<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
6 et font à mouveau saillie (fig. 7D).

DEVICE APPLICABLE TO PRESSES: 4 PRINT TO OBTAIN A FEED =
UNINTERRUPTED TATION IN PRINTING SHEETS.
The present invention relates to a device applicable to printing presses for controlling the upward movement of stacks of sheets of paper to be printed.
Its object is to avoid, by simple and reliable means, any interruption in the feed during reloading of printed sheets and thus to obtain an appreciable saving of time.
According to the invention, this device is characterized in that there is placed on the lifting table a sheet designed so as to be able to slide with respect to vertical rods and to be brought into a position where it rests on supports. retractable members provided at the upper part of these rods and in that, after lowering the lifting table to its original position ;, a second sheet is placed on this table which receives another pile of leaves and which can cooperate with organs provided towards the bottom of the vertical rods so as to cause a low-amplitude upward sliding movement of these rods and the continuation of the rise of the first sheet until it is lifted directly by a new stack of leaves.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, these vertical rods move in fixed sheaths along which slide the support plates of the stack of sheets to be printed and they carry at their upper part a spring-loaded pawl comprising a branch or an almost horizontal surface (12) which can protrude from its rod and from the sheath tube and slide horizontally and which, after retraction ;, forms a support for the sheet supporting the sheets of paper to be further introduced into the machine after climbing the. sheet up to the level of these pawls.
Downwards, each vertical rod is provided with a housing for a pawl which is subjected to the inaction of a spring and which in the normal position projects on the periphery of the rod and of the sheath tube by a groove made in it. this.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
On the other hand, between the upper and lower pawls one can provide a device whose role is to trigger, under the effect of the sheet, the descent of the vertical rods having been locked during their lifting by the action of the sheet. on the lower pawls.
The accompanying drawings are intended to show in a purely illustrative manner how the device may be made in practice.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the entire device.
FIG. 2 is a view in elevation and partially in section of a vertical sheath on which the sheet slides.
FIG. 3 is an elevational view partially in section showing a fixed vertical sheath provided with a device for locking the rods with vertical sliding movement.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are detail views.
Figures 7A, 7B, 7C and 7D are schematic views for explaining the operation of the device.
In figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the support table receiving an upward or downward movement by the action of the screw 2 which is operated by means of bevel gears by means of a horizontal shaft (not shown).
This control of the horizontal shaft can be by crank or else automatic by known means in order to obtain an adequate rise of the support table according to the level of the upper sheet of the stack of paper and that by means of a ratchet actuating a ratchet wheel fixed to the horizontal shaft in these self-contained units and a rod and levers in conjunction with the top sheet level controller.
According to the invention, there is provided a sheet 3 which rests on the table 2 and on which the pile 4 of sheets to be printed is stacked. This sheet which participates in the upward movement of the table cooperates on two of its parallel sides with fixed tubes 5 arranged vertically and forming sheaths for the rods 6 which pass through the bars 7 in which they can perform a sliding movement of low amplitude.
The tubes 5 are fixed to the bars 7 and the latter are interconnected by flats 98, the assembly 7-8 thus constitutes a fixed frame integral with the press to be printed.
In their upper part, the rods 6 each carry a pawl 9 subjected to the action of a leaf spring 10 (fig.2) and housed in a recess 11 of the rod 6. This pawl is shaped so as to present upwards a face 12 which is slightly convex downwards from the inside towards the outside of the sheath 5 and protrudes with respect to the sheath 5 by virtue of a groove 13 formed therein.
The blade 10 is fixed by a screw 14.
Downwardly, each rod 6 is provided with a pawl 15 housed in a hollow 17 of the rod 6 and subjected to the action of a spring 16 fixed by a screw 161. This pawl 15 forms a downward branch. 18 almost horizontal projecting relative to the rod 6 and the sheath tube 5 by virtue of a groove 19 formed therein.
The -sheet 3 can slide along the tubes 5 and can be held against them thanks to the fact that along each of its sides coming into contact -with -: - these tubes -, - it has at least one guide 20 taking partially around a tube 5.
The sheet 3 by performing its upward movement will first exert a pressure on the face 18 of the pawls 15 which will have the effect of im, - primer on the rods 6 an upward movement until the moment when these pawls 15 s 'will gradually retract inwardly of the sheath tubes 5 as a result of the sliding of the edges 21 of the pawls 15 against the upper end 22 of the grooves 19.

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In order to reduce the friction to which the rubbing part of the branch 18 is subjected when slipping off, a small disc (not shown) for example 7 mm in diameter rotating around an axis carried by and housed in the ratchet 15.
Continuing its upward stroke, the sheet 3 will then push back by brushing against the upper pawls 9. These will first of all be pushed back -CI. inside the hollow 11 and will then be returned by the spring 10 to the position shown in FIG. 2 so as to constitute a support for the sheet 3.
