<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
1 - La capacité variable est formée par une arma- ture fixe et une armature rotative, les deux armatures compor- tant des décrochements, dans la direction de leur axe, en sens inverse l'un de l'autre, l'armature rotative étant dis- posée à l'extrémité d'un arbre de commande muni, à son autre extrémité d'un bouton de manoeuvre ;
2 - Sur la tige de l'armature rotative peut coulis- ser à frottement doux une douille qui est susceptible de se déplacer dans une cavité résonante, suivant son axe, ladite douille se vissant dans un trou taraudé de la carcasse de l'appareil et étant solidaire d'un manchon de manoeuvre;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Wide band wave meter.
The resonant cavity and circular vernier wavemeters currently in use are, in general, with a narrow frequency band. They are, in fact, constructed in such a way that the change in the variable capacitance cannot be very large, the maximum value of the latter not exceeding a value of the order of a few picofarads for the microwave range. In other words, the value of the capacitive change is limited, in these wave meters, by mechanical issues.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention, due to the work of Mr. Herbert François MATARE, relates to a wavemeter avoiding this drawback, that is to say a wavemeter whose variable capacity can be modified within wide limits and which can adapt to a range of quite large frequencies.
This wave meter has the following characteristics considered individually or in combination:
1 - The variable capacity is formed by a fixed armature and a rotating armature, the two armatures comprising setbacks, in the direction of their axis, in the opposite direction to each other, the rotating armature being arranged at the end of a control shaft fitted, at its other end, with an operating button;
2 - On the rod of the rotating armature can slide with gentle friction a bush which is capable of moving in a resonant cavity, along its axis, said bush being screwed into a tapped hole in the casing of the apparatus and being integral with an operating sleeve;
3 - The fixed armature of the capacitor is connected to a connection socket with the device supplying the frequency to be measured, while a detector placed in the resonant cavity is magnetically coupled to the internal field, said detector being, at the output , connected to an element of interchangeable capacity of which the other element is grounded.
Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become apparent during the description which follows and on examination of the appended drawing in which there is shown, diagrammatically and by way of example only, an embodiment of the invention. present invention.

On this drawing :
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a wavemeter established in accordance with the invention,
And Figure 2 is a top plan view.
As seen in this drawing, the wavemeter shown comprises a resonant cavity 1 on the bottom plate 2 of which is fixed, by means of an insulating washer 3 (in trolitul for example), an armature 4 forming a capacity with another movable armature 5 disposed at the end of a rotary control shaft 6. The latter is provided at its upper part with an operating button 7 carrying an index 8 capable of moving in front of a circular scale. The upper part of the shaft 6 is mounted in a sleeve 10 integral with a bracket 11 on which the scale 9 is fixed and which is itself fixed to the upper plate 12 of the resonant cavity.
The two reinforcements 4 and 5 comprise, as can be seen in FIG. 1, two vertical recesses .13 and 14 in the opposite direction, which makes it possible to vary the capacitance circularly between certain limits.
The fixed armature 4 is connected to a socket 15 making it possible to connect the device whose frequency is to be measured.
Inside the resonant cavity 1 is placed a detector 16 which is magnetically coupled to the internal field by pressing, at one end, against a spring 17 fixed, for example, to the upper plate 12 of the resonant cavity.
At the output, the detector 16 is connected to a capacitance element 18 mounted between two insulating washers 19 and 20, (in trolitul for example} inside a sleeve 21 forming the autosampler.

be element of the capacitor, this element being earthed by a part 22 which screws onto the sleeve 21 and which forms part of a socket, the other part of which is shown at 23, The socket 22-23 makes it possible to wire the measuring instrument.
The capacity element 18 is removable so that it can be replaced by another element of different diameter in order to modify the. capacity.
On the shaft 6 of the rotary armature 5 can slide with greasy friction a sleeve 24 which is screwed into a threaded sleeve 25 secured to the upper plate 12 of the resonant cavity 1. The sleeve 24 is secured to a sleeve. operating mechanism 26, the bevelled lower edge of which may include a mark moving in front of a graduation carried by the sleeve 25.
To modify the initial capacity, the button 7 is operated, the rotation of which drives that of the shaft 6 and of the mobile armature 5, which varies the capacity from a minimum value (corresponding to the position shown in FIG. 1). up to, a maximum value corresponding to a rotation of 1800 of the movable armature 5. The wide limits of pos- sibility of adjustment of the wavemeter are obtained by the maneuver of the machon 26 thanks to which it is possible to make up and down the socket 24 to adapt the resonant volume to the limiting conditions of use of the device.
The scale 9 can be graduated, after calibration, either in wavelengths for a given detector, or in angles.
In the latter case, reference can be made to correspondence tables in order to obtain the wavelength according to the various types of detectors used.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
It can be seen from the foregoing that the wavemeter described above constitutes a high precision measuring device which can be used for a wide band of frequencies.
This same device could also be used for receiving high frequency signals by means of the socket 15, the low frequency being collected by means of the socket 22-23.
Of course, modifications could be made in the construction details of the wavemeter described above and shown, without the general economy of the invention being thereby affected.
