<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

SMALL POWER ELECTRIC MACHINE.
The invention relates to a low-power electric machine, the magnetic circuit of which comprises two parts, driven by relative rotation, one of which is constituted by a permanent magnet with several poles.
By "small power electric machine" is meant electric motors or dynamos with a power of up to approximately 30 W. The use in such machines of a permanent magnet with a large number of poles offers the following advantage for a determined number of turns, they provide an electric voltage of fairly high frequency. In the light dynamos for bicycles of the so-called hub type, this large number of poles makes it possible to obtain constant light at slow rotational speeds.
The electric machine according to the invention is characterized by the fact that between said two parts are arranged means (spacing means) which adjust the desired size of the air gap and which at the same time ensure the rotation. relative of said parts by a rolling friction. One of the essential advantages inherent in such a form of construction is that when external forces are exerted on one of the parts, for example as a result of a small and fairly common deformation of the parts of the casing to which the circuit is coupled, the spacing means ensure that in no place the air gap exceeds the required size.
This advantage is particularly important for the operation of small power electric machines, since in general these permanent magnet machines are constructed in such a way that, in order to obtain as much power as possible in a minimum space requirement, (this which implies, among other things, the use of as small a volume as possible of magnetic steel) the air gap must be very small, for example of the order of a few tenths of a millimeter, so that the variation of the air gap due to the causes mentioned may cause friction of the rotating parts and damage the machine.
In addition, in these small machines, to reduce the weight an
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
at least the dimensions and the materials of the caracasse are chosen, so that the said deformations could have a harmful effect; special arrangements must therefore be made. For high-power machines, this is not the case, since in them nothing prevents the assembly from being made sufficiently rigid and sufficiently robust so that said deformations have no effect. The construction according to the invention offers a further advantage; the spacer means allow rolling friction between the rotating parts, which can be achieved, for example, by means of ball or roller bearings.
These separation means have in fact the property of absorbing the forces produced by the said deformations between determined limits without the frictional resistance between the moving parts becoming so great that it hinders the relative movement of these parts. . However, according to another feature of the invention, it is possible to ensure that the magnitude of said forces is reduced to a minimum.
According to the invention, the electrical machines of the type mentioned, the parts of which are concentric, comprise, in addition to the spacing means mentioned, elastic means for example under the effect of which at least one or more parts is mounted, with a certain degree of freedom, in relation to the other. These means ensure that the forces exerted on the circuit during said deformations are totally absorbed by the deformed part of the machine such as, for example, when using a Cardan coupling, or for a small part, by the means in question, for example in the case of use of an elastic coupling.
In both cases, owing to the degree of freedom of the part in question of the circuit, the forces caused by the deformation are, either not at all, or else for a slight part only, transmitted to the spacing means of the two parts of the circuit. circuit.
The use of a fairly limited degree of freedom is particularly advantageous in dynamos for bicycles of the so-called hub type, since the deformations in question generally occur in the hub under the effect of external forces exerted on the hub. the wheel, for example because, as a result of irregularities in the road surface, the wheel is subjected to impacts or because, as a result of the inclination of the bicycle in a support, a torque is exerted on this wheel this which can cause permanent deformation in the hub. In addition, such torque often occurs when one gets on the bicycle. The harmful influence of deformations of the hub under the effect of the last mentioned causes can be very troublesome, because the torque lever arm is large enough, namely of the order of magnitude of the radius of the wheel.
However, by itself, the deformation is such that its harmful influence can be reduced by a fairly limited degree of freedom of movement. This limited degree of freedom is therefore sufficient so that, in these cases, the deformation of the hub does not cause a greater force on the spacing means than that which would be exerted there in the absence of the mentioned degree of freedom. The same advantage is obviously obtained when, as a result of play in the windings, the wheel plays with respect to its axis and veers during its rotation. In general, this will not cause deformation of the hub.
All the advantages mentioned can be obtained in an electric machine, in particular a dynamo in the hub for a bicycle, in which the two parts of the magnetic circuit are juxtaposed, in the axial direction. However, in determining the degree of freedom of movement required, another fact must be taken into account.
In this type of machine, under normal operating conditions, the magnetic force of attraction between the two parts of the magnetic circuit is large enough to apply them against the spacer means, which automatically ensures the desired magnitude. However, under other than normal operating conditions, the air gap may become larger, although the force of magnetic attraction tends to oppose such enlargement. In order to keep the size of the air gap constant it is then essential that at least one of the parts has a certain degree of freedom of movement as mentioned above.
According to the invention, provision has been made for this purpose, in addition to the spacing means, means, preferably elas-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
ticks, thanks to which at least one of the parts is mounted with a limited and predetermined degree of freedom of movement, with respect to the conjugate part, which, under operating conditions other than normal conditions, prevents the force d Magnetic attraction to increase the size of the air gap.
