<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

DEVICE FOR CLOSING THE ENDS OF A CONTAINER.
The present invention relates to a device for closing the ends of a container, the body of which is made of parchment material such as strong paper or the like.
In presently known containers of this kind, the bottoms are generally made of parchment material. It is difficult to fix these bottoms and, consequently, leaks frequently appear at their joints, especially if the containers are filled under pressure.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks.
To this end, in the device proposed for closing the ends of a container, each of said ends is closed by a metal plate fixed by crimping to the corresponding edge of the aforesaid body,
In an advantageous embodiment of the object of the invention, each aforementioned metal plate has a flange which is folded down to form a groove enclosing the aforementioned edge.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment, the aforementioned rim is consolidated by an internal counterford profiled following said rim and whose height is at least equal to that of the inner flank of the aforementioned groove, this buttress being, if necessary, folded down at the same time. time that said ledge.
The present invention also relates to a plug having a head in the form of a bowl, which surmounts a body at the bottom of which is arranged a nozzle communicating with the bottom of said bowl by a passage passing through said body. Its purpose is to provide a plug, the closure of which does not require removal of the so-called “plunger” tube which may be used to fill or empty the receptacle to which this plug is fixed.
To this end, in the plug according to 1-'invention, at least one duct starting from the bottom of the aforementioned bowl, opens out under the latter, laterally to the aforesaid body, the passages of the aforementioned channel and of the duct being controlled at the same time. . In an advantageous embodiment of the object of the invention, the passage of the aforementioned path is controlled by a ball valve, while an elastic washer, for example of rubber,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
carried by the aforementioned body and coming under the aforementioned bowl, controls the passage of said duct outside this body.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description of a device for closing the ends of a container as well as from the description of a plug, given below by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.

In the various figures, the same reference notations designate elements which are identical or perform identical functions.
The container to be closed comprises a body 1 made of chimney material such as strong paper or the like. This body will, for example, consist of several layers of paper applied one on top of the other and glued. Each of the ends of the container is then closed by a metal plate 2 or 3, fixed by crimping to the corresponding edge 4 of the body 1. Each metal plate has a rim 5 which is folded down to form a groove 6 enclosing the aforementioned edge. .
At least one of the flanks 7 or 8 of the groove 6 is pleated to reinforce the crimping. FIG. 1 represents a device in which the outer flank 7 of the groove 6 is pleated; FIG. 2 shows a device in which the two sides 7 and 8 of said groove are pleated.
To ensure a better seal to the receptacles and to give them greater stiffness, the rim 5. is consolidated by an internal buttress 9, profiled along this rim 5 - and the height of which is equal to that of the internal side 8. throat 6. @
The buttress 9 can be modeled on the inner side of the groove 6, as indicated in figures .3, and 4. It can consist of a U-profile, as shown in figure 5.
It can also be made of a strip of sheet metal having a curved longitudinal edge 10 and which, after transverse bending at right angles, is, when crimping the metal plate 2 or 3, clamped together with the edge 5 of said plate (see
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
figures 7 and 6).
'The rim 5 can also be stiffened by a rod 11 placed at the bottom of the groove 6 (Figure 8).

Invqntion, the edge 4 of the container is fortified by a bead 12 produced by means of a metal strip fixed to said edge by crimping. The metal plate 2, for example, then encloses the bead 12
In this case, the fixing, to the container, of the metal plate 2, the closing part of which can be lined with a disc 13 made of a flexible material such as cork, is facilitated by suspending, by the bead 12, the

container to a gallows.
If, as shown in Figure 19, it is a question of closing a frustoconical container 14, the gallows is, for example, a trunk

