<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Le dispositif distributeur des biscuits qui amène ces derniers sous leur propre poids au-dessus de la plate-forme fil est supporté au-dessus du socle 1 sur une embase 59 fixée à ce socle 1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
représentées en trait interrompu dans la fig. 7.
PROCESS AND-APPARATUS-FOR THE MECHANICAL PRODUCTION OF FILLED WAFERS
WITH ICE CREAM.
This invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the mechanical production of wafers filled with ice cream, ie wafers comprising a layer of ice cream sandwiched between two cookies. The term "ice cream" as used in this text is to be interpreted in a general sense as including any other edible solid substance having a consistency similar to ice cream useful in baking or confectionery and therefore capable of to be cut with a knife.
The main object of the invention is to allow the mechanical production of wafers filled with ice cream under conditions such as apart from recharging the apparatus with cookies and ice cream; only has to monitor the operation of this device or control its mechanical actuation.
The present process for the mechanical manufacture of ice cream wafers by the application of an apparatus using a cookie dispensing device and an ice cream severing and applying device, both of these devices having synchronous operations. - chronized, consists essentially of placing each cookie on a platform using the dispensing device provided for this purpose in passing the mobile knife belonging to this cutting device through the end part of a block of ice cream to separate this end part and, thanks to the action of the applicator device,
in transporting the end part of this block of ice cream to bring it closer to the cookie and to bring it to the top of the latter in order to deposit the ice cream on it., then by the action of the dispensing device to apply another cookie on the layer of ice cream thus laid, the block of ice cream being forced to advance step by step in order to undergo the successive sections giving rise to the portions applicable against the cookies for the purpose of

making wafers.
The invention also encompasses an apparatus for carrying out this method, the construction of this apparatus being as described below with reference to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example, a possible embodiment of this apparatus.

Fig. 12 is a vertical sectional view through the line XII-XII of FIG. 1.
Fig 13 is a vertical sectional view through line XIII-XIII of Fig 1.
As shown in figs. 1 and 8, the apparatus comprises a base 1 supporting its mechanically controlled members as well as the transmission ensuring the drive thereof. This base 1 rests on a lower frame 2 which itself rests on a flange provided at the lower part of the vertical wall of a cold room of which only the upper part is shown (Fig. 8). The lower frame 2 is provided with a circular internal periphery 6 with steps which supports a peripheral flange 7 integral with a support plate 8. This plate is thus suspended under conditions enabling a series to be printed on it by hand. angular displacements.
The carrier plate 8 serves to suspend a series of tubular supports 9 (Fig. 5) which receive the blocks of ice cream at the rate of one block per support. Each of the supports takes the form of an elongated box having in cross section a rectangular shape and one of the walls of which is cut with a vertical slot 10 for the purpose indicated below and is provided at its lower part with internal flanges 11 supporting the block of ice cream which is introduced into the support from its upper part. The support 9 is provided with upper outer edges 12 and 13.
With a view to receiving the supports 9, the carrier plate 8 is provided with a series of circumferentially spaced holes 14 (Fig. 2). Of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
either side of each orifice 11. the plate 8 is provided with recesses 12 receiving the edges 12 of the support in order to hold the latter. The parts 16 of the curved wall of the orifice M leave between them and the adjacent walls of the support 2 a certain free space and can be chamfered as shown. It is through this free space that the operator can insert his fingers and pass them under the edges 13 of the support 9, so as to facilitate the lifting of the latter and to release it in this way from the support plate 8. To allow this release of an empty support and its replacement by a loaded support, an orifice 17 is provided in the base 1.
This orifice 17 is also provided with chamfered parts 18 affecting its curved wall, so as to provide spaces of sufficient size to allow the introduction of the fingers as indicated above. This is how the supports 9 can be lifted and put in place through the holes in the base.
To allow the carrier plate 8 to rotate so as to bring each tubular support 2 in turn to a working position in which the block of ice cream held by this support can be worked for the production of a wafer filled as described below, there is provided a stud 19 (Figa 3) mounted loosely and which can be engaged in any one of a series of holes 20 made in the plate 9,
this