In another embodiment of the invention, in the type of machine in which the two parts of the magnetic circuit are juxtaposed in the axial direction, there are provided, in addition to the spacing means, elastic means by which at least one of the parts is mounted with a predetermined limited degree of freedom, with respect to the mating part of the machine, the elastic means being chosen so that, under operating conditions deviating from normal conditions, they collaborate with the magnetic attraction force to prevent an increase in air gap It is recommendable to use such an embodiment when the magnetic attraction force is not large enough to prevent an increase in air gap
Since, in the case of dynamos of the type in the hub,
the probability of deformation of the hub is very high, in a hub dynamo according to the invention, in which one of the parts of a magnetic circuit is constituted by a permanent magnet rotating with the hub, this magnet is supported in the said hub by means capable of providing a low degree of freedom. In a very simple and particularly effective embodiment, the elastic means used consist only of one or more rubber rings, arranged between a cylindrical inner surface of the hub, and a cylindrical surface of one of the parts.
In order to obtain a compact construction in the radial direction of the machine type in which the two parts of the magnetic circuit are juxtaposed in the axial direction, preferably an annular permanent magnet is used and the bearing surfaces for the rolling parts of the spacer means. have a diameter smaller than the inside diameter of the ring and are part of organs which are connected to the permanent magnet or to the other part of the magnetic circuit.
From a manufacturing point of view, it has been found to be advantageous to constitute the member and the magnet to which it is connected in a single piece. If the range of the spacing means must be in the same plane as the surfaces of the magnetic poles facing the air gap, this result can be obtained by grinding.
The description which will follow with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing being, of course, part of said invention.
Fig. 1 shows in section a hub dynamo, in which the two parts of the magnetic circuit are juxtaposed in the axial direction and in which a non-rotating part of the generator circuit is mounted on elastic supports.
Fig. 2 shows in section a dynamo in the hub of which the magnetic circuit parts are mounted in the same way, but in which a rotating part is resiliently supported.
Fig. 3 shows, in section, a dynamo in the hub, in which the two parts of the magnetic circuit are concentric while a rotating part is elastically supported.
In the various figures, the corresponding parts bear the same reference numerals; the hub 2 is supported by two rows of balls 3 and by two adjustable cones 4 on the axis 1. The figures show only a single ball bearing and a single cone; the second is located, in the usual way, on the other side of the axis 1. The hub 2 comprises a part 19, provided with a flange 20 on which the part 5 of the large-diameter hub is fixed. - meter, and in which are housed the various components of the dynamo. The part
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
5 and part 19 of the hub respectively comprise flanges 6 and 7 for fixing the spokes of the wheel, not shown in the drawing.
In fig. 1, the two parts of the magnetic circuit consist of a multipolar permanent magnet 10 and of a pack of sheets 21, between which the air gap 18 is formed, the permanent magnet 10 consists of an annular plate 22 and pole pieces 23 which extend in the axial direction and are at regular distances from each other in the tangential direction. The plate 22 and the pole pieces 23 are made of a single piece of magnetic steel. The permanent magnet 10 is fixed to the hub 2 by means of a plate 8. The pack of sheets 21, consisting of stacked sheets, is mounted on a plate 11 which an annular body 12 of rubber holds on. axis 1.
The rubber body 12 is clamped on the axis 1 between the cone 4 and a nut 13, which gives the sheet pack 21 a predetermined freedom of movement with respect to the axis 1. Each sheet affects es- essentially the shape of an unclosed ring whose ends 21a must be located, as a result of the insulating material interposed in the tangential direction, at a certain distance from each other and facing the pole pieces 23 of the permanent magnet. In the toroidal openings of the sheet bundle there is a coil 14 in which the generator voltage is generated.
Between the magnet 10 and the pack of sheets 21, there are spacing means in the form of a ball bearing comprising two rolling rings 15 and 17, one of which (15) is fixed to the pack of sheets and the other (17) to the permanent magnet. The ball bearing 16 adjusts the size of the air gap 18, i.e. this bearing prevents the magnetic force of attraction between the magnet and the sheet pack from reducing the air gap to a smaller size than required. Furthermore, the ball bearing allows the magnet 10 to rotate relative to the sheet metal pack 21 by rolling friction.
It goes without saying that the ball bearing 16 can be replaced by a roller bearing:
If, during the operation of the dynamo in the hub, the hub 2 undergoes a deformation, or else when the position of the hub 2 is modified with respect to the axis 1 (modification which obviously does not include the relative rotation of the axis 1 and hub 2), a displacement of the permanent magnet 10, a displacement which tends to increase the size of the air gap 18, under the effect of the magnetic attraction force, will be followed by the packet of sheets 21, which is able to perform this movement thanks to the limited freedom of movement provided by the elasticity of the rubber part 12.
