<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

AUTOMATIC RIGGED-SHAPED FEEDER FOR THE FATTENING OF LIVESTOCK,: ESPECIALLY PORKS.
The present invention relates to an automatic feeder, preferably of rectilinear shape, for fattening cattle, in particular pores, by means of a pourable feed, such as grain, oatmeal, porridge. bran, corn flour and similar foods which must be introduced, in a dry state and in measured quantities, into a trough.
The automatic feeder, object of the present invention, aims to achieve the best possible use of the food, by preventing, in particular, that the animal absorbs, at once, large amounts of dry food: introduction of food is discontinuous, in the slurry, so that the animal is forced to chew it completely. The. device for the discontinuous introduction of food into the trough is instinctively actuated, by eating by the animal and allows a previously measured quantity of mange contained in the appropriate reservoir to flow into the trough.
The. Feeder is specially adapted to allow., The supplementary fattening of the cattle between the main meals.
In an advantageous embodiment of the present invention, a food reservoir is in communication, through an opening, with the trough into which the intake device which the animal instinctively actuates, penetrates, so that the food collects. flows from the tank into the trough in quantities proportional to the adjustable size of the opening.
Other details and features will emerge from the description of one of the embodiments of the invention, description given below, by way of non-limiting example, and with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a side sectional view of the feeder.
Figure 2 is a partial front view.
FIG. 3 is a view of the device for adjusting the opening.
Figure 4 is a schematic view of a set of several juxtaposed feeders.
As shown in Figure 1, a triangular cross-section tank 'is integral with a trough 8. The tank consists of a front wall 1 with slides, a rear wall 5 and a cover 6. fixed by the hinges 7 to the rear wall. The interior of the reservoir is connected with the trough 8 by an opening in the form of a transverse slit. The trough and the reservoir are joined to one another, so as to form a block, by end plates 9. The aforementioned opening is formed by the front wall 1 and the flat surface 8a of the trough. The front wall 1, under the action exerted by two threaded rods 11, slides along its plane and thus determines the large cover.
At the front wall 1, a device 2 and 16 is provided for feeding the food, -, it allows the latter to be released which is accumulated in the tank so that it can flow into the trough in quan - dosed amounts, varying according to the determined size of the opening.
The enlargement or reduction of this opening correspondingly regulates the feeding of food into the trough. The device 2 and 16 instinctively operated by the animal is fixed by a suitable means, for example, by bolt and nut, to the front wall 1. With a flat bar 2, movable around a pivot 3 constituted, for example, by an assembly of bolt and nut, comprises plugs 16 directed towards the interior of the reservoir and intended to increase the efficiency of the device. On the other hand, its end opposite to that in connection with the pivot 3, is curved and passes through the opening; it has a shape such that the animal can move the flat iron 3 on the inner surface of the front wall 1.
As shown in FIG. 2, the lower part of the front wall 1, which forms an opening with a flat surface of the trough, shows at its end an arc of a circle whose radius corresponds to the radial length of the pivoting flat iron 2. The length of the string of said bow corresponds to approximately the width of a feeder element. The number of feeder elements is, in theory, unlimited.
The feed intake device described above and operated by the animal, could also be adapted, by a bolt and nut system, or in any other suitable way, to the rear wall 5 of the. tank. Figure 2 shows] .- opening formed by the end, cut in an arc of a circle, of the front wall 1 with one of the flat surfaces of the trough.
In this embodiment of the present invention. Cover cannot be completely closed off by the front wall 1. If 1-'on moves the flat bar 2 towards one of the sides of Park circle. Cover can be completely closed, in the central part of an element of the feed trough, by 1-lowering the front wall 1; in such a case, the movement of the flat bar 2 is considerably limited, which, for some species of mangel. is sufficient to interrupt the admission of the noarriture in the trough.
The flat iron 2 could be locked in its lateral position by suitable means, not shown in the accompanying drawings; for example, the curved part of the flat iron could be fixed at each end of the arc of a circle by a locking system mounted on the front wall 1.
The opening could be formed by two parts in the arc of a circle, one represented by the end of the front wall 1, the other by the bottom.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the trough. In this case.) The complete closing of the opening would be limited by the thickness of the part of the flat bar 2 passing through it. However, if a notch was provided in the center of the arc. circle formed by the end of the front wall 1 and if a buttonhole made in the latter allowed the vertical displacement of the pivot 3, the part of the flat bar protruding through the opening could be lodged in the aforementioned notch: thus the opening could be completely blocked.
In the case of automatic feeders having to include a relatively large opening, the latter could be formed by the right end of the front wall and the flat surface of the trough; the locking system described above could then be advantageously used.
The mechanical device intended to adjust the size of the opening comprises, as shown in FIG. 3, a threaded rod 11 actuating the front wall 1, and adapted to the upper part of the U-shaped rails or irons 3. , who, on both sides? of the front wall 1, serve as guides for the latter.
The U-shaped irons are fixed to the plates 9 forming the side walls of the tank and of the trough. The threaded rod 11 comprises, in its upper part, a collar and, in its lower part, a guide tail.
The collar and the guide tail hold the. threaded rod 11, in the same axial direction, between the guard plates 15, which it passes through and which are suitably mounted on the U-shaped irons 4.
The threaded rod 11 comprises, at its upper end, a square section head which allows it to be pivoted using a key.
The threaded rod passes through a threaded mother head 10, suitably fixed, for example by welding, to the metal frame of the front wall 1. By rotation of the threaded rod II ,. the head 10 moving up or down, drives the front wall 1 and thus regulates the size of the opening.
The guide rail or U-shaped iron 4 has, at its front edge, a longitudinal slot 12 and a scale 14 which indicates the size of the opening, using a needle 13 fixed to the front wall 1 and protruding through the slot 12. The cover adjuster is designed so that none of its parts can protrude from the bottom of the guide rail.
Since the threaded rod 11 is actuated from the top, it is unnecessary to provide a free space on the side of the automatic feeder; Consequently, it is possible, as shown in FIG. 4, to place one against the other, without a break in continuity, several feeders consisting of easily transportable elements.
The front wall ¯1 can, for example, - consist of a 'plate of Eternit material or similar, the upper edge and side edges of which are encased in U-bars. The lower part of the Eternit plate, cut in one or more ares of a circle may be provided, up to the desired height, with a metallic coating, not shown in the drawings.
