PRODUIT UTILISABLE EN HORTICULTURE ET EN.AGRICULTURE,'ET SA
PREPARATION.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
On peut faire varier entre des limites écartées la proportion de sphaigne, servant de matière d'absorption par rapport aux déchets de fer- mentation. Etant donné que la teneur en eau de ces déchets est supérieure à celle de la matière d'absorption, la teneur en eau du mélangeq lorsqu'on em- ploie des quantités relativement grandes de déchets, peut augmenter jusqu'à une valeur telle que des putréfactions nuisibles ne seraient pas exclues;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PRODUCT FOR USE IN HORTICULTURE AND AGRICULTURE, 'ET SA
PREPARATION.
When making penicillin and other antibiotics such as streptomycin or tyrothricin by fermenting an appropriate substance with certain microorganisms, especially fungi, the raw material from which the drug is obtained antibiotic is usually the clear medium that results from fermentation. During this, various solid constituents appear in the medium, for example the mycelium of the applied fungus and insoluble substances which have arisen during fermentation. Other solid constituents may form in the fermentation medium as a result of changes in the pH of the substratum or the addition of clarifying agents or else cooling of the medium or other operations which are, optionally, carried out during, before or after fermentation.
These solid constituents are separated from the fermentation liquid by working in various ways, for example by decantation, centrifugation or filtration. In the case of filtration, which is the means usually employed, a cake is obtained which, if necessary. it is about the manufacture of penicillin, generally contains., after washing, 20 to 30% of dry substance. This product and similar products will hereinafter be referred to as fermentation waste,
Although these wastes contain organic nutrients as well as minerals, eg nitrogen? phosphorus, potassium and calcium and large amounts of vitamin B1 and micro-foods, it has so far only been possible to use them to a very limited extent.
These wastes were found to be unsuitable as complementary feed for cattle, whereas this application was envisaged to take advantage of their vitamin B1 content. In addition, it has been proposed to dry them but the costs involved are too high to be justified by the possibilities of using the seco product. Dried waste could,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
for example, be used for the control of rickets in cattle, taking advantage, in this case, of their phosphorus content, but for this purpose purer and less expensive phosphates are available.
The wastes considered exert a powerful fermentation action on the cellulose and, consequently, attempts have been made to combine them with various organic materials to make composts, for example with old stable manure which has been washed or with manure. fresh containing straw in various proportions or even straw or chaff of cereals which have been subjected to the action of bad weather. A great drawback of such applications is that they are strictly limited to certain seasons of the year and, moreover, that they only lend themselves to implementation in a very restricted region, since the waste from fermentation are unsuitable for long-distance transport.
In this respect, therefore, it was not possible to find a market for an essential part of the large quantities of waste produced incessantly, at all times of the year, in each of the penicillin factories.
In the fresh state, the fermentation waste has the consistency of a soft grain slurry, the keeping qualities of which are very poor. At atmospheric temperatures in excess of 10 to 15, it immediately purifies it, while at lower temperatures it can be stored relatively cool for up to 5 days.
During putrefaction, they liquefy and give rise to the separation of a certain quantity of water, while giving off an unpleasant odor; because of this, they must be evacuated from the factory area without much delay.
For these reasons, it is important to find an outlet for this product which would allow the total production to be sold in all seasons of the year.
This is precisely what is offered by the present invention. Its object is a plant fertilizer or agent for making compost, fertilizing or producing heat for horticulture or agriculture, which is the product fermenting, to sufficient stability, a mixture of fermentation wastes from the manufacture of antibiotics with sphagnum moss or peat moss.
In such mixtures, the foul-smelling putrefaction is replaced by slow bacterial and enzymatic decomposition, in which both cellulose and nitrogen are involved. This decomposition process takes place with a slow release of heat and a substantial retention of the ammonia generated. Consequently, the mixture is kept for a long time and one can take advantage, at any time, of its content of nitrogenous and mineral foods for the cultivation of plants.
The process can be regarded as complete when the decomposition has reached the stage at which, under normal conditions of storage, no more odorous putrefaction occurs or, in other words, when the waste of fermentation originally found in the product have been transformed almost completely into humus. When matter is in this state, bacterial and enzymatic decomposition has almost ceased or has become very slow. However, when cellulosic material is added again and the product is placed under suitable conditions, heat development is resumed or increased to an appreciable level and the cellulosic material or vegetable waste thus added may. , therefore, have to generate humus very quickly.
The proportion of sphagnum moss serving as absorption material relative to the fermentation waste can be varied within wide limits. Since the water content of these wastes is higher than that of the absorption material, the water content of the mixture when relatively large quantities of wastes are used may increase to such an extent that harmful putrefactions would not be excluded;
therefore, when it is desired to use such large quantities of fermentation waste, it is recommended, at a first stage, to first add a small proportion and then to add new quantities when mixing was left to stand under conditions suitable for closing
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
ter and dry This operation can be repeated several times., The proportion of fermentation waste mixed in the first place can go, for example, up to six times the quantity of sphagnum moss. If this operation is repeated, nothing prevents the absorption of;, for example, a proportion of fermentation waste equal to 13 times, or more, that of sphagnum moss.
The absorbent material used according to the present invention, that is to say sphagnum or peat moss, is rich in cellulose and poor in nitrogen so that it of itself offers little value as a plant growing aid. ; it is, on the other hand, a suitable substratum for the slow decomposition of cellulose under the influence of fermentation waste and a good fixer for the ammonia generated at the same time in the decomposition of nitrogenous materials ;, as well as' a protective agent against the tendency to putrefaction exhibited by fermentation wastes.
In order to bring about the desired transformation into a material capable of being stored, it suffices, after intimate mixing of the sphagnum moss and the fermentation waste, to leave the whole µ protected from the rain or to remove it from other influences liable to cause:, by washing, the departure of soluble constituents, as well as the action of excess heat or cold. Thus, the mixture can be left in a pile under a roof or in a shed or house with reasonable access to air but with protection from the wind, which could disperse the piles.
During storage, \! the biological process must be able to take place by causing, inside the heaps, a rise in temperature activating the decomposition into humuso The desired transformation can be accomplished for a wide range of temperatures but in the normal way, it takes place more slowly when the temperature is lower than when it is higher.
Already :, in very small piles containing 50 to 100 kg of the mixture and having a height of 60 cm, the internal temperature rises to 45 and then slowly decreases :, in 6 to 10 weeks :, up to the temperature of the surrounding environment which can be at an average of 4 for example. The piles can be much bigger and the layer thickness can be as much less as a little over 60 cm although, if the height is too large ;, the matter is, inside the lower part, compressed to the point of preventing sufficient access of air., and the desired transformation becomes so slow that an inopportune putrefaction comes the rem - to place.
To remain in control of the process, it is best to measure the temperature inside the mixture at appropriate time intervals and ensure that the mixture does not emit any liquid or odor at one degree. important and also that the temperature increase occurs between limits compatible with a good formation of humus so that at the beginning it does not rise, for example, to less than 20 and to more than 60, to de- grows thereafter.
In addition, the mixture must not be allowed to settle at the bottom in lumps which cannot be penetrated by the air. If the temperature does not rise a greater layer thickness or better protection against the wind or against the cold prevail; if it raises too much or if liquid escapes from the heaps, it is because they are too big or because their height has exceeded the admissible value under the air intake conditions that arise and it is necessary then spread the piles and make them again smaller or lower. Thus, it is always possible to promote the desired transformation and, in most cases, this is completed in 5 to 6 weeks, although under certain conditions a longer time may be necessary.
The mixtures forming the subject of the present invention can be applied as heating agents (for example for the assembly of layers or the preparation of "stoves"); in this case, mixtures containing a relatively small proportion of fermentation wastes are often most suitable; these are, for example, mixtures in which the proportion of absorbent material ;, counted as containing 75% of dry substances, relative to the fermentation wastes, counted as containing 24% of dry substances, is 1 : 1 to 1:
4. If, however, these mixtures are to be added to other plant material containing cellulose or to fu-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
mier strongly straw it is recommended to use more fermentation waste and in this case the proportion can be, for example, from 1 g 5 to 1: 13. If the mixture is to be added to nutrients or fertilizers- for plants, various compositions and pHs can be obtained by varying the rate of mixing. After a certain storage time, the pH is then, in general, all the higher the higher the proportion of fermentation waste in the mixture.
In the case of a particular sphagnum moss, the following pHs were recorded, after 6 weeks of storage, in mixtures of various compositions, the proportions being counted as specified above.

