APPARE IL DE FABRICATION DE PIECES CREUSES EN MATIERE
PLASTIQUE.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Figs. 1 and 2 show in particular a machine 15 for manufacturing hollow plastic parts, in which several groups of part forming molds 16 progressively pass through a series of peripherally spaced areas, namely a loading area A. and parts unloading, a zone B for molding and preliminary hardening of the parts, a zone C for hardening the parts and a zone D for cooling the molds.
According to Figs 1 and 6, the whole of the machine can be enclosed in a casing 17, provided on one side at least with doors 18 allowing access to zone A for loading and unloading the molds. the upper part of a pipe 19, through which steam or other gases can be discharged by any suitable means (not shown).

The elements of the cavity are of a non-porous material such as aluminum, steel or other metal, and may be of any shape, but by way of example they have been shown to be hemispherical in shape. view of manufacturing hollow elastic balls R, fig. 3a.
In all cases, the walls of the half-elements are relatively thin and of substantially constant thickness, the major part of their outer surface being free and unobstructed, so as to be exposed in a uniform manner and as perfect as possible to the action of a heating and cooling fluid and to ensure efficient transmission by conduction of heat in both directions through the surface of the mold cavity of the part, as described later. The edges in contact with these half-elements have complementary grooves 28, FIG. 3 and 7, so as to form an inner wall with a smooth surface for making hollow plastic parts, without joints, such as R.
According to fig. 1, 2, 5, 7 and 8, the groups of molds 16 are removably mounted to be transported in the manner described

A go shaft leaves freely from the shaft plate 2, a along the same axis as the truncated shaft 33, passes through the central holes of the

plates g ± and 2 of the molds, the latter being clamped together against the shaft plate and stacked on top of each other by means of a handle nut 30 which screws onto the projecting free end of the shaft and which rotates against the outermost plate 23. The molds are thus easy to dismantle and reassemble for loading and unloading operations in zone A.
Each hollow arm 37 can rotate about its axis due to the fact that it rotates between spaced apart bearing surfaces of a shaft 40 mounted in a removable and non-rotating manner in bushings 41 forming part of the hub. The rotational movement around the fixed shaft communicated to the hollow arm 37 by a device described below, rotates the group of molds in a given direction around the axis of the shaft 40, at the same time as it rotates. rotates it in the perpendicular direction around the axis of the truncated shaft

The timer 7 comprises an automatically operating device controlling a magnetic clutch or other suitable device (not shown) so that at the end of each quarter turn of the hub 38 bringing the respective groups of molds 16 into the areas

respective A, B, 0 or D9 the motor jà stops causing consequently the stopping of the rotational movement of the hub 38 for a period of a determined period of time the timer functioning automatically so as to trigger again the rotational movement of the hub at the end of each of these periods.
As has already been said, two mechanisms functioning independently

sufficiently are used to rotate the hollow arms 32 on the -40 shaft of the hub, one of these mechanisms rotating the arms to perform a certain function
EMI4.5
while the hub 38. is rotating, and the other rotating each arm 2 in the same way to perform a different function while the mold groups of the respective arms are in the molding and pre-hardening area B of the parts., the hub being stopped.
The first mechanism of
EMI4.6
rotation of the molds is shown in fig. 129, p5 and 8 and comprises a bevel wheel 60s wedged on each of the arms 37 and rotating with it and meshing with a bevel wheel 61 of larger diameter, suitably supported in a fixed position on the upper end of the the tubular column 46 and concentric with the axis of the vertical central shaft 44. A portion 62 (FIG. 1) of the wheel 61 does not have teeth on an angle at the center of approximately 90 and extends radially outwards by an arcuate raceway 63 of the same length supported in an appropriate manner by the wheel 61 and on which
EMI4.7
rollers 6 6. mounted on opposite sides of the arms 37.
This device is constructed in such a way that when each rotary arm 32 comes into its stop position and moves away from it in the loading zone A9 (fig.l) 9 between the limits of the aforementioned angle the large wheel 61 cannot rotate the rotary arm in question. At the same time, the proportions between the teeth of the wheels are chosen so that the arm 37 has rotated to bring the group of molds 16 which it carries in a vertical position when the wheel 60 of smaller diameter has left the toothed portion of the large wheel 61., so that the rollers 64, can roll freely on the raceway 63 and keep the group of molds in the non-rotating freeze lifting position 2
EMI4.8
when hub 38. is stopped in zone A by limit switch 2i (fig.9).
Zone B has a casing 100 in which the successive groups of molds 16 are enclosed during the preliminary curing operations. This envelope 100 has the general shape of a drums FIG. 10 and 11, and its dimensions are sufficient to accommodate each group of molds as it rotates around its arm 11. The casing has a fixed lower part 101 suitably supported on the base of the machine by feet 102 and a movable cover 103 which can be lifted into the position of FIG. 10 to allow each group of molds 16 to enter and exit the casing.
The cover 103 comprises in the lower edge of its interior vertical wall a notch 104 open at the bottom and through which one of the arms 37 can pass when the cover is lowered, as shown in FIG. 11 and in dotted lines in FIG. A frame comprising vertical members 105 joined by a cross member 106 passes over the casing 100 and carries the mechanism for raising and lowering the cover.
Flexible cables 107 and 108 are fixed respectively to the cover 103 at spaced points, fig.10.
EMI4.9
These cables pass over pulleys 109s1.109111 and 112 and go towards. the bottom outside the vertical member 105, where they are fixed on a

