SYSTEME REGULATEUR DE TENSION APPLICABLE NOTAMMENT AUX CHARGEURS DE
BATTERIES.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

VOLTAGE REGULATOR SYSTEM APPLICABLE IN PARTICULAR TO CHARGERS OF
BATTERIES.
This invention relates generally to electrical voltage regulating systems and more particularly to an improved apparatus with a special circuit arrangement for adjusting the output voltage of battery chargers or battery suppressing installations.
In regulator systems of this kind known heretofore, the charge current exceeded a desired value during the search for adjustment. In various cases or operating circumstances, the load current varied considerably, which created an oscillatory regime before the point where the desired operating conditions were reached. This state of affairs gives rise to practical difficulties which the present apparatus obviates by suppressing the oscillatory regime of the charging current, thereby making it possible to achieve better operating conditions and various advantages.
An object of the invention is to allow the production of a voltage regulator system in which the oscillations of the charging current are suppressed, so as to improve stability.
Another object of the invention is to allow the production of a saturable reactance amplifier which can be used in a voltage regulator system and thanks to which more amplification is obtained than with the reactance amplifiers previously proposed and this, by means of the new application of an original design feedback winding.
The attached schematic drawing shows the circuit diagram of the voltage regulator apparatus, object of the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Briefly described, the invention is embodied in a battery charger of the conventional type], but modified by the connection of a saturable reactance coil in its input circuit and comprising a comparison standard comprising a magnetic assembly formed by a. permanent magnet and an electromagnet connected across the output circuit of this charger, so as to produce a magneto-motive force proportional to the output voltage of this magnetic assembly, and an amplifier with saturable or magnetic reactance whose circuit d 'input is connected to another winding of said magnetic assembly,
so as to be controlled according to the difference in the magneto-motive forces of this permanent magnet and of this electromagnet, the output circuit of the latter being connected to the saturation winding of the first reactance coil, so that the The impedance of the latter is modified to keep the output voltage substantially constant despite the variations occurring - in the input voltage, in the load current, in the age of the rectifiers or in various other factors.
The present device is an improvement which results directly from Belgian patent N 468,768 filed on October 25, 1946 and belonging to the same Company. In addition to the results obtained by the apparatus described in this prior patent, a negative reaction voltage is obtained from an additional winding mounted on the central branch of the core of the last saturable reactance coil at the same time as of the saturation winding traversed by the dc current The feedback voltage is applied to a previous stage of the magnetic amplifier by mounting in series the additional winding with a dc saturation winding and with the rectifier by which is energized a winding placed downstream.
The additional winding is arranged such that its polarity is such that any momentary increase in direct current flow in the last reactance coil produces a reduction in direct current ampere-turns on the reactance coil of a previous stage, the reverse is also true. When the negative feedback winding is applied to magnetic amplifiers (as shown) it provides a means of suppressing oscillation in the load current.
Another practical result of this feedback circuit is that it improves the gain of the magnetic amplifier even if it is connected as a negative feedback circuit so as to suppress oscillation. When there is no load, the AC flow of the saturable reactance coil connects only the two windings with AC current but as DC saturation is increased part of the AC flow torque the windings of the central branch. As a result, the flow of alternating current increases with saturation.
This flow of alternating current generates in the additional winding a frequency voltage twice that of the alternating current source, while the amplitude of the voltage of the additional winding increases with the saturation in direct current.
The alternating current voltage induced by the additional winding is rectified over half the wave by the rectifier of the previous stage to which it is connected and despite the feedback assembly of the 1-winding, the rectifier does not allow the passage of the additional current only in the same direction as the original saturation current in this stage. Thus the additional rectified current is added to the original rectified current, which results in an increased saturation for the stage of the preceding reactance coil.
The accompanying drawing shows an alternating current source 1 connected to the input terminals 2 and 1 of the charger, and a battery connected across the output terminals .2 and .2 of a charging circuit. Between the input and output terminals is placed a charger of conventional type comprising a transformer 7, a rectifier 8 of the dry disc type operating over the entire wave, and a reactance coil 9 forming a filter. Another reactance coil 10 forming a regulator is mounted in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
series with the primary windings of transformer 1 and with the alternating current source 1.
Part of the output voltage of the charger is applied to the windings of a controller device 11 which compares the magnetomotive force produced by these windings with that of a permanent magnet 12 and which governs the impedance of other windings mounted on it following the difference between the two magneto-motor forces.
EMI3.1
The impedance of these other windings regulates the voltage which is applied to the input of a saturable reactance amplifier comprising saturable coils 13. and 6s of the rectifiers 17. 18, 20 and 21 with dry discs acting on the entire wave, and reactance coils 23 2 2 and 26 The output circuit of the magnetic amplifier is connected to the saturation winding 10c mounted on the reactance coil 10 forming a regulator. Winding 10d is wound around the central core of reactance coil 10 above the saturation winding.

