On

IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE RECOVERY OF LOST HEAT IN
EXHAUST GAS FROM A THERMAL MACHINE.
We know the value of the production of steam by the exhaust gases of a reciprocating thermal machine or of a gas turbine, when it is desired to use this steam for reheating or for driving auxiliaries. of a motor device. However, the various methods of recovering the sensible heat lost in these exhaust gases only make it possible to produce a limited quantity of vapor. An increase in steam production is only possible by using an auxiliary boiler independent of the recuperator.
Finally, the timbre of the recovery boiler is necessarily low, limited by the. temperature by the temperature of the exhaust gases.
The combination of a thermal machine, reciprocating or gas turbine, and of a recuperative furnace using the exhaust gases as oxidizer, which is the object of the present invention, makes it possible to simply achieve high vapor production at a pressure independent of exhaust gas temperature. These gases are introduced into the furnace either through annular orifices surrounding the burners, or through annular orifices surrounding the burners, or through other orifices.
The above machine can be any: 4-stroke or 2-stroke diesel engine) gas turbine, furnace boiler. The essential feature of the invention is the cascading arrangement of two or more thermal appliances, one of which supplies the oxidant for the following, which appreciably improves the overall efficiency of the installation.
The description which will follow, with reference to the appended schematic drawings, given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented for the combination of simple machines chosen by way of example. The features which emerge, both from the drawing and from the text, are of course part of the invention.

The figure shows the combination of a diesel engine with a recovery boiler heated with liquid fuel. The boiler consists of a hearth with a direct heat exchange surface, followed by a vaporizing recuperator and one or more economizers which methodically exhaust the thermal energy of the gases.
We see in G the oxidizer gas generator (by way of example a diesel engine) and in F the recuperative furnace which is here a boiler with superheater S and economizer E.
An auxiliary fan V, isolated by means of a damper or of a flapping valve R, allows the use of the recuperator fireplace F when the engine G is stopped, the burner (s) then being supplied with air. In the event of discontinuous operation of the motor G or the recuperator F,. the exhaust gases can be diverted directly to the open air by means of a bypass B.
It has been found to be particularly advantageous, in the arrangement according to the present invention, to use a special distributor which ensures the correct combustion of widely varying amounts of fuel in a large amount of oxygen-poor oxidant gas without pressure drop. prohibitive. This distributor is the subject of another patent application filed the same day in the name of the same company.
The preceding example clearly shows the advantages of the invention. The cycle of the assembly formed by the heat engine and the exhaust gas boiler can be compared to the backpressure and re-superheat cycle in the case of of steam and has the same advantages as it.
This advantage lies in: 1) improving the efficiency of the installation by producing mechanical energy and recovering heat lost to the benefit of steam heating; 2) the dental possibility of varying the potential energy of the exhaust gases at will, raising their temperature to a value which allows their rational use; 3) The complete exhaustion of this potential energy in a perfectly adapted recuperator.
The benefit afforded by the combination can be particularly appreciable if it is possible to choose the most judicious distribution of this potential energy in the different operating cases of the installation.
Several variants can be envisaged, mainly concerning the source of oxidizing gas used:
1) Four-stroke diesel engine providing high temperature but relatively low oxygen exhaust gas.
2) Scavenging two-stroke diesel engine providing cooler exhaust gas, but rich in oxygen.
3) Gas turbine supplying gas at relatively high temperature and rich in oxygen.
4) Radiant boiler, in series with a recovery boiler, these two boilers being able to be at very different pressures.
5) Radiant superheater. This superheater is located in an auxiliary combustion chamber. The resulting combustion gases are then sent to the main combustion chamber. We
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
can thus achieve overheating very easily and without any danger for the holding of the superheater tubes.
6) Cascade heat treatment furnaces making it possible to use the sensible heat of gases,