stud which can pass through a curved slot 21 of the base 1. When the stud l- reaches the end of the slot? ..., the support plate 8 occupies a position for which a loaded support .9 coincides with a chimney 22 to allow the block of ice cream held in this support to be lifted through this chimney, a support ¯9 being brought thanks to the movement of the carrier plate 8 to a position coinciding with the orifice 17 of the base 1 to allow the support to be released and replacing a loaded medium.
The various driven members which are supported by the base 1 and which can be disengaged as a whole are actuated by a control mounted in
EMI3.3
a die-forged part 23. fixed on the base 1. As shown in figea 13, this control comprises a shaft 24 on which are fixed a crank .a2 and a pinion 26 which, via a pinion 27 with straight teeth Idle mounted and another pinion 28, drive a countershaft 29 which itself actuates a main shaft 30 via a gear 31. The gear ratios of the gear in question are calculated. so as to ensure the required reduction.
For the successive production of wafers filled with ice cream, it is necessary to print upward movements step by step to a block of ice cream 32 contained in the support 2 which at this time occupies the working position, so that no part of this block, which projects above the chimney 22, can be cut by a knife 33 with horizontal movement (Figa 8). In view of this upward progression of the block 32 of ice cream, there is provided a supply rod 34 provided with a rack
EMI3.4
J2 (Fig. 9) which is driven by any one of a series of z6 toothed elements mounted on a sleeve 37 (pin 13) keyed to the main shaft ± Q, so as to rotate with it.
These toothed elements 36 are provided with different numbers of teeth for the engagement of the rack 35. As a result, the feed rod 34 is raised to different degrees by
EMI3.5
the various elements 12 for a single revolution of the main shaft 30. A spring loaded pawl 12 (Fig. 9) maintains the feed rod 34 in the raised position to which it has been brought. This ratchet 39 can be released to allow this rod 34 to be lowered. The feed rod
EMI3.6
, 34 moves in guide slides 40 of the die-forged part 23 and has a groove 41 in which a key is engaged for each of the slides, in order to prevent the rod 34 from rotating on itself.
At the lower part of the feed rod 34 is removably mounted a foot 42 pierced with a hole into which the rod 34 penetrates and closed at its lower part by a sole 43. This hole contains an engaged key.

34 and can mount in the vertical slot 10 (pin 5) of the tubular support 2 of the ice cream block o The part of the foot! 2 which enters this support 5Z. is angled up and has a head! [1 that supports and lifts the block 32 of ice cream. The lowering amplitude of the feed rod .2 ± t is calculated so as to bring the foot 42 clearly away from the lower part of the support 9 of the block of ice cream in order to allow the support plate 8 to rotate as described below, in order to bring in a support that is not

trimmed .2 in the working position.
When the feed rod 1 receives its first upward movement, the head ¯41 of the foot rises and passes between the edges 11 of the supports 2 (Figo 5), thus lifting the block of ice cream which was resting up to there on these ledges.
EMI4.3
To allow movement of the manobon, 7 carrying the toothed elements 36, there is provided a small fork forming a stopper engaged in one of the grooves or in each of the grooves separating these elements 36.
This fork 48 is provided with an operating button /; he which projects through a slot 50 of a plate forming the cover of the die-forged part

23. The lower edge of this slot 2Q is shaped so as to constitute notches .21 which maintain this fork in the chosen position FigP 8)
The knife II which serves to section the part of the block of ice cream which emerges above the chimney 22 after each lifting is supported by a sleeve 52 with a square straight section which can slide along a horizontal bar 53 with a square section adequately supported by the