The limited freedom of movement of the sheet package 21 therefore allows, under conditions deviating from normal operating conditions, that the magnetic force of attraction between the two parts does not cause an increase in the size of the air gap,
During the said variation in the position of the magnet 10, a variation which will tend to reduce the size of the air gap 18, the magnet 10 will exert, by means of spacing means 17, 16, 15 a pressure on the sheet metal pack 21, which allows the sheet metal pack, thanks to the rubber part 12, to be adjusted relative to the magnet without modifying the size of the air gap. Any combination of the mentioned movements of the permanent magnet 10 will therefore not affect the length of the air gap 18.
In general, the magnetic attraction will be sufficient to avoid an increase in the size of the air gap 18 in the case of air gaps of a few tenths of a millimeter. Optionally, the attractive force can be enhanced or reduced by imparting pre-tension to the rubber ring 12 in a desired direction.
Not only does the length of the air gap remain unchanged during the mentioned deformation, but in addition, the forces which occur during the deformation are mainly absorbed by the hub and only a small fraction by the rubber part, as this rubber part allows a deformation of part 5 of the hub. As a result, the balls 16 are significantly less stressed than if the plate 11 were rigidly fixed to the axle 1.

In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the permanent magnet 24 is supported in the hub 2 by a rubber ring 25 which is between the cylindrical inner surface 5a of the part 5 of the hub and the cylindrical outer surface 26a of the pole pieces 26. The magnet 24 can also be supported in the hub by means of an elastic ring 27, drawn in dotted lines, which is located between the cylindrical inner surface 2a of the hub 2 and the cylindrical inner surface 28a of an annular member 28 of magnetic steel, member which is made in one piece with the magnetic body 24. This member 28 and the annular member 29 fixed on the pack of sheets 30, together form the rolling rings of the ball bearing.
The packet of sheets 30 is fixed on the axis 1 by means of a plate 31 which is clamped between the cone 4 and a nut 32. When the position of the hub 2 varies with respect to the axis 1, or a deformation of the hub, the magnetic attraction between the magnet and the sheet packet will prevent the magnet 24 from participating in this movement thanks to the elastic means 25 or 27, while the rotation of the hub 2 with respect to axis 1 is followed by magnet 24. Also, in this case, elastic means (25 and / or 27) are chosen so that they allow the magnetic force to increase in strength. size of the air gap.
However, the magnetic attraction can optionally be reinforced by an elastic ring 33 drawn in dotted lines. In this case, the elastic means (25 and / or 27 and 33) are chosen so that together with the magnetic attraction they practically prevent an increase in the size of the gap. may possibly only use the ring 33.
The rubber rings 25, 27 and / or 33 can optionally be replaced by leaf springs or by coil springs. It is also possible to fix the magnet 24 to the hub 2 using a cylindrical box with an elastic bottom. The raised edge of the box can, for this purpose, be fixed around the magnet while the The bottom of the box can be fixed to the hub 2 in such a way that the raised edge and the magnet 24 have a certain freedom of movement with respect to the hub.
Just like the embodiment shown in fig 1, that shown in fig. 2 offers the advantage that, during a deformation or a displacement of the hub, the balls of the spacer means are, in general, stressed in a more advantageous manner than in the case of a rigid connection between the hub. magnet and hub.
As shown in figs. 1 and 2, the seating surfaces for the balls of the bearing, have a diameter smaller than the inner diameter of the pole pieces 23 or 26, which ensures a compact construction in the radial direction,
In the embodiment shown in fig. 3, the permanent magnet 34 is constituted by a cylinder 34a and by pole pieces 35 which extend in the radial direction and which are, in the tangential direction, at regular distances. The packets of sheets 36 are arranged on a bush 37 of magnetic material, also forming protrusions in the radial direction at regular distances, which bush is integral with a plate 38 which the cone 4 and a nut 39 fix on the plate. axis 1. Around each package of sheets is a coil 40.
The spacing means consist of roller bearings 41, one of the rolling rings (42) of which is fixed to the magnet 34 and the other (43) to the pack of sheets 36. Thanks to this arrangement, even in the case of deformations, the size of the air gap in no place becomes less than the imposed value. The magnet 34 is supported in the hub by means of an elastic ring 44, which gives the magnet a certain freedom of movement relative to the hub.
Also in this embodiment, the rollers of the spacer means are urged in a significantly more advantageous manner than in the case of a rigid assembly between the magnet and the hub.
It goes without saying that, in the embodiments shown schematically, it is possible to reverse the location of the permanent magnet and of the sheet bundles. In this case, the packs of sheets must be fitted with

gues collectors. You can also arrange the whole so that the two parts turn in opposite directions.