the flow of alternating current of the #: saturable reactan coil 10 unites only the two windings 10a and 10b. As the DC saturation is increased by the coil 10c, part of the AC flow connects the coils 10d and 10c wound on the central branch of the reactance coil 10, so that the amplitude of the voltage in winding 10d increases with saturation.
This alternating current voltage flowing through winding 10d is twice the frequency of the alternating current source and increasing in amplitude with direct current saturation in winding 10c. The

AC voltage generated by winding 10d is rectified over half the wave by rectifier 19 to which it is connected. This rectifier 19 allows an additional current to flow only in the same direction as that of the original saturation current flowing through 1-'in; bearing 15a. Thus, the additional rectified current supplied by the winding 10d is added to the rectified current, original of the winding 15c which results in an increased saturation and in a greater gain for

The controller 11 and the saturable reactance or the magnetic amplifier are preferably constructed to form an accessory assembly which can be easily adjusted prior to the final assembly of the complete charger. The adjustment mode of this accessory assembly is described below to facilitate understanding of its operation. During adjustment, terminals 34 and 35 are connected to a suitable alternating current source whose midpoint is connected to terminal 36. The terminals

2 and 8 are also connected to a suitable alternating current source whose midpoint is connected to terminal 36.

The voltage between terminals 39 and 40 is initially adjusted according to a predetermined value which must not be less than the minimum calibration point of the instrument ,. dial (not shown) with which the charger is to be used.
Thus, for example, if the charger is to be used in combination with a battery supplying a telephone exchange having a nominal voltage of 48 volts, the voltage between terminals 39 and 40 should initially be set to a value between 44 and 56 volts on the dial of 1-device

The variable reactance coils Z2. bzz 24. 2 ′ and 26 are initially set to the minimum inductance value. The inductance of each of these coils is then lower than that of the alternating current windings such as 13a and 13b of the corresponding saturable reactance coils. We gradually increase the inductance of coil 22. Au

<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
increases as the inductance of coil 22 is further increased.
The balancing bridge is not clearly defined. It is therefore desirable to increase the inductance of the reactance coil 22 until the voltage flowing through the winding 13c has just started to increase to allow maximum sensitivity to be obtained. The voltmeter is then transferred to the winding 14c and the reactance coil 23 is adjusted in a similar fashion, then the coils 24 are adjusted in the same way,
25 and 26. Since the reactance coil 10 is not included in the accessory assembly in question a resistor can be connected across terminals 50 and 51 to replace the winding 10c during the adjustment of this assembly. conductors leading to winding 10d being connected
After the above-mentioned accessory assembly has been adjusted as described in the previous paragraph, it is assembled and connected to the other elements of the complete charger as shown. The fraction of the output voltage which is applied to the windings traversed by the direct current of the controller device 11 is determined by the values of resistors 41 to 44.
Resistor 42 is calibrated against the output voltage to allow easy adjustment of the charger inductor, so as to give the output voltage any desired value within the operating range of the charger which may vary. 'extend for example between 44 and 56 volts. Resistors 41 and 44 are made adjustable to ensure the required correspondence between the calibration of resistor 42 and the output voltage. If we adjust resistor 42 according to the nominal value of the output voltage indicated on its calibration scale, we adjust resistors 41 and 44 until the current drawn is approximately equal to two thirds of the expected capacity. charger.
Experiments have shown that the output voltage is maintained with an approximation of more or less than 2% of the desired nominal value which is determined by the adjustment of resistance 4.2. 'For all loads included in the capacity of the charger even if there are variations in the input voltage and in the frequency of 10% more or less or if the rectifiers are old and less efficient. Charges greater than the charger's rated capacity draw current to the battery and lower its terminal voltage, but the battery is recharged to the desired nominal voltage as soon as the charge decreases to a value within the charger's capacity. .
For a half-speed load, the current flowing through the DC windings of each of coils 10 and 13 to 16 has a value approximately equal to the arithmetic mean between its minimum value and its maximum value when the impedance of the AC windings of the controller device 11 is approximately halfway between its minimum value and its maximum value. If the output voltage changes as a result of variations in the input voltage, in the load current, or for other causes, the net magnetic flux flowing through the internal branches of the controller device 11 varies correspondingly. .
This has a repercussion on the impedance of the alternating current windings wound on these same branches in the direction of a variation of the impedance of the coil 10 forming the regulator in a direction suitable for provoking by the voltage which acts on it. the transformer 2 either a sufficient increase or a sufficient decrease to compensate for the initial variation.
The supply of alternating current to the raster amplifier can be ensured, if necessary, directly by the input terminals of the charger and can include an alternating voltage regulator. But the research which led to the invention has shown that 'we. obtains a better regulation by supplying the reactance amplifier from transformer 7. This is because the voltage applied to this transformer increases as the load increases, which ensures a greater gain in the reactance amplifier for loads. increased. A greater variation in the impedance of the coil 10 forming a regulator is thus obtained.

The details of the constructive embodiment of the apparatus can be modified, without departing from the invention, in the field of technical equivalences.