of hollow cone 80 surrounding said container and divided into two halves held in place by a belt 15.
Generally, it is advantageous to externally cover the sealing part of the metal plate 2 or 3 with a sheet of hard cardboard 16.
The latter is held in place by a crimp 17 of the corresponding edge 4 of the body 1, after adaptation, by crimping, of the metal plate 2 or 3. The crimp 17 can be made, either by a simple fold (figure
EMI3.5
12) either by a double fold (Figure 11), or again by bending (Figure 13). FIG. 10 shows the conformation which is then given to the metal plate 2 or 3, before it is crimped on the container 1.
If it is a question of closing an opening of fairly large dimensions,
EMI3.6
rables, it is possible to achieve, in the sheet of hard cardboard:> 16, a central void 20, by cutting a plate 210 This plate z can then be used to back up a closure device of smaller dimensions (figure 20).
In addition, the hard cardboard sheet 16 can be pressed against the metal bottom 2 or 3 by a clamping ring 23 (see figure 15) held in place by the crimping of the edge 40
EMI3.7
On the other hand, it should be noted that the crimping efficiency can be increased by bending (figure: 1.3 and z) - or by bending (figure 1 to 8) the end of the flange 50
According to the invention, arrangements are also provided to allow the easy opening of the closed containers as described above., In the case of a small capacity container such as a bottle, the rim 5 of the plate metal 2 or 3 is extended by an ear 24.

In embodiments for large capacity containers, such as drums, two metal plates 2 and 3 closing the ends of the receptacle are joined by at least one spacer, preferably central.
This spacer may consist of a double rod 25 in the form of a hairpin (figure 23) whose tips 26 are fixed, for example to the metal plate 2, while the plate 3 is attached to the other end. of this spacer Welds assemble; the spacer 25 and the plates 2 and 3, the points 26 being fixed, at points symmetrical with respect to the center of a plug 27 which the plate 20 carries
According to the invention, the stopper 27 (FIG. 24) has the shape of a cup, fixed to the plate 2 by a bulge 83 and by stapling. A seal 77, made of flexible material such as rubber, is clamped between the folds 78 and 79 of this stapling.
The stopper 27 will advantageously be made of aluminum sheet.
EMI3.9

The spacer joining the plates 2 and 3, can also be a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
rod 28 (figure 25), the ends 31 of which are threaded to be engaged by screwing, on the one hand, in a plug 29 closing off an opening, preferably central, which the metal plate 3 presents, and, on the other : part, in a bung 30 which carries the plate 2 and which is perforated with an orifice 82 whose passage is controlled by a valve 32 fixed under the bung by a nut 33 (Figure 25). The stopper 29 carries cells 3.4 for the introduction of a screw key.
The plates 2 and 3 can also be braced by a so-called "plunger" tube 35 (shown 22), one end of which is engaged and fixed in a tube 36 arranged on a plug 37 closing an opening, preferably central, made by example in the metal plate 3 and the other end of which is threaded to be engaged, by screwing, in a nozzle 38 of a bung 39 which the other metal plate 2 carries; the tube 36 has orifices 60 giving access to the inside of the tube 35. The end of the tube 35, engaged in the tube 36, can be screwed or pinned therein,
For the closing of the containers, the metal plates 2 and 3 are crimped by the action of knurls or with the press.
The crimping by knurls allows, in particular, the pleating of the sides 7 and 8 of the groove 6; in this case, the rim 5 is progressively closed on the edge 4 of the body 1 and deformed by knobs 41 and 42 (FIG. 21) which give it its final appearance. If the plate 3 is lined by a cardboard box having a central void 20 or by a cardboard held by means of a clamping ring 23, a part resting in this void or in this ring 23, serves to form the crimp 17. by pressing wheels pressing the flange 5 against this part.
The crimping can also be effected by deformation of an elastic packing 44, for example of rubber, which, enclosing the corresponding end of the container, fitted with its closure device 2 or 3, is pressed into a piston mechanism. 45 (figure 20); this device is particularly advantageous for the closure of previously filled containers.
The present invention further relates to a plug having a head 46 (Figures 27, 30 and 31) in the form of a cup, which surmounts a body 47 at the bottom of which is arranged a nozzle 38. This nozzle communicates with the bottom 49 of the nozzle. cup 46 by a path 48 passing through body 47 and is threaded to allow the screwing of a tube 35, called a "plunger".
At least one duct 50 starting from the bottom 49 opens out under the bowl 46 laterally to the body 47. The passages of the channel 48 and of the duct 50 are controlled simultaneously for the filling and emptying of the containers.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 27, the path 48 is controlled by a ball valve 51, while an elastic washer 52, for example of rubber, carried by the body 47 and coming under the bowl 46, controls the passage of the ducts 50, outside the body 47 = The ball 51 is supported by a spring 54 against a joint 53.
In the normal position of the ball 51 and of the seal 52, the communication from the inside to the outside of the container is interrupted., For the filling of this container, a connector is advantageously used comprising two concentric pipes 55 and 56. (figure 28). The inner pipe 55 for supplying the liquid into the receptacle is provided, at its end, with a hoop 57.
When the connector is fixed in the bowl 46 of the plug, this hoop 57 rests on the ball 51 and thus establishes communication with the interior of the container; for its part, the outer pipe 56 is provided with lugs 58 which engage in the conduits 50 and push back the elastic washer 52; the latter is thus spaced from the edges of the conduits 50, which allows the escape, through the pipe 56, of air or gas, discharged by the arrival of liquid.
For emptying, the pipe 56 is replaced by a pipe 59 devoid of lugs (Figure 29); in this case, the washer moves away under the gas pressure coming, through this pipe 59, from the outside of the receptacle, the liquid enters the "plunger" through the orifices 60 (figure 22) and is evacuated by the pipe 55, the ball 51 still being pushed back by the hoop 57.
In the embodiments shown in Figures 30 and 31, the conduit 50 passes through the body 47; a rotary shutter placed in

