PROCEDE POUR AMELIORER LES PROPRIETES SE'RESISTANCE ET DIMINUER LA
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
EXEMPLE I.

PROCEDURE FOR IMPROVING RESISTANCE PROPERTIES AND REDUCING THE
EMI1.1
PERMEABILITY 1 L 9 EAU DE "% 1-àNWS HYDRAUDIQUES.
Most hydraulic binders, especially cements, are difficult to mix with water because the surface tension of water lowers the suitability of powdery cements to wetness. Addition materials such as sand and gravel, for example, which are added to the cement during the working of the latter, also offer more or less resistance to the wetting by the mixing water. For this reason, in practice, when preparing plastic mortars or concrete, one is obliged to work with much larger quantities of water than those which would be chemically necessary.
This excess water, unwanted, exerts a detrimental influence in that it evaporates during the setting and drying phenomenon of the mortar or concrete, so that pores remain which pass through the mortar or concrete, generally in the form of capillaries. These respectively capillary pores are probably the reason why the resistance and the water permeability of the cement, mortar or concrete set leave something to be desired.
It is already known that these unwanted properties of hydraulic binders can be improved by adding to the binders or the mixing water necessary to work them small amounts of material which decreases surface tensions. The species, already recommended for the purpose referred to above, are found, for example, in the resolution products of albumin, in humic acids, in lignin-sulfonic acid salts, in oleic acid salts. , in stearic soaps, in resin soaps or combinations of triethanolamineo
The invention below provides a new means of improving the resistance and water permeability properties of hydraulic binders,
properties which are distinguished by a much better action than that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
which could be obtained with the means known hitherto. This favorable action is obtained, according to the invention, by adding to the hydraulic binders or to their mixtures with sand, gravel or other materials, or to the mixing water necessary to work them, quantities relatively low, which generally do not exceed 0.2 to 0.3% (based on the hydraulic binder) of combinations corresponding to the general formula:
R1 (SO3H) x or R1R2 (SO3H) x or salts thereof.
In the above formulas, by R1 is meant a straight or branched aliphatic chain of hydrocarbons, which contains approximately the same number of carbon atoms as the saponifying fatty acids, i.e. 8 to 20 carbon atoms; on the other hand, it should be understood by R2 an aromatic nucleus, for example a benzol or naphthalin nucleus. The sign x represents a number which lies between 1 and 3. Among the combinations corresponding to formula 1, there are therefore aliphatic sulfonic acids or their salts which, under the name "mersolates" for example, have become easily accessible. .
These "mersolates" include combinations which form when sulfur dioxide and chlorine are allowed to act on aliphatic hydrocarbons, possibly under the influence of short-wave light, an operation which followed by saponification of the obtained sulfochlorides. However, instead of these "mersolates", other aliphatic sulphonic acids of similar composition but obtained by other means can also be employed in the manner provided for by the invention. Here we can mention, for example, the acids of mahogany (Mahoganysäure) obtained during the acid refining of mineral oils. Among the combinations of formula 2 are aralkyl sulfonic acids or their salts.
These combinations can be obtained easily by treating aliphatic hydrocarbons with halogens, chlorine in particular, by condensing the halides obtained, according to the principle of the known Friedel-Krafft reaction, with aromatic combinations such as benzol. , toluol or naphthalene and finally sulfonating the aralkyl combinations obtained.
The action of these materials, when they are employed as provided for in the invention, consists, among other things, in that, for the preparation of plastic mixtures of cement, mortar or concrete, much less water is required. and in that these mixtures exhibit, after setting, a much greater resistance to bending and compression as well as a better permeability to water than when the said materials were not employees. In this connection, it should be mentioned as another advantage of the new addition materials the fact that the progress made does not entail any drawbacks, for example the slowing down of the phenomenon of setting of the hydraulic binders observed when 'Certain known sealing products are used.
It is not absolutely necessary, according to the invention, that these new additives be used neat; can also be used mixed with each other or mixed with other cementitious sealants such as, for example, alumina resolution products of the known kind, or mixed with sapo products. - Resins nification- among which special mention should be made of the product known under the trade name "Vinsol-Resin". It is astonishing to note that, by employing such mixtures, it is very often possible not only to add to the favorable influence of the various elements but also, in addition, to improve this influence still further.
A few examples will further illustrate the present invention.
EXAMPLE I.
A mortar mix, consisting of 1 part by weight of cement and 6 parts by weight of mixed gauge sand, was made into a plastic mortar, with 12-13% water. With this mortar, we prepared the beams

for bending test and the plates for water permeability test, as prescribed in the standards. A test was carried out with pure water and a test with a mixing water to which had been added, per 1000 cm 3, 3.5 grams of sodium mersolate. The test pieces first remained in the molds for one day and then for 28 days under damp sheets until the resistance and water permeability tests had been carried out.
The results of the resistance tests were as follows:

The water permeability tests were carried out with the Burghartz apparatus as follows: 5 hours at the pressure of 1 m water column, 5 hours at the pressure of 3 m water column and 5 hours at the pressure of 1 m water column. 4m column of water; they gave the following results:

By varying the addition of mersolate, one can naturally increase or decrease the effect of this product.

a) We first made a test as follows:
1 part of Portland cement and 6 parts of the sand mixture were mixed as described above and then a well-working mortar was made with water.
From this mortar, as usual, test plates were prepared which, after days of soaking under damp sheets and 21 days in the air, were tested as to their resistance to flexion and compression.
The figures shown under number 1 in the table below represent the average of 9 different tests. b) the same cement-sand mixture was worked with water containing 71 grams of Vinsol per 100 kilos of cement. With the mortar obtained, test plates were prepared, by proceeding as mentioned under a), which plates we then tested as to their resistance and water permeability. The results are shown under number 2 in the table below. c) A mixing water was used containing, per 100 kilos of cement, 36 grams of Vinsol and 36 grams of Mersolate H. (sodium alkyl sulfonic acid). For the rest, we proceeded as indicated under a).
The results of the resistance test are given under number 3 in the table below.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
d) For the mixing of the cement-sand mixture, water was used with the addition of benzol alkyl sulfonate of German origin (Basopal), then the remainder was carried out as indicated under a). The results obtained are shown under number 4 in the table below. e) The cement-sand mixture was worked with water containing, per 100 kilograms of cement, 36 grams of alkyl benzol sulfonate and 36 grams of alkyl sulfonate then proceeded, for the remainder, as indicated under a) . The results obtained are shown under number 5 in the table below.