Between the pawls 9 and -15 is provided on the sheath 5 a device whose role is to trigger under the effect of the sheet 3 the descent of the rods 6 having been locked during their lifting by the action of the sheet. 3 on face 18 of the pawls! 5
This device comprises (Figs. 3 and II 'a rod 23 running along the sheath 5 and connected upwardly to a tongue 24 which projects from the sheath 5 and which can oscillate about an axis 25 carried. by a part 26 projecting from the sheath 5 to which it is generally fixed by welding and having a hollow 261 in which the tongue 24 and the pin 25 are housed.
Downwards, the rod 23 forms a collar 27 which takes around a ball 28 housed in a conical hollow 29 of the cross member 7. This ball 28 can thus exert a braking action on the rod 6 but this braking can be eliminated. and the rod 6 released by Inaction of the sheet 3 on the tongue 24 which, by oscillating around the axis 25, causes the lifting and displacement in the direction of the arrow F of the rod 23.
To explain the operation of the device which is the subject of the invention, it will be assumed (FIG. 7A) that a sheet 3A has acted on the upper pawls 9 and that, after retraction of these, it has taken support on these pawls. and that after lowering the lifting table 1, another following 3 was placed on the table 1 so as to be immediately on the pawls.
The table 1 then resuming its automatic upward movement, the sheet 3 will act under the lower pawls 15 so as to produce the rise of the rods 0; these will cause by the pawls 9 the continuation of the rise of the sheet which was in 3A
This ensures that the machine continues to be fed with the aid of sheets shown at 41 (fig. 7A).
In the meantime, another stack 4 of sheets of paper will have been loaded on sheet 3 and this stacking will be done in such a way that the upper sheet is as close as possible to the lower face of the upper sheet. in 3B (fig.
7B) A stroke of the crank will then suffice to raise the table from position 31 (fig. 7B) which it has reached after the complete retraction of the pawls 15., in a sufficient Lesure (position 32) to establish contact between the upper sheet of stack 4 and the sheet occupying position 3B, a contact which will again ensure the direct mounting of the sheet located in 3B
After a slight upward movement of the upper sheet under the effect of the stack of sheets 4 acting on its lower face, this upper sheet will occupy the position 3C shown in FIG. 7C and as soon as the last sheet of the stack 41 has.
taken by the vacuum cleaners of the machine, this upper sheet can be removed and will in turn be used to stack the next stack after table 1 has in turn been brought back to its lowest point as soon as the lower sheet has exceeded the upper pawls 9.
During its rise, the lower sheet meets the tabs 24 and, as explained above, raises them (position 34 in fig. 7D). causing the release of the rods 6 and their fall in their original position under the effect of springs 46 while the pawls 15 come out of the sheath
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
6 and protrude (fig. 7D).
Above the face 12 of each pawl 9 and at a distance corresponding to the thickness of a sheet, each rod 6 can carry a tenon 32 projecting through the groove 13 of the sheath 5. Thanks to the presence of these tenons, the rods 6 will be able to continue their upward movement while maintaining the support of the sheet by the face 12 and the feeding will be able to continue normally in the event that the driver of the press does not proceed immediately to the descent of the support table 1 for the placement of the lower sheet.
It should be noted that thanks to the tolerance existing in the control mechanism of the level of the stack to be printed, the power supply of the machine can be maintained during the short interruption of the ascent of the support table 1 during the descent. of this table and the installation of the sheet under the pawls 15.
In order to attract the attention of the operator of the press at the moment when the reloading can take place, an electrical contact connected to a bell can be established when the retraction of one of the upper pawls 9 is almost complete.
Another electrical contact connected to a bell can be established by the upper sheet when it has almost reached the upper level of the stack of paper to warn the operator of the press that the time has come to remove it from it. .
Finally, a third contact may cooperate with the pawls 15 in order to warn that the time has come to give the crank to ensure the passage from position 321 to position 32 (FIG. 7B).
To facilitate the exact stacking of the sheets by lateral guides 35 (FIG. 5) integral with the press, it is possible for example to provide in the sheets 3 on the part facing the vacuum cleaners of the press a number of drawers 36 and each of which is retractable independently of the others. Depending on the width of the sheets, the retractable drawers will allow the passage of the side guides to the appropriate places.
These drawers will therefore be able to slide between an upper sheet element 37 and a lower sheet element 3.
Between these sheets 37 and 38 one can provide the lorg of the sides acting on the pawls 9 and 15 of the rods 40 (fig. 6) which can oscillate at 41 under the action of levers 42 provided with gripping members 43 connected by a spring 44.
If notches are provided at 45 on the edges of the elements 37 and 38, by bringing the rods 40 to 401, the movements of the lower plate 3 can be made independent of the pawls 15 and the table can thus be raised as soon as it is will have been loaded and allow it to act directly on the upper table without continuing to pass through the intermediary of the vertical sliding rods.