vertically movable counterweight 113. The counterweight 113 effectively balances the weight of the cover 103. The lower end of the counterweight is suitably attached to a piston rod 114 of a cylinder.

115.9 and compressed air or other motive fluid can be admitted and escaped from the opposite ends of this cylinder, so as to raise and lower the cover 103. as shown in the drawings and
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of the above description.
The arrival of the working fluid in the cylinder 115 is adjusted so as to raise the cover 103 when the arms 37 are brought by the central shaft 44 between the successive zones and to lower it while the arms 37 remain in the various areas.
A pipe 116 pierced with holes is arranged in the lower part 101 of the casing 100 and a heating fluid, such as steam, is admitted through this pipe and its holes 93 inside the casing when this is done. that it is closed.
A control switch 123, fixed to one of the vertical elements 105, is arranged next to the upper or open portion of the cover 103 As can be seen, this switch is not actuated and is not activated. closes only when the cover is lifted for the admission of a group of molds into the casing.
For simplicity, the remainder of the description of the machine 15 will relate to the cycle of operating movement of a group of molds 16, it being understood that the other three groups of molds progress simultaneously through the same stages of operation.
When the group of molds 16 is in a fixed vertical position, during a determined stop period during which the group does not turn the operator accessing zone A through the doors 18 of the casing removes the portions one by one. of mold 21 and 22, extracts the previously molded parts R from their molding elements and re-stacks the mold portions with the predetermined quantities of fluid plastic material (described later) contained in these elements. Shortly after the mold portions The molds were thus re-stacked and clamped on each other by the nut 30. the electric timer 57 operates so as to continue to rotate the central shaft 44 and bring the arm 37 of the zone A into a position hub stop 38,
in which the arm is in the preliminary hardening zone B of the part. The cover 103 of the casing 100 rises during this movement so as to allow the group of molds 16 to enter the casing following the path indicated in phantom in FIG. 10.
During movement in zone B, the small wheel 60 engages the large wheel 61 and swings the group of molds 16 so as to bring it into the vertical downward position shown in dotted lines on. fig. 10.
This movement causes the group of molds to tilt in the lower part 101 of the casing 100 then the movable cover 1a) descends under the effect of an appropriate command and the notch 104 is placed around the arm 37. It has been observed that that a suitable stopping period of the groups of molds in zone A and therefore also in zones B, C and D is about seven minutes., but it may be shorter or longer depending on the conditions. .
The stopping of the central shaft 44 in the zone B causes the stop of the rotational movement of the arm 37 due to the meshing of the wheels 60 and 61. However, it is advisable to rotate the group of molds 16 around. of the aforesaid axes forming an angle between them, while the molds are exposed to the relatively moderate action of heating by the free steam while they are enclosed in the casing 100 at zone B (figs 1, 10 and II) the mold being cold., or approximately at ambient temperature, when it enters the casing 100.
Consequently, to make the group of molds take this compound rotational movement when the arm 37 is stopped in zone B, a small sector 67 of the toothed portion of the large wheel 61 is fixed on an articulated lever 68. on the fixed column 46 so as to base downwards and to cease to be in engagement with the bevel wheel 60 of the rotary arm 37 when the hub 38 is stopped, for example by means of a cylinder 69 actuated by a fluid and arranged between axes of oscillation on the lever 68 and a console 70 integral with the column 46.
At about the time when the central shaft has thus stopped and sector 67 has ceased to be entangled with a second front wheel.