base 1. The knife It can be easily released from the sleeve .52.
Its movement plane is designed so that it passes just away from the upper part of the chimney 22. However, the front wall of this chimney can extend upwards and can be grooved to constitute a guide.
EMI4.6
of the knife II as shown in fig 90 The knife holder sleeve 52 moves back and forth along the bar 21 under the action of a device comprising a handle !. driven by means of an angle gear 5. (Fâ.gol3) from the main shaft 30. This crank 54 is coupled to the sleeve
EMI4.7
52 by means of a J6 link.
The stroke thus imparted to the sleeve 52 is calculated in such a way that the knife begins to move forward (that is to say from right to left when looking at the pin 8) clearly out of the way. of the chimney 22, then crosses the latter and the platform 57 for the production of the wafers side by side with this chimney, and then moves away from this platform! it to completely cross a stop stop 58 provided for the purpose indicated below,
The biscuit dispenser device which brings the latter under their own weight above the wire platform is supported above the base 1 on a base 59 fixed to this base 1;
it can be easily disengaged as a whole and consequently comprises (see fig. 8) a support plate 60 engaged in a recess of the base .52. Rotary fixing knobs
EMI4.8
61 are provided to maintain this plate àQ in the base fi9. The positioning of the support plate 60 to prevent it from moving sideways is ensured by studs 62 provided on this plate and passing through
EMI4.9
holes 63 of the base 1a. The support plate 6Q carries, attached to it, a housing 61 which encloses a sliding work plate 65. resting on a fixed lower plate 66. The plates .65. and 66 are supported by a wire retaining frame fixed in the perforated bottom of the housing 64.
An orifice made in the upper part of the latter receives the lower part of a box 68 at its upper part and open at its lower part. This box 68 is suitably fixed in the housing 64. Wire partitions divide the
EMI4.10
box 68 in several compartments ZO¯ and 1l for receiving cookies and in a central space 72 which remains free. Access to the compartments 70 and 71 allowing them to be filled with stacks of cookies is made possible by removing the removable side flanges 73 which form the sides of this box 68.
To keep these flanges 73 in the closed position, the cheeks
EMI4.11
side 7 provided on them are provided with inclined notches 75, engaging fixed studs 76 provided on this box. 72 denotes the cookies intended for making wafers which are stacked in the compartments 70 and 71.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The lower plate 66 is pierced in the middle of its length with an orifice 78 for distributing cookies. This orifice is located directly above the wafer production wire platform. The plateau of
EMI5.1
work .Q, 2 is pierced with two holes 7, arranged so that, when this plate is in its position on the extreme right (as shown
EMI5.2
fig. 8) an orifice 79 coincides with the compartment 71 and receives from it the biscuit placed at the very bottom of the stack (as shown) while
EMI5.3
that the other orifice 79. coincides with the dispensing orifice 78.
When the work plate 65 is on the other hand in its extreme position
EMI5.4
left, one orifice coincides with the compartment po, while the other orifice 72 coincides with the dispensing orifice 78.
In order to impart a reciprocating movement to the working plate ± 2, so as to draw the cookies alternately from the compartments 70 and 71, the main shaft 30 is provided with a collar having a groove. cam 80 in which is engaged a button 81 integral with an arm 82 which can oscillate freely about an axis 83 provided on the stamped part
EMI5.5
23. The arm 82 is provided with a forked outer end in which engages a button integral with a portion 86 in the form of an ear of the plate. It can be seen from the fridge 12 that the casing 64 does not have a hanging rear wall. This allows the plates 65 and 66 to be put in place from the rear of this housing.
The above-described controls of the various moving parts of the device are synchronized, so that its operation takes place as follows: -
EMI5.6
During the return stroke of knife n (i.e. left â, right looking at Fig. 8) and after this knife has passed away from platform 57 and chimney 22 or during the initial part of the advance stroke of this knife, the working plate 65 of the cookie dispenser device is moved to deposit a cookie through the orifice
EMI5.7
.1 there on platform 7 ,. The feed rod is also lifted by whichever of the toothed elements 36 is selected and thereby lifts the block 32 of ice cream which is in the working position.
The upper part of this block 32 can therefore protrude to a predetermined extent above the chimney 22. During this forward movement, the knife 33 cuts the upper projecting part in question of the block of ice cream., The cut part remains on the knife 33. and is transported by it but it does not
EMI5.8
soon meet the stop 58.
The knife 33 continues its course, so that the stopped part of the block of ice cream is released from this knife and falls on the cookie which is already on the platform! The cookie dispenser work tray 65 is moved in the reverse direction of its previous movement and now deposits another cookie which falls over the portion of the ice cream layer already deposited on the first cookie. This is how a wafer filled with ice cream is formed.
For the ejection of the wafer thus made and now completed, the platform 57 is slidably mounted so as to be able to approach the front part of the machine; it carries a button 87 mounted to pivot and directed downwards. This button 87 has a diametral recess through which passes an angularly movable ejector arm 88 (FIG. 7). This arm 88 extends radially relative to a sleeve 89 which can rotate on
EMI5.9
an axis 90. This sleeve g2 is provided with another radial arm 91 provided with a finger 92 rising above it and constituting a pusher behind the wafer filled with ice cream. The arms 88 and 91 move together.
The sleeve

