<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the use of an erasure device embodying the invention, said device saturates the magnetic recording member and then, by a certain number of reversals of the action of the magnetic field on the recording organ, brought this recording organ back to a practically neutral magnetic state. recording9 the operation of the device may not bring the track elements or support exactly to point 40 of fig 02 which corresponds to the intersection of the axes B and Ho In such a case, a little background noise is left - it appears in the recording channel or medium after completion of the deletion process.
These variations are compensated for, in accordance with a characteristic of the invention,
by carrying out a final adjustment or adjustment of the support

The effect of the adjustment rotation is to raise or lower the residual point 40 along the B axis by a small amount.
The above description has been limited to the horizontal or longitudinal components of the magnetic fields to which the track or support elements are exposed. As most magnetic recordings are essentially made by longitudinal magnetization of the track elements or supported, any perpendicular magnetic flux which the track elements or support might exhibit is of secondary importance. However, the erasure devices of the invention such as the device 50 of the figol or the device
EMI4.1
positive in FIG. 03 also exhibit a succession of perpendicularly directed fields, the maxima of which correspond approximately to the zero points of the longitudinal field components.
At these locations the magnetic flux is oriented in a direction generally perpendicular to the guide path of the track or recording medium. The arrangement of the figol also acts effectively to erase substantially any perpendicular component of magnetic flux from the track elements or recording medium in a manner analogous to that indicated for the longitudinal components. The combined result is a highly efficient magnetic erase device of very simple construction.
Erasing device 50 has a valuable leakage flux which can cause interference with other elements of a magnetic recorder-reproducer device. For example, the flow field
EMI4.2
may adversely affect the reproductive system. "The presence of a large leakage flux can also result in a very uneconomical use of the available magnetic energy. It is therefore highly desirable that this leakage flux be reduced to a minimum. It is also highly desirable to use only one permanent magnet since the permanent magnet
EMI4.3
manent is the expensive part of such an erasure device.
Another desideratum for an erasing device using a magnet which generates a unidirectional field is that it saturates each portion of the recording member as this portion passes in front of it.
The device for erasing figs from 3 to 8 is remarkable in that
EMI4.4
that with a single small magnet saturation of the recording medium is obtained, the leakage flux is kept to a minimum, and the device still achieves a multiplicity of field reversals in the recording member leaving it in a practically demagnetized state.
Fig. 3 shows in detail the construction of the erasing device.

A non-magnetic spacer 63p comprising four lugs 64, extends in a direction substantially parallel to the magnet. plane of the magnet 60, and each of the four ears is adapted to fit into a notch 65 formed in a

Holes 68 are formed in the upper and lower mounting members, and holes 69 are provided in the first and second magnetizable plates 61,62, in alignment with the holes 68. Screws 70 dip through the holes 68, 69 , and screw into the holes 68 of the lower mounting plate 67 to

In a similar way, 1-'or-

The lower mounting ring 67 and the second magnetizable plate 62 are pressed against the bottom of the magnet 60 and against the bottom of the non-magnetic spacer. 63. The whole assembly is thus tightened by the two screws 70 to form a single unitary erasure device structure.
A multiplicity of magnetizable teeth, spaced between them, 75, 76, are connected to the first magnetizable member 61. As shown in FIG. 3, these teeth are integral with the member 61. These teeth may however, within the limits of the invention , be separate teeth, detached.
One or more magnetizable teeth 77,78, are connected to the second of the magnetizable plates, 62, As shown in figo39 these teeth may be integral with the plate 62, but it comes within the scope of the invention that these teeth are separate detachable teeth The teeth 75976 extend in the direction of the magnetizable plate 62, and the teeth 77, 78 extend in the direction of the magnetizable plate 61.
Preferably each of the teeth of the multiplicity of teeth extends in a direction substantially parallel to the plane of the magnet 600 The tooth 77 is placed between the teeth 75, 76 and is separated from them, and tooth 76 is placed in and separated from teeth 77, 780 Each of teeth 75, 76 is a north magnetic pole, and each of teeth 77, 78 is a south magnetic pole. As a result, magnetic fields of opposite directions will be generated between the neighboring edges of the successive teeth.
A track guide or recording medium forming an adjuster, 80, is secured between the upper and lower mounting plates 66, 67, by means of the screw 81 which passes through a hole formed in the upper plate. re 669 passes through an eccentric perforation 82 of the tape or tape guide 80, and is threadably engaged with a hole 83 formed in the lower mounting plate 670 A recording member guide arm 84 extends outwardly from guide member 80 for engagement with an edge of the recording member as it travels past the erase device, The guide member 80 adjusts the distance between the recording member and the teeth 77, 76 and 78,
and the guide arm 84 substantially locates the recording member in the middle of the erasing device as shown in fig. 4, in which the recording member is represented by a band identified. by the reference 85,
The main purpose of the guide and adjustment member 80 is to adjust the position of the recording member with respect to the erasing device. This adjustment can be observed with reference to FIG. 6 in which there is shown a top view of a portion of a magnetic recorder-reproducer. The path 85 of the recording device is represented by a dashed line,
and the recording member moves in the direction of the arrow past the guide column 90 in front of the erasing mechanism generally designated 91. beyond the recorder or repeater 92, between the drive shaft 93 and pressure roller 94, and then beyond guide column 95. The recording member preferably engages the first two teeth 75, 77 of the bridging erase device. free space between them where it is saturated.
From this location, in the direction of movement of the recording member, the following teeth of the erasing device are recessed on the recording member, Thus, being further apart from the successive voids between the teeth of the device erase, the amplitude of the flux in each portion of the recorder as it scrolls past the device is gradually reduced and is, reversed until as explained in relation with figso1 and 2,
the resulting flow in the organ. recording is noticeably null
For the purpose of adjusting the fields of flux acting on the recording member as it scrolls past and leaves the recording device 919 the adjusting member 80 is mounted eccentrically on the screw 81 .
By rotating the organ of. Adjustment 80, the position of the recording member with respect to the erasing teeth 76, 78 is slightly altered, and this change varies the field acting on each portion of the member.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
recording when it leaves the erasure device 910 Thus, the guide and adjustment unit 80 is used for the fine adjustments of the erasure device,
The coarse or approximate adjustment of the erasing device is obtained by rotating the entire device 91 around the screw 96 in order to adjust the position of the device 91 with respect to the recorder-reproducer.
Figs. 7 and 8 show a modification of the erasing device, in which the spacing between successive teeth increases progressively in the direction of movement of the recording member past the erasing device. 'a device is used, the structure of which is that of FIGS. 7 and 8, it is not essential that the recording member moves away from the teeth when it passes in front of the device,
although the final adjustment for the magnetic neutralization of the recording member should generally be achieved by varying the spacing between the recording member and the interents of the device. This results from the fact that the increasing spacing between successive teeth by itself reduces the concentration of flux in the recording member as it moves past the teeth and a portion of the recording member. will be saturated when it bridges the gap between the first two teeth When this portion bridges the free space between the second and third teeth, the active field on this portion is considerably less due to the 1-'spacing greater between the teeth When said portion bridges the gap between the third and fourth teeth,
9 the field is again considerably reduced. By proper spacing of the teeth, the active field on the portion of the recording device as it leaves the effective field of the erasing device will bring the recording device back, substantially, back to the original. neutral magnetic state.
Although the description of the invention provides for the use of a permanent magnet, it should be understood that an electromagnet having a winding connected to a source of direct electric current may also be employed and that 'a unidirectional field is produced by each of these types of magnets.
Although what are currently considered to be preferred embodiments of the invention have been described, it is evident to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made thereto without departing from the art. spirit of invention
