<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING ALIPHATIC ANHYDRINDES.
The present invention relates to continuous processes for the manufacture of lower aliphatic anhydrides by direct oxidation of the corresponding aldehydes in a liquid bath consisting of a mixture of the aldehyde, of the corresponding avide, of the same anhydride. to the anhydride to be produced, an auxiliary substance often considered as a diluent and salt catalysts, the oxidation being carried out by means of air or of a gas containing oxygen, blown into the bath.
The essential object of the invention is to effect the conversion of the aldehyde to the anhydride with a high yield, without there being, to an appreciable degree, water uptake by the anhydride formed and without causing any significant absorption of water by the anhydride formed. '' it is necessary to continuously return diluent or anhydride to the oxidation bath
The invention comprises, in particular, the application, as diluents and for constitution in a high proportion, in particular a proportion of at least three quarters of the oxidation bath of bodies which have boiling points above. 200, which are chemically inert at the anhydrous temperature range, which are liquid at these temperatures and which, at the same time, do not dissolve water,
are insoluble therein and are miscible in all proportions with the anhydride to be produced and the corresponding avid, giving mixtures which are suspected of dissolving the catalyst salts in the usual proportions of use. .
Such bodies, which are extremely low volatile, then play a role limited to that of diluents which, simply, considerably increase the relative volatility of the water within the oxidation bath and thus, used in the aforesaid high proportion, in particular of at least three quarters of the bath, determine the entrainment of the water, as it is formed, by the gas current passing through this bath, without the diluent itself being entrained.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Not being required, like all the auxiliary bodies recommended up to now, to combine the function of diluent and another generally preponderant with respect to this function of diluent, the bodies applied in accordance with the invention no. 'do not lead to the drawbacks associated with 1-employment of these multifunctional auxiliary bodies.
The proportion of diluent or mixture of diluents corresponding to the definition given above is preferably between 75 and 90% of the total weight of the bath.
There is no upper limit to the boiling point of the diluent, provided that the latter is liquid under the operating conditions and that its viscosity is not too high, which would have the effect of reducing the intimacy of contact between liquid and gas.
The Applicant has found that, among the bodies meeting these different conditions, the esters give particularly interesting results. All classes of esters can be used, whether they are formed by the combination of a mineral acid, an organic, aliphatic or aromatic acid, a mono-acid or a di-acid, with an alcohol, a polyalcohol or a phenol.
The oxidation reaction is carried out by operating at temperatures between 40 and 100, depending on the nature of the anhydride to be obtained, the temperature having to be for example higher for the butyric anhydride than for the anhydride. acetic anhydride.
As catalysts, use will preferably be made of metal salts, in particular the salts of multi-valent metals (such as cobalt, nickel, copper, vanadium, etc.) and the acid corresponding to the anhydride to be obtained, these salts possibly being used alone or as a mixture at concentrations which may vary from 0.1 to 1% and preferably from 0.2 to 0.4% of the weight of the bath.
The oxidation gas can be air or oxygen mixed with inert gas; according to one embodiment of the invention, it is possible to take up a portion of the cooled gases after passing through the bath and reintroduce them into the latter mixed with fresh oxidation gas.
The Applicant has found - and this constitutes a peculiarity of the invention - that in the gases admitted into the oxidation apparatus, the partial pressure of oxygen must be, as far as possible, less than 76 mm. and preferably between 23 and 60 knots which, when working at atmospheric pressure, corresponding to oxygen contents of less than 10%, and preferably of between 3 and 8%. This prevents the formation of peroxides such as peracetic acid, which reduces the danger of explosion. In addition, higher yields are obtained because, the oxidation being less extensive, the proportion of secondary products resulting either from the decomposition of unstable peroxides, is reduced,
or direct oxidation of the raw material.
It has also been found that there is an advantage in maintaining the concentration of the aldehyde in the oxidation bath at a value less than 5%, without however being less than 0.3%. the aldehyde concentration will be maintained between 1 and 2% of the weight of the bath.
The gases and vapors escaping from the bath are preferably subjected to cooling to a temperature not substantially exceeding 15 ° C., the waste gas being returned to. the oxidizer The flow of gas in circulation is advantageously between −1 m 3 and 3 m 3 per liter of bath and preferably between 1.8 and 2.5 m 3.
It is possible to operate not only at atmospheric pressure but also at different pressures, both above and below ordinary pressure.
The invention can advantageously be carried out as follows and by operating in the apparatus whose diagram is attached to the following
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
description, without however this diagram being limiting
In the cylindrical vessel 1 provided with a suitable device for bringing the gases and liquids into contact, for example a porous plate, the aldehyde to be oxidized, for example ethanal, is fed through a pipe 2. The heat of reaction is removed by any device which can be for example an external refrigerant 4 in which circulates, by means of a pump 3, a part of the oxidation bath. A pipe 26 allows the introduction into the receptacle 1, of the diluent and catalysts.
The oxidation gases arrive through a pipe 13 and after having given up a part of their oxygen to carry out the oxidation escape through a pipe 5 entraining the products of the reaction of anhydride, acid and water, as well as a part of the ethananl having escaped the oxidation These gases pass successively in two condensers 6 and 7 cooled respectively with water and with brine. The major part of the vapors is condensed and separates from the waste gases in a separator 8 The separated liquid flows through a pipe 9 to a suitable separation system of the four components, not shown, which may for example be that which has been described by the Applicant in Belgian Patent No. 405,872 of October 25, 1934.
After separation of the liquids, the gases escape from the separator 8 through a pipe 10 and are divided into two parts; the most important goes, through a pipe 11, to a fan 12 from where it is returned to the oxidizer 1 by a pipe 13
The other part, representing the flush necessary to remove the nitrogen introduced at the same time as the oxygen and to maintain the correct proportion of oxygen in the circulating mixture, is sent through a pipe 14 to a washing column 15 with water spray. the upper part with a solvent which is advantageously identical to the diluent with which the oxidizer is initially filled. This solvent dissolves the ethanal, the acid and the anhydride which may remain in the gases after condensation and the gases, complete- completely freed of their vapors,
escape to the atmosphere- through- a- pipe 16 The washing liquid leaving- the column- is sent to a temperature exchanger 18 then- to a heater 19 and it enters a column 20. A the base of this column 20, is introduced, through a pipe 21, the fresh air intended to maintain the oxygen concentration of the gas mixture in circulation.
This air takes care of the products which the solvent had dissolved in column 15 and is returned through pipe 22 to the oxidation circuit, preferably in pipe 11.
The solvent freed from organic liquids leaves at the base of column 20 through a pipe 23 and, taken up by a pump 24, passes into exchanger 19 where it transfers its heat to the solvent entering column 20, then passes into a condenser. 25 which brings it to the temperature suitable for the washing operation and enters the washing column 15 through pipe 17.
The following non-limiting examples will make it possible to clearly understand how the invention should be carried out.