By storing under other conditions, the manufac- turer is able to produce a higher or lower pH, in mixtures rich in fermentation wastes, by slowing down or by activating the decomposition of the substances. nitrogenous and, therefore, it is able to produce various combinations of nutrients and pH values.
Likewise, by leaving the mixture to stand with a view to its drying or by carrying out an artificial drying of the mixture or of its constituents, for example by carrying out alternately drying and addition of new quantities of fermentation waste, as has been said above , the moisture content can be regulated independently of the dry matter content of the fermentation waste. In many cases, it is recommended, if necessary, to adjust the content of dry substances so as to raise it up to 50 to 70%.
In order to illustrate the moisture and nutrient content, the results of analyzes relating to seven different mixtures of the same sphagnum moss and the same kind of fermentation waste from from a penicillin factory

The two samples designated 7-15.1 are drawn simultaneously from the same lot and thus, they illustrate the inaccuracy of sampling and analysis.
The fact that the nitrogen content is higher than the nitrogen contents calculated above, despite the water contents being the same as those taken into account in the calculationa is probably attributable to a decrease the dry substance content, this drop apparently not being accompanied by a corresponding drop in the nitrogen content,
The following analysis of mixtures with soil shows that a given soil can be given various levels of food easily assimilated by plants, by adding various amounts of food and fertilizers prepared in accordance with the invention. .

By using one part of fertilizer prepared in accordance with the invention for 7 parts of earth, the following results were obtained,
in experiments continued for 2 months
In the case of newly planted roses and carnations, the roots were strong and the plants, vigorous and healthier, exhibited more shoots and had better foliage than plants grown in soil without the fertilizer considered. The effect obtained differs from that of a nitrate fertilizer, in that the foliage is the normal dark green color and growth is never weak.
In the case of transplanted and rooted plants, for example cucumbers, melons and celery, and in the case of annual summer flowers, growth was greatly increased, the plants were more vigorous and more healthy and larger roots.
In the case of leeks and other vegetables obtained from seeds sown on the spot, a particularly vigorous and healthy growth can be obtained by means of a light surface treatment with the fertilizer which is the subject of the invention.
When growing cucumbers in a greenhouse, the spreading of the roots is particularly remarkable when the fertilizer which is the object of the invention is used as a surface fertilizer.
In the cultivation of cucumbers, the application of this fertilizer does not appear to promote the formation of acrid substances, as it does when using other soil improvers or other substances. heat generators, especially horse manure, at such a proportionately high rate. On the contrary, in the experimental cultivation of cucumbers with the help of the product object of the invention, it was possible to completely avoid the formation of acrid cucumbers, which otherwise, in many cases, is the cause of significant losses.