this body ensures the simultaneous control of the passages of the track 48 and of the duct 50. In FIG. 30. the rotary shutter is a nut 61 pierced by two channels which respectively constitute a section of the track 48 and a section of the track. conduit 50. The nut 61 is preferably a truncated cone, the large base 62 of which is located in the bottom of the bowl 46. In the bowl 46 is placed a connector 63 in which are formed two pipes 64 and 65 .
The base 62 of the nut 61 is provided with lugs 66 which engage in holes provided in the base of the fitting 63, to ensure the correspondence between the pipe 64 and the track 48 and between the pipe 65 and the conduit 50. It is thus possible to control the passages of the channel 48 and of the conduit 50 by rotating the connector 63 which centers the nut 61 secured to this connector.
In FIG. 31, the rotary shutter is a plate 68 perpendicular to the axis 69 of the bung; the plate 68 is pierced with two slots 70 and 71 corresponding respectively to the track 48 and to the duct 50. The plate 68 is supported by a spring 72 against a partition 73 crossed by the track 48 and by the duct 50; the plate 68 carries an extension 74 crossing the partition 73, which is provided with a square end 75 engaging in a hole provided in a suitable connection, similar to 63. The plate 68, normally in the closed position, , is brought into the open position by rotating the connector 63 which drives it with it. The opening 70 opens directly into a chamber 76 provided above the nozzle 38 and which contains the spring 72.
The bungs of each of the types described can be closed by a safety plug such as 84 (figure 27), screwed into the bowl 46 or by a guarantee plate 85 (figure '25) engaged in a circular groove 86 made. in this bowl 46.
The containers obtained by the device according to the invention are light, easy to handle and inexpensive; however, they are sufficiently sealed to be used for conveying liquids under pressure. The bungs fitted to them allow easy filling and emptying of these containers.
He must. it should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described above and that many modifications can be made to it without departing from the scope of the present patent application.
One could, in particular, use the cup-shaped caps on any other container with a metal bottom.
We could also replace ,, in one of the bungs described, the ball valve by a plate or conical seat valve.
In addition, the hard cardboard sheet could be replaced by a plastic sheet or a metal sheet.
