<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

METHOD AND DEVICES FOR THE THERMAL TREATMENT OF HIGH-SPEED STEEL PARTS AND. ESPECIALLY OF TUNGSTEN HIGH-SPEED STEEL SAW RINGS
The subject of the invention is a process for the heat treatment of high speed steel parts and, in particular, a process capable of adequately hardening high speed steel saw segments.
The soaking of such parts poses very particular problems, firstly because of the nature of the ferrous alloy in question, and, secondly, because of the need to reserve areas in the part whose mechanical characteristics are different from those in other parts of the room.
The process, which is the subject of the invention, is characteristic in that it makes it possible to satisfy all the usual requirements, while treating high speed steels. It is known, in fact, that it is commonly used, in order to quickly bring a metal part to high temperature, of the medium by applying the effects of induction of a current at high frequency. For this purpose, the part to be treated is entirely or partially surrounded by one or more induction loops. The temperature of the room or part of a room rises very quickly. Nevertheless, it is currently considered by all specialists that the high frequency means is inapplicable to the heat treatment of high speed steels.
This opinion is generally justified on the pretext that this form of rapid heating of steel destroys its essential qualities. However, the Applicant has established, in the most formal manner, that high-speed steel parts can perfectly undergo heat treatment by extremely rapid rise to the quenching temperature by means of high frequency.
More particularly, the Applicant has been able to establish that saw segments made of high-speed tungsten steel can be favorably rapidly brought to the quenching temperature by means of the high frequency and it has been established that not only the quenched part had sufficient hardness and perfectly regular, but that the untreated part of the saw segment also retained all its own characteristics and that the separation between the treated and untreated parts was perfectly limited exactly as if it were of ordinary steel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The main object of the invention is therefore a process for the heat treatment of high-speed steels and more especially of saw segments made of high-speed tungsten steel and this process is essentially characterized in that the rapid heating of the part to temperature. quenching is caused by a high frequency current.
Another object of the invention consists of material means favorable to the localization of the heat treatment in the predetermined parts of the part, more especially of the saw segment, in order to guarantee, in the most complete way, the sharpness of the delimitation of the zones, respectively treated and untreated.
In a typical application, a saw segment will preferably be treated as described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: - Figure 1 shows, in front view, a high speed steel saw segment; FIG. 2 is a summary diagram, in elevation, of the relative position of the main elements involved during heating; FIG. 3 very schematically represents a vertical section through the device of FIG. 2; FIG. 4 shows schematically, in perspective view, a refrigerating support particularly suitable for the application of the process of the invention.
As shown diagrammatically, by way of example, in appended FIG. 1, a saw segment must have two zones of different hardnesses and these two zones delimited, in this case, by the dashed line AB, must have practically constant characteristics at least up to the proximity of said demarcation line AB. Indeed, zone 1 of lesser hardness .; respectively of greater malleability, comprises the rivet holes 2 and must offer good resistance to the stresses of the riveting tools. Also, the material in line with the rivets must satisfy the usual riveting conditions.
On the contrary, the zone 1 in which the saw teeth are cut must have a great hardness and this must be practically constant throughout the entire extent of this zone 3 in order to allow the qualities of the saw to be kept practically constant. after successive sharpening. Also, it is important to allow said successive sharpening operations to be repeated until the moment when the tooth bases practically reach the demarcation line AB, that is to say until near the peripheral edge of the disc forming the body. circular saw, but without cutting into it.
It is therefore essential, even if it is a high-speed steel part, that the heat treatment, respectively the quenching, be carried out under such conditions that zone 1 is practically protected from any heating capable of dangerously modify its texture, while zone 3 must be treated not only completely but also in a practically uniform manner.
To meet these different conditions, the saw segment S is, by its lower zone 1, trapped in a support or jaw 4 conditioned so as to promote the cooling of said zone 1.
This conditioning may result either from the choice of the material used for making the jaw 4, or from the profile allowing air cooling, or even from the circulation of a cooling fluid, for example water, or by any other means or any combination of several of these means.
The upper zone 1 protrudes from the underlying support 4 and is surrounded by at least one inductive loop 2 participating in an installation capable of producing a high-frequency current.
Under these conditions, it is obtained that zone 3 is rapidly brought to the quenching temperature, while lower zone 1 is kept relatively cold.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In the application shown schematically in FIGS. 2 and 3, the heating by high frequency induction of tungsten high speed steels will preferably be carried out in three distinct phases, respectively preheating, heating to the quenching temperature and stabilization. The part thus stabilized is then suddenly cooled in air, for example by blowing in pressurized air, or by any other known means.
The results obtained by the application of this process in the manufacture, in particular of saw segments, are practically perfect and meet, in any case, all the conditions required in the technique of manufacturing circular saws.
It is obviously possible to condition the installations capable of applying said process in very different forms, the parts being able to be treated one by one or in groups, the placement and removal of the heated parts being manual, semi-automatic or automatic and the different phases of the process being adjustable and controllable by visual or audible means.
The invention extends to these various devices specially packaged with a view to applying the method of the invention.
It is nevertheless essential to ensure sufficient cooling of the lower zone 1 of the room. This condition presents certain difficulties, both because of the heat conductivity of the steel and because of the proximity of the inducing loop (s) capable of inducing leakage flows in the support which develop eddy currents. To overcome this drawback and achieve systematic cooling, the underlying support will preferably consist of the juxtaposition of individual elements between which a dielectric is interposed, these elements being firmly secured to each other to form a single electrically compartmentalized support.
Such a characteristic arrangement is shown schematically in FIG. 4, in which the support or jaw is formed by the juxtaposition of hollow elements 6 of approximately triangular section applied against each other with the interposition of a thickness 7 in a manner. dielectric. These blocks are firmly attached to one another, for example by longitudinal rods 8 duly bolted. The shape of the blocks is such that after juxtaposition, the jaw has a longitudinal median groove whose dimensions are such that zone 1 of the part to be heated can be inserted into said groove by gentle friction and be there entirely or almost there. fully housed.
The hollow elements 6 are conditioned so as to form, by juxtaposition, a continuous or contraried channel having at least one inlet 10 and one outlet 11 for the cooling fluid. By this arrangement, it is obtained that zone 1 of the room to be heated is not only systematically fixed in the correct position, but that said zone 1 is above all ensured of sufficient cooling to maintain its position. sufficiently low temperature, as explained above. By the characteristic conformation of the support thus produced, it is obtained that the induction effect is considerably thwarted therein, in such a way that the heating by eddy current is negligible.
It can be seen in use that such a support remains practically at ambient temperature while zone 3 of the part to be treated is regularly and rapidly brought to the quenching temperature.
It will obviously be possible to substantially modify the shape and the packaging of the support thus described, while applying the characteristic of the invention relating thereto and which consists in producing it by judicious fragmentation with adequate interposition of insulating material.
Such a support is obviously capable of appreciably promoting the implementation of the method, the main object of the invention.
This process is applicable for any part, generally any high speed steels, and the particular support can be conformed in proportion to the parts to be treated, so that it can have all appropriate shapes and dimensions.