shown in broken lines in FIG. 7.
A spring 99 is provided to return the members 88, 57, 91, 95 and 98 to their normal positions.
As shown, the platform 57 is provided with a plate 100 forming a facing (Fig. 12) and provided with an upright rear cheek 101 which, in combination with the finger 22 of the arm 91, ensures the distribution movement. wafer with ice cream filling. This movement has the effect of pushing this wafer onto a receiving tray 102 from which the buyer can draw it.
It will be noted that an element 103 in the form of a plate which rests on the base 1, the positioning of which can be ensured in any suitable manner and which is held in position by the rotary knobs 104 comprises, incorporated therein , the chimney 22. the platform 57, the members 88 to 93 and the spring 99 of the ejector mechanism as well as the receiving plate 102. This makes it possible to release this whole assembly in order to clean it and sterilize it. read easily and conveniently while giving access to the knife 33 which can itself be easily disengaged from the sleeve for cleaning, sharpening and sterilization operations.
As represented by the broken lines in fig. 1, large orifices 105 can be made in the base 1 and in the cover plate 106 (Figs 8 and 9) which rests by its periphery against the wall of the cold room 1 of which it forms the ceiling. In this way, the working organs of the apparatus and those with which the ice cream comes in contact are kept at a temperature below the freezing point of water, which is satisfactory from a bacteriological point of view.
The cover plate 106 is provided with orifices providing passage to the upright parts of the apparatus; it may have a depression to accommodate the crank 25 and allow it to rotate freely. It may likewise include a raised part to allow movement of the crank 54.
It may not be necessary that the working parts with which the ice cream comes in contact are kept at a temperature as low as 0 C. In this regard the holes 105 of the base 1 can be omitted, and the cover plate 106 may or may not be expected. However, a temperature lower than the atmospheric temperature will be ensured for the parts of the appliance which come into contact with the ice cream since the base 1 is immersed in the cold room.
Lid tray 106 is also provided with a pendant neck terminating in port 17 of pedestal 1 and a housing above receiving tray 102, so that a buyer can lift the finished wafer. outside of this accommodation. A mechanical system can also be provided to lift the finished and ejected wafer to the surface of the cover plate 106.
As can be seen, the part 107 forming the jacket of the cold room 1 surrounds the zone containing the working parts of the apparatus and thus contributes to maintaining this zone at the lower temperature which is desired.
It should be understood that instead of the shaft 30 rotating under the action of a hand control, it can rotate under the action of a mechanical control, for example of an electric motor by the motor. By means of a suitable reduction gear, any suitable construction of a switch being provided for controlling this motor. In addition, any suitable stopper can be provided to interrupt the rotation of the 1 '. shaft 30 in order to ensure the rhythmic flow rate of the wafers one by one. Manual control of the mechanism can be combined with any suitable construction of coin operated mechanism, so that the apparatus can operate on its own without requiring supervisory personnel.
The details of constructive realization of this. apparatus can be modified, without departing from the invention, in the field of mechanical equivalences.