The rotational movement of the wheel 72 for the aforementioned purpose is obtained by a continuous chain 83 passing over a chain sprocket 84

As a result, the continued movement of the machine with a view to removing the group of molds 16 from the zone B depends on the position

end of the arm 12 and the opening of the cover 10 of 1-9envelope.
The engaged wheels 11 and 22 rotate the arm 37 around its shaft 0 fig. 8, so as to make the group of molds oscillate along a radius located in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the arm. At the same time., This rotational movement of the arm 37 causes the toothed wheel 43 to roll.

and preliminary hardening begins, the molds are relatively cold, or at least at a temperature below the melting or solidifying temperature of the plastics material and then steam is gradually made to flow into the casing 100 so that the material begins to harden, and when the part R has taken all its thickness, the material which constitutes it is melted or polymerized in part and has a soft consistency similar to that of a gel.
For this purpose, steam can be made to enter the casing 100 through the holes 93 of the steam pipe 116, fig.7. If the group of molds turns in a cold state, that is to say without the steam coming, for 2 minutes for example., A thin layer of fluid resin is applied first on the exposed portions of the mold. the surface of the molding cavities, and as the steam heating operates for the remainder of the 7 minutes, the heat gradually hardens the layers which gradually form on top of each other.
At the end of the aforementioned pre-hardening period, the electric timer 57 operates to first lift the cover 103 of the steam casing 100, then to stop the rotational movement of the arm. support of the group of molds 16 in a vertical position directed downwards, as has been said, then to turn the central shaft 44 again by a quarter of a turn to bring out the arm 37 from envelope 100 and pass it from zone B into zone C, in which it stops again because another arm 37 for supporting a group of molds entering zone A comes into contact with the arm 56 of the limit switch 35. Coming from zone B to zone C,
the arm 37 rotates around its axis due to the fact that the wheel 60 has come into engagement with the large bevel wheel 61 and that the sector 67 is raised so as to return to its position in the wheel under the action of the cylinder 69 actuated by the timer at the start of the movement of the hub, as has been said.
This rotational movement of the arm causes the group of molds to oscillate from its downward position, shown in dotted lines in FIG. 10, to an upward facing position, continuing its circular or looping movement in a clockwise direction., Then up and down following an arc of a circle to bring it into its position of stop in a tray 96 open at the top fig. 1 and 12, containing molten paraffin ,,, heated glycerin or other heated fluid. To heat the paraffin P, for example, and melt it the bottom 96 can be equipped with electric resistances and heat insulated, fig. 12, and include a suitable thermostat (not shown) so as to keep the temperature of the paraffin constant to within plus or minus about two degrees.
The descent movement thus obtained group of molds 16 in the tank 96 has the effect of rapidly immersing the group of molds in the molten paraffin P or other liquid heated to a vulcanization temperature relatively high compared to the temperature of the steam. in the casing 100. The group of molds 16 being thus rapidly immersed in the heated liquid P suddenly takes the same temperature as the liquid and is maintained at this temperature for about seven minutes, by way of example, during which the parts previously hardened in the molds melt sufficiently, harden or polymerize completely to be able to be demolded.
At the end of the hardening period in zone C, the timer 57 again turns the central shaft '' and the hub 38 by another quarter of a turn so as to bring the arm 37 of the zone C in zone D, and the rotational movement of the arm 37 resulting from the meshing of the wheels 60 and 61, causes the group of molds 16 to come out of the tank 96 'following an arc of a circle in the direction of clockwise, fig. 12, thus completing an inner loop movement, as indicated by the successive imaginary positions of fig. 13, and similar to the looping movement of the group entering the steam chamber 100 and sortanto It is easy to see by referring to fig.
13 that this group loop movement

