<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

APPARATUS FOR THE SHEARING OF FOUNDRY MASSELOTTES.
In foundry, a distinction is commonly made - both in sand casting and in shell casting - between upward casting and downward casting, the former being characterized in particular by the fact that sinkings are considerably avoided. In steelworks, for example, the ingots are usually poured from the bottom into the shells. In this case, - several shells are on a tension plate and by casting channels provided in this plate, the casting is done at the same time for several ingots, by a casting funnel.
A disadvantage of the upward casting is the presence of the weights, which must be removed in some way to allow transport of the ingot. Because the runners $ for air exposed casting must have a relatively large diameter, the separation of the weights from the cast ingots is time consuming and expensive. Until now, it was common to remove the flyweights by autogenous cutting.
In modern steelworks, we have come to provide devices allowing shearing of the weights. In this case, in the pouring pits, piston systems, hydraulically operated for example, are provided which move the ingots on the tension plate and shave the weights.
These hydraulic systems work, it is true, in a satisfactory manner; however, in most cases it is not possible to incorporate them into the construction after the fact.
The present invention relates to a device which causes the separation by displacement of the ingots with their shell and, consequently, the shearing of the weights, without, for this, having to be incorporated in the construction of the pouring pit or of the tension plate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the invention, the fundamental element of the device is formed by a grapple, such as those of a similar shape which are generally known, for lifting and transporting loads and, in particular, ingots of 'steel. The characteristic resides, however, here in the fact that the forces acting during the pulling of the apparatus upwards, which, in the usual grapples, serve, due to a clamping effect, to grip the load and reliably prevent slipping, precisely thanks to this load, are used for the separation by displacement of the ingots According to this, the closing movement of the arms of the grapple is deformed into a spreading movement, each of the spacer elements gripping, at their lowest point, two or more pour-filled shells, placed opposite each other.
The shells are thus moved in opposite directions on the tension plate, when the crane is being pulled.
Shearing of the weights of two ingots moved vis-à-vis each other is ensured by the fact that after the necessary displacement zone, each shell meets a stop, so that the shell brought in first place against the stop which corresponds to it offers a fixed fulcrum and that the other shell is, necessarily, also moved. The displacement takes place during the passage of the cast material from the liquid state to the state of solid aggregate, while it is therefore still pasty.
The size of the casting shells and their arrangement on the tension plate determine the mode of execution of the apparatus. In particular, provision is made to have shear arms between the arms of the grapple, which move apart when the grapple is closed. In other cases, where there is insufficient space for the introduction of the apparatus, for example when - as is usual - four heavy shells are filled by casting, in a cross, from the middle and the space between these is very small, there are provided, between the arms of the grapple, profiled supports movable one inside the other, to each of which is mounted a thrust plate, said plates determining the telescopic movement of the supports.
Such devices which, placed between grapple arms closing under the effect of the load, determine a spacing, should be considered as coming within the scope of the invention.
The drawing shows two examples of implementation of the invention.
Figure 1 shows a side view of an apparatus with profiled supports disposed between the arms of the grapple and movable one within the other.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the apparatus shown in Figure 1.
FIG. 3 is a side view of an apparatus with a spacer device placed between the arms of the grapple.
FIG. 4 is a top view of a shearing device, with spacing, in the starting position.
FIG. 5 shows the shearing device, with spreading, in the spreading position.
In both embodiments, a grapple device forms the basic constituent part, in which, during traction, a closing force with reinforced action is obtained in the arms of the grapple thanks to a double action of levers. The conformation of the various members of the grapple device is of no interest to the invention. At the traction eyelet 1 are provided, in a known manner, connecting rods 2, the ends of which are articulated to gripper branches 3. To these branches are articulated the arms of the grapple itself 4, as shown in the drawing. , so that a vertical traction on the eyelet 1 causes a closing movement of said arms.
In the first embodiment, there are, between the load ends 5 of the arms of the grapple, profiled supports movable one inside the other, fixed to said arms. The beam 6, shaped for example as a U-shaped support, guides the beam 7 during tightening. On the free end
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the support 6 is fixed a rod 8 crossing perpendicularly the support and therefore projecting on either side of the latter. The end of the other beam, 7, carries a similar rod 9. 10 designates the four shells arranged on the tension plate 11. Between these, the device rests on the ground. During the traction, the arms 5 of the grapple close and, consequently, the rods 8 and 9 move away from each other.
They are applied against the shells, their weight increasing the pressing force, while preventing any lifting. Thus, the shells are moved on the smooth tension plate, until they come against the limit stops 12.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 3 to 5, there are provided, at the load ends of the arms 4 of the grapple, connecting pieces 14, mounted on horizontal pins 13. The aforementioned parts 14 receive, on their vertical pins 15 and 16, the shearing arms 17 and 18. The shearing arms 17 are connected at their other end by a pin 19, as the arms 18, which cross them, are connected by a pin 20. During the closing movement of the arms of the grapple, the shearing device moves away, that is to say that the ends of the arms articulated to the pins 19 and 20 are separated from each other.
The play of forces which is exerted is indicated by the arrows in figure 4, so that one obtains the position of the spacer device shown in figure 5. In this case, the thrust is exerted perpendicular to the plane. main of the grapple device. At the same time, the device is inserted between two shells and placed on the tension plate. Here again, the shells are moved on the plate until they reach the limit stops and thereby the weights are scissored.
CLAIMS.
