REVENDICATIONS.

IMPROVEMENTS IN SPINDLE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES '
OR CANS.
The invention relates to improvements in methods of manufacturing spindles or cans from metal tubes.
Some spindles or bobbins are suitable, during the winding operation, to be engaged on a rotating spindle, so that the large end of the spindle or bobbin firmly grips a male member of the spindle elastically influenced in the radial direction.
Existing pins intended for this use are established for use with wooden bobbins or cans, in which the difference between the outside and inside diameters is much greater than the difference between the outside and inside diameters of the big end. a metal spindle or can made from a metal tube by a rotary hammering operation.
It is an object of the invention to provide a method of manufacture by which one end of a metal spindle or can can accommodate a reduced effective internal diameter without influencing the external diameter and without making use of a separate liner or liner, by thus allowing the manufacture of a one-piece spindle or can.
The invention is a method of making a tubular metal spindle or can comprising reducing the diameter of the end of a metal tube by a rotary hammering process, and the subsequent application of a rotary hammer. pressure at the end of the tube by means of a male punch with a collar or shoulder, fitting tightly in the reduced portion of the tube and whose shoulder or collar bears against the end of the tube, in such a manner that the reduced portion of the tube is pushed back into the adjacent portion of the tube, in folds and overlapping thereof. The invention also consists of a one-piece tubular metal spindle or can manufactured by a process comprising the above method.
. To the effect that the invention can be well understood and easily put into practice, reference will be made hereinafter to the accompanying drawing, in which

Fig. 1 illustrates an elevation in longitudinal section of a spindle or can according to the present invention; and,
Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, illustrate the successive phases or operations in the manufacture of such a spindle or can.
It will be appreciated that a method according to the present invention can be applied to either end of a spindle or bobbin to reduce its effective internal diameter, but a preferred method will be described below with reference to the coarse end of the spindle or bobbin.
One end of a cylindrical metal tube a, fig. 2 of an external diameter equal to the required external diameter of the large end or portion a 1, figure 1, of the spindle or bobbin to be manufactured, is reduced in diameter as in a2, figo 3, in a rotary hammering machine .
It will be observed that this hammering operation results in the formation of an inclined face shoulder a3, between the main portion a of the tube and the reduced portion a2, and this shoulder is then made more abrupt or squared in profile as in a4. fig. 4, in a press by means of an annular punch, not shown, which fits around the reduced portion a2, of the tube. Subsequently, end pressure is applied to the tube by means of a male punch b, which fits tightly into the reduced portion of the tube and is provided with a shoulder b 1 which bears against the end of the tube. said portion.
The application of this pressure at the end results in the reduction of the reduced portion a2 of the tube into the portion adjacent to the main part a of this tube, until it is in a double overlap a2, a5 . see fig. 5, in portion a 1, of the main part which should become the big end; thus at the location of the large end there remains a triple thickness of metal, and the effective internal diameter of the end is equivalent to the diameter of the male punch b used in the pressing operation.
During the pressing operation, the outer wall may, at the location of the large end, be supported by means of an annular sleeve.
Finally, external peripheral grooves or grooves a6 may be formed on the large end for receiving loops or rings of springs in a known manner, clearance a7 being maintained for this purpose, and the main portion of the tube a may. be brought to the desired shape by a rotary hammering operation as in a8.
As previously indicated, the end a9. fig. 1, of tube a, can be treated in a manner analogous to that of the large end.
