PAVEMENT CARROSSABLE ET DEMONTABLE A JOINTS HELICOIDAUXo DESCRIPTION.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

DRIVE AND DEMOUNTABLE PAVEMENT WITH HELICOIDAL JOINTS o DESCRIPTION.
The artificial paving stones constituting the paving are of 2 forms: A and B, without or with superficial grooves; see fig. 1 a) and b). They have a head (t) and a body (c). In the prototype the head is 3 cm. tall and body 7 cm.
BODY. - Pavers A. Fictitiously separated from the head by a horizontal plane, the Corps of A presents an upper face with a regular hexagonal outline (10 in :. of radius in the prototype). Its lower face is the vertical projection of the upper face (fig. 2).
Between these 2 faces the solid is delimited by a helical surface with identical 6 sides generated by a uniform dextrorotatory rotation of 1 higher hexagon around its center with a total amplitude of 60 accompanied by a uniform vertical descent of 7 cm . (in the prototype).
We easily obtain a wooden model of this body by superimposing about fifteen triplex plates; hexagonal (total thickness 7 cm) and then rotating each plate 4 17 60 in relation to the underlying plate, and fixing it there with fine spikes.
It remains to remove the small stairs that presents the side surface thus obtained -. see perspective drawing (fig. 3).
Pavers B. The body of B (fig.4) has upper and lower faces identical to those of A. As for the 6 faces, they have, alternately, a flat surface and a broken helical surface.
The first, all identical, ensure the contact of the blocks B between them; the seconds, all identical, ensure the contact of the B with the A. Their helical surface is therefore only the reproduction of that of the Bodies.
Caught between 2 vertical planes passing through their axis and through 2 successive vertices of their hexagonal generatrix.
To obtain a mold of Bodies B, it suffices to insert, in the angles 4 'of an equilateral triangular frame, 3 segments cut from the wooden model described above of bodies A (see fig. 6).
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
We therefore see that if we constitute a belt formed of 6 Bodies, we obtain a kind of nut in the center of which there is a void in which can be housed exactly one Body A thanks to a screwing movement of 60 (fig. .5) and this process can extend indefinitely on the surface. Bodies are supported by B and vice versa. By unscrewing 3 neighboring A, the B are freed. The paving is thus removable in all points while being formed of interdependent paving stones.
SUCH Cobbles A. Their head is a disc whose circumference is circumscribed to the generating hexagon of the Body. It comes to rest on the 6 neighboring bodies B at the precise moment when the screwing of 60 is completed, which opposes any untimely rotation.
Its upper face has 3 notches (e) providing a grip for a special unscrewing device (fig. 8) These notches can be made inconspicuous by filling them with a suitable mastic.
Pavers B their head is a prism superimposed on the Body with 3 plane facets and 3 concave circular facets allowing the admission of the heads of pavers A.
These heads ensure a better solidarity of the whole and a perfect regularity of the general surface of the paving; they introduce a baffle in the joints opposing the penetration of mud between the bodies.
Their upper face can be embellished with a system of grooves allowing faster drying and providing better grip for the tires (fig.7). It can also be colored in the mass so as to be able to obtain a polychrome paving.
ACHIEVEMENT ,, - In principle the pavers are made of rich concrete, energetically vibrated so as to ensure a compressive strength of at least 900 K / cm2
The dimensions shown are not fixed; one can envisage paving stones of various formats, even real slabs designed according to the same principles (but to be handled mechanically) for runways for example.
Given the solidarity of the elements a special foundation is not to be expected. It will suffice to lay the paving stones - the B first, then the A - on good soil, possibly drained and compressed but always carefully profiled and covered with a carpet of sand or fine ash. By adding more or less sand to the bottom of the cells intended for A pavers, we can in a way regulate the pressure on the ground.
Since, on the other hand, the manufacture of these paving stones does not raise any special difficulty, the cost of this type of paving will not be prohibitive.
The installation will be done with care, preferably according to a preliminary installation plan.
The "pavement seems to be especially suitable for areas whose coating must combine, with solidity., A pleasant aspect: such are public places, courtyards, plazas, wide avenues, landing stages, walks, etc.
Thanks to its dismantling, it will be possible to easily remedy the slightest defects in its surface, just as it can easily be disassembled and reconstituted to carry out underground work.