of molds entering the various zones and exiting first in the rear following an arc of a circle descending from an anterior position in relation to the front of the machine, then ascending and rearward following an arc of circle completing the mouth, not only has the effect of draining the fluids from the outer surfaces of the molds of the groups 16, but also very important in that it reduces the space required for the various molding operations. immersion of mussels.
It should be noted that when the group of molds enters and leaves each zone B, C and D, its circular arc movements compensate for the forward movement of the arm 37 with the central shaft 44 and the hub 38 ,
When the rotary arm 37 thus comes to a stop position in zone D, it oscillates downward during the first half of this looping movement and comes to a stop in a downward position in a cooled cooling tank 97. for example by circulation ¯ of water W, so as to lower the temperature of the molds and the parts they contain to allow the operator to grip them, and to make the molds take a desired temperature, lower than that steam in chamber 100 of zone B,
for example between room temperature and approximately 65 ° C.
When the group of molds 16 has remained stationary in the cooling tank 97 for the time set by the timer 57, the central shaft 44 and the hub 38 again rotate as described so as to complete the process. ascending circular arc of the loop and oscillating the group of molds 16 towards its upward position of FIG.
2, in which the arm 37 stops again during this period.
In this last position., The group of molds 16 is in the vertical position described previously, in which the molds 20 can be opened by removing the nut 30 of the shaft 29, to unmold the finished bales R., And to rest the molds. portions of molds by stacking them and squeezing them after having filled them with a determined quantity of liquid plastic. Group 16 is thus ready to complete another complete cycle passing through respective zones B, C and D.
The machine is particularly suitable for molding elastic or rigid parts of non-aqueous, thermosetting, or fusible plastic. A known type, which occurs in the free-flowing state, may have the consistency and viscosity of. a thick edible cream., has a cold tendency to adhere to the surface portions of the mold cavities as the mold turns and undergoes preliminary hardening when heated in the mold at a relatively low temperature. a soft gel-like consistency, but which when heated to a relatively high temperature, assumes a quite hard consistency sufficient to enable the finished part to be demolded.
Plastics of the type suitable for this purpose are natural or synthetic resins in admixture with plasticizers if they are already polymerized, in admixture with a plasticizer if it is a monomer or a mixture of monomers. or viscous polymers, in admixture with a curing agent if it is a synthetic resin which cures under the action of heat. One material which gives good results in this connection is a so-called "Geon Paste Resin 121 'polyvinyl resin prepared by the" BFGoodyear Chemical Company "suspended in a suitable plasticizer such as tricresyl phosphate, Butyl phthalate, etc. or any other plasticizer for polyvinyl resins.
The polyvinyl resin can consist of acetate chlorides, polyvinyl acetochloride or any other polymerized resin. It is also possible to use polymers prepared in advance of single or mixed monomers mixed or not with plasticizers to which a polymerization catalyst has been added and which, by heating, transform the mass into a gel of variable hardness depending on the degree to which the operation. melting or polymerization was continued and depending on the proportion of plasticizer added.

The process applied does not form part of the invention9 but the machine according to the invention can be used to carry out the implementation of a process consisting generally in cold distributing the mixture of liquid resins in the molds. to gel
the resin under the action of a moderate amount of heat, to harden the resin at high temperature, and then to cool the molds.
While a given group of molds 16 is thus stopped in po-

fixed upright position in the zone A9 freezes 1 and 2fl the molds 20 of this group are opened to unmold the finished anterior hollow parts R and immediately put the molds back in place by clamping them and stacking them with a determined quantity of non-aqueous liquid plastic resin, contained in the molding cavities of the parts. During this phase of the opera-

tion the groups of molds are relatively cold at about room temperature, since they were previously treated for this purpose by a cooling fluid W in zone D.
At the end of this mold loading period, the group of molds oscillates in an arc of a circle coming into its position directed downwards in zone B, shown in dotted lines on the figure.

The immersion in the molten paraffin causes the parts R to 11, pre-molded gel state9 contained in the molds of group 16s 1-the action of a relatively high temperature and sufficient to cause the fusion or complete polymerization of the resinous material chosen. Since this immersion period is relatively short and the tem-

Temperature is substantially constant during immersion; finished parts do not over-ulcanize, change color, burn or otherwise be damaged by excessive temperature.

At the end of the melting period in zone CD the hub 38 again turns a quarter of a turn and stops so as to bring the group of molds 16 in question again in the inverted or directed position. down into tank 97 of zone D, and immersing it in cooling water W to cool the molds 20 and the parts R therein. The molds thus cool in a suitable manner for another complete period of the molding operations of the parts ,,, so as to make them easier to handle and to be able to unmold the parts R, then the hub 38 again turns a quarter of a turn to bring the group of molds into upright position in zone A.
The machine thus constructed and improved makes it possible to manufacture hollow plastic parts satisfying the characteristics.
