ELECTRICAL CABLE AND METHOD FOR ITS MANUFACTURING.
This invention relates to electric cables and aims to provide an improved battleship electric cable.
The electric cable according to the present invention is provided with a sheath or armor of stainless steel, preferably stabilized stainless steel, the joint or joints of this armor being welded by fusion by means of one or more electric arcs. argon protected. Stabilized stainless steel is a stainless steel that includes elements such as columbium or titanium to prevent precipitation of carbide during melting during welding.
The joint or joint may be of the butt welded type, but preferably the joint of a cable sheath is formed between two radially protruding flanges provided on the edge of the stainless steel strip bent around the sleeve. soul or souls of the cable.
To weld two of these flanges, the fusion arc is made to shoot out between the electrode of the welding head and the free edges of the flanges and the flanges are pressed into contact with each other, and the metal of the flanges melts with a well-formed and rounded bead, which is a considerable improvement over the type of weld produced when using the resistance welding process. In the latter welding process, the edges, the shape of which is practically not changed,, remain projecting radially on the sheath and leave between them a hollow suitable for retaining atmospheric humidity, which does not occur in the weld. of a cable according to the invention.
By employing an argon-protected, circulating water-cooled arc welding electrode holder, very high welding speeds can be achieved if good thermal contact is maintained.

be the edges or edges of the metal to be welded. Even if the ledges or edges are not pressed into contact with each other, the width of the gap between them should certainly not exceed 0.002 inch (0.05mm), otherwise the metal of the edges or edges do not tend to flow properly inward and poor solder and even holes are obtained, thus defective protection of the cable cores.
Welding speeds of 10 feet (3m) per minute and more can be achieved, and by employing these high speeds, current is saved and the cable cores are less heated.
An embodiment of a telephone cable according to the present invention will be described below, given as an example, with reference to the two figures of the appended drawing, in which FIG. 1 shows, somewhat schematically, the joint of the cable sheath during the welding operation and FIG. 2 shows, on a larger scale, in cross section, the welded joint of the cable sheath, as produced.
In this drawing, the armored cable 1 consists of a single core 2, comprising a series of paper-insulated conductors 3, surrounded by several layers of paper 4, in a known manner, and a sheath or armor. stabilized stainless steel 5. The cable is made by bending a steel strip around the core 2 and welding the joint by means of a mechanical electrode holder 6 of the cooled argon arc type. by circulating water, the joint being welded in the direction of the arrow under the fixed electrode 7 of the welding station o The circular core 2, with a diameter of 1/2 inch (12.5 mm ) approximately, is enclosed in a steel sheath 5 made of 21 gauge strip, which is bent around the web by "shaping rollers (not shown)
so as to form two parallel flanges 8 and 9 protruding radially, each approximately 3/32 inch (2.5 mm) high. These edges 8 and 9 lie side by side and when they pass through the device to be shaped and welded, they are cleaned, for example by scraping brushing, by means of steel wire brushes (not re- shown), so that at least the edges of the flanges 8 and 9 and their faces facing each other (not visible) are free of dirt, oxides and dust.
When located below the welding electrode holder 6, the flanges 8 and 9 can be pressed against each other by. suitable rollers 10 (only one of which is visible), or they can simply be held together but it is important to ensure that there is hardly any gap between the faces placed against each other. other. The electrical current supplied to the electrode holder 6 is direct current, with the sheath 5 being positive and the welding electrode 7 negative and the joint welds without the electrode holder 6 at a speed of about 9 feet (2.70 m) per minute.
No flux is used and at this speed for an arc of about 0.04 to 0.06 inch (1.0 to 1.5 mm) a solder current of about 120 amperes is used. to prevent the welding heat from damaging the core 2 of the cable, cooling can be provided by a water jet 11 and this should be placed as close as possible to the welding electrode holder. 6 so as to achieve rapid cooling but avoiding any disturbance of the welding arc 12.
As shown in Figo 2, this metal from the flanges 8 and 9 without the weld arc 12 melts into a clearly rounded bead or bead 13 and the weld has a much better shape than that produced by resistance welding where there is no has no flow of metal.
The welding speed and current are chosen in such a way that when the joint is to be welded horizontally, the thickness of the weld bead is approximately equal to the thickness of the steel strip. This is essential to prevent the formation of steel nodules at points spaced along the length of the joint, although a greater depth of penetration can be achieved by tilting the joint so that gravity.

helps prevent: the formation of nodules.
The cable may naturally have more than a single core and its sheath or armor may have more than one seal.
