desired. The nature of the dyes and perfumes used in the composition of the present invention is moreover not critical and cosmetics experts can choose these products from a wide variety. The perfume is chosen for the purpose of masking any undesirable odor, if any, from any of the other ingredients. The dyes must also be soluble in the vehicle which forms the component. cosmetic sition.
Thus, in the case of brilliantin compositions, it is preferable to use oil-soluble dyes and perfumes, and in the case of colognes and aftershave lotions, it is desirable to use. use dyes and fragrances which are soluble in the alcohol-aqueous vehicle. Solvents other than
EMI4.2
1-Alcohol, ethyl alcohol, etc. in toilet waters, etc., but in general alcoholic solvents are preferred and, among them, ethyl alcohol is particularly suitable for use in compositions of this kind.
It has also been found that cosmetic compositions which contain benzoyl resorcinol are useful as sunburn preventatives. Benzoyl resorcinol apparently acts as an absorber of ultraviolet rays and prevents these harmful rays from burning the skin.
This property of the added benzoyl resorcinol apparently works in the same way in brilliantines, colognes, perfumes, aftershave lotions, etc., ie it prevents the destructive action of the rays.

ultraviolet on the dyes contained in these mixtures and thus stabilizes them against discoloration.
The invention is obviously not limited to the particular embodiments which have been described by way of examples and one would not depart from its scope by making modifications thereto.
