FORGE WELDABLE STEEL,
The present invention relates to a steel which is distinguished in that it can easily be welded in the forge, or in a corresponding manner, despite being "wedged".
It is well known that it is non-chocked steel which is the easiest to weld in the forge. As soon as a steel of normal analysis is calmed, it becomes "dry" and difficult to weld.
Despite its good weldability, unlined steel has a certain number of drawbacks, among which we can mention in particular its tendency to become brittle, especially at low temperatures, As this steel is the normal material for the manufacture of chains, this property is very disadvantageous.
Frequent chain breaks, especially in cold weather, show the latent danger of brittle steel
It is well known that wedged steel does not offer the danger of becoming brittle. When it has a low manganese content, the salted steel becomes brittle too, but not as much as the unblocked steel However, with regard to the steel which is to be used for the manufacture of chains and other components analogues, it is essential that it be weldable by forging and manufacturers have had to suppress the setting of the steel, although by this setting the brittleness is considerably reduced.
Heretofore no solution had been found to the problem of making a steel having both good stress weldability and little tendency to become brittle, especially at low temperatures.
The present invention has made it possible to produce a wedged steel which has excellent forge weldability while at the same time exhibiting no tendency to become brittle.
Extensive research and testing has resulted in

show that it is possible to produce such a steel when the carbon, manganese and silicon content of the steel is regulated in a certain way, that is to say, when, according to the invention, silicon is used in amount equal to or less than 0.04% + K Mn% or K is a factor which for a maximum carbon content of about 0.1% is about 0.1 or less, and which as the carbon content increases , decreases so that the K factor for a carbon content of about 0.2% is about 0.04,
the manganese being present in an amount of from about 0.3% to about 2.0%. A manganese content of more than about 0.6% gives better results than steel with a lower manganese content.
Thus, the K factor also depends on the carbon content and it is higher the lower the carbon content, If this is considerably less than 0.1, K can be a little higher than 0 , 1.
Particularly advantageous results are obtained with a manganese content of about 1.2 to 2.0% and a silicon and carbon content as defined above.
The application of the above rule makes it possible at all times to produce infallibly a steel which has good forging weldability and at the same time is free from brittleness.
The steel according to the invention can be mixed with small amounts of substances which give it a fine grain, namely aluminum, vanadium, titanium, zircon, niobium, etc. ,,. This prevents, as we know, aging.
A number of examples of steel produced according to the invention will be given below with an indication of the forge weldability of the steel.

The steel, in the above tests, contained quite insignificant amounts of the harmful sulfur and / or phosphorus impurities.
It is clear that the invention constitutes a considerable technical progress, since it is possible by means of the working rule mentioned above to manufacture articles of steel weldable in the forge ¯., For example chains which do not, as at present, have to be subjected from time to time to the expensive and inconvenient treatment of annealing.
