<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

PROTECTIVE SHEATH OR WEAR CAP FOR SHOE SOLES
AND OTHERS SIMILAR.
A number of protectors have been proposed up to now for the protection of the soles of shoes, slippers, etc., among which may be mentioned: head nails and metal plates nailed to the soles; leather and rubber pads fixed in any way: gluing or nailing to the sole.
These different protectors all have their own or common faults or drawbacks. Nails and nailed metal plates deteriorate the leather of the soles and make walking noisy; leather and rubber pads, if nailed, also cause the sole to deteriorate rapidly. On the other hand, the placement of these protectors must, in order to be properly done, be carried out by a skilled and consequently expensive workforce.
The present invention relates to a protective sheath or wear cap, of economical manufacture, and which can be put in place by anyone without any difficulty, it also has the great advantage of not causing any deterioration. of the sole it protects.
It consists, in principle, of a base, in natural or synthetic rubber or in leather, taking the form of a normal sole and provided on its periphery, except along its rear part which ends in a whistle, with a welt rim, made in one piece with its rubber base
In the case where the base of the sheath is made of leather, it can receive a rubber rim, made integral with it by any process.
In a hollow bead, integral with the rim and located at the start of the welt, can be inserted a metal wire, a cord or textile lace which allows the tightening of the sheath after its placement, the ends of this element of tightening which can be, after tightening, immobilized in any way, for example, by a nail or a staple driven into the upper edge of the sole of the boot.
The inner surface of the base, as well as that of the rim, can be coated with a suitable adhesive to secure the liner or screed

by gluing on the sole that it must protect. The face of the sheath or screed intended to be in contact with the ground can be smooth or lined with any reliefs, ribs, grooves, grids, likely to increase its adhesion. Similarly, the flange 2 and the welt 3 can receive any reliefs .
This protective sheath or wear cap is designed in such a way that it fits the sole to be protected, that its rim surrounds and covers the edge of the sole and that the welt terminating its rim comes to rest on the edge. upper of the sole and against the upper of the shoe so as to ensure a perfect seal, on the one hand, between the sole and the upper and, on the other hand, between the sole and its yoke.
Two embodiments, given by way of non-limiting example, are shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a sole provided with a protective sheath.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal view of the sole of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a protective sheath.
Figure 4 is a partial and side perspective view of a leather base.
The protective sheath or wear cap 1, made of natural or synthetic rubber, provided with its rim 2 ending in the welt 3, fits the sole 4 to be protected and surrounds and covers the lateral edge 5 as well as the upper edge. of the latter so that the welt 3 engages against the rod 7 or in the space between the latter and the upper edge 6 of the sole 4.
The flange 2 and the welt 3 concern the periphery of the sheath 1, except, however, its rear end 12 ending in a whistle and intended to be fixed under the bridge formed between the sole and the heel of the shoe (see figo2) o
The active face 11 of the sheath, intended to come into contact with the ground, can be lined with reliefs intended to increase its grip on the ground. The inner face 10 of the sheath and the inner face of the flange 2 and the welt 3 are coated with a suitable adhesive, such as, for example, the adhesive commonly used in the manufacture of rubber patches intended for repair. air chambers.
Before placing the protective sheath, the outer surfaces of the sole to be protected are roughened by any usual and known means, so as to present an excellent bonding surface for the adhesive lining said sheath.
The fixing and tightening of the protective sheath can be reinforced by a metal wire, a cord or textile lace 8, inserted in a hollow bead 9, forming one unit with the flange 2 and located at the start of the welt 3. This element of tightening, suitably tensioned, ensures the maintenance of the sheath on the edge of the sole and its 8 'and 8 "ends can be immobilized by a nail or a staple planted in the upper edge of the sole.
In another embodiment, constituting a variant of that shown in Figures 1 to 3, the flange 2 and the welt 3 instead of having come in one piece with the base of the sheath 1, form in the case where the base is made of leather, a rubber assembly attached to said base and secured to it by any known and usual process.
FIG. 4 is a side view of a leather base provided with notches or holes 13 in which the rubber of which the rim and the welt is made will be forced during its vulcanization.
Other variant embodiments, in particular with regard to the materials used, the methods of securing the base of the sheath with its rim, are possible without departing either from the framework or from the scope.
