VANNE'D'ARRET.
'

THE STOP VALVE.
The object of the present invention is to improve the shut-off valves capable of withstanding relatively high pressures and comprising a suitably driven shutter covered with an elastic membrane controlling an opening in a pipe in line with said valve. stop.
In accordance with the invention, a relatively thin sheet of elastic material is used as membrane for this purpose, matching the external shape of the shutter body and the peripheral edge of which is fixed in a sealed manner to the shutter housing. the valve on one side of the duct which passes through the latter, so that the part of the membrane adjacent to this edge retains the possibility of deforming by bending between its end edge fixed to the casing and the central part applied on the body of the shutter to allow the latter coated with the corresponding part of the membrane to come into contact with the opposite wall of the pipe and to leave it freely thanks to the deformations undergone by the peripheral parts of the membrane .
'
Two preferred embodiments of a shut-off valve according to the invention have been shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a view in longitudinal section of a shut-off valve according to the invention and of neighboring parts of the associated duct, the valve being shown closed.
Figs. 2 and 3 are cross sections of the same device for two different positions corresponding to the beginning of the closing and to the complete closing of the valve.
Fig. 4 is a cross section of a variant of the membrane carried by the shutter.
In the drawings, there is shown at 1 the body of the shutter formed by a weight whose vertical movements with respect to the channel of the duct 2 are provided by means of a control rod 3 articulated in 4 on the weight, this fixing being effected by

sliding limp while leaving the flyweight a possibility of movement as a result of a slight play, and that with a perfect seal with respect to the seats provided on the duct 2.
The shutter membrane 5 mounted on the weight 1 by a simple covering envelops the head of the latter, preferably hollowed out at 6 to reduce its weight, the central part of the membrane 5 of relatively small dimensions exactly the shape of the weight 1 which can moreover be modified at will and the periphery of this membrane is secured to the fixed part of the duct, for example by clamping this periphery at 7 between two fixed parts 8 and 9 clamped one on the one. 'the other by bolts to close the valve housing, part 9 being integral with duct 2.
By comparing the extreme positions of
EMI2.1
the shutter-the shown in figs. 1 elt 3 of ,, the average position-represented in fig 2, it can be seen that the flexibility of the membrane allows it a completely free movement on a remarkable stroke corresponding to a perfect closing and opening of the duct . The: peripheral part of the membrane preferably slightly stretched when closing (freeze 1) takes a position of equilibrium at an intermediate point of the stroke, as shown in fig 2, beyond which the peripheral part curves slightly to fit between the shutter weight 1 and the upper part 8 of the valve housing.
During this movement, the membrane remains adherent to the groove 10 formed at the upper part of the weight.
Fig. 4 shows a variant in which the membrane 6 - comprises a more important peripheral part so as to affect the pleated shape of a bellows, which facilitates the movement of its peripheral part inside the housing of the valve.
The operation of the new device is obvious since by acting on the handwheel 11 for. raising or lowering the weight 1, the peripheral part of the membrane 5 is forced to fold and unfold while the central part of the latter ensures either a clean closure, as shown in FIG. 1, .is an opening which is also straightforward (fig '2), the pressure of the liquid acting on the membrane covering the obturator in the same way as in previous devices.
Of course, numerous modifications can be made to the present device without departing from its spirit, in particular as regards the method of attachment of the periphery of the membrane to the housing of the valve and the shape. given to the shutter more especially in its upper part determining the curvature given to the peripheral part of the membrane and finally to the control mode of the shutter, the exact arrangement of which has no direct relationship with the operation of the the shutter and its membrane.
