"Further development of diaphragm valves'
The present invention relates to diaphragm valves for controlling fluids, particularly of the type in which the valve body has a right through bore (thus allowing it to be traversed by a rod). In the closed position of the valve, the diaphragm is pressed against a seat occupying the entire cross section of the valve body from one side to the other of the tight edge of the diaphragm by a control member of corresponding shape.
In the open position the control member is withdrawn out of the recessed space of the valve, causing the diaphragm, to which it is attached at @

away from the seat. according to the present invention, a valve of the type indicated above comprises a substantially straight alidade, a substantially circular section dt having a conical seat, the axis is perpendicular to the bore and it tapers, from a circular opening uans the wall of this bore to connect tangentially to a spnérque surface of the same radius of curvature as the bore ae the valve and concentric with the latter.
It is understood that the term "conical" used here is not limited to a surface of revolution produced by a rectilinear generator, but should include any flared shape allowing the actuator and the diaphragm to perform the movements. necessary without hindrance. The invention offers the advantage of distributing the closing pressure over a large area while retaining the advantages of a straight through bore and diaphragm. The invention also enables the clamping surface of the diaphragm edge to be accommodated laterally beyond a side of the valve bore only at a distance corresponding to the thickness of the metal required for the wall of the valve. ale- ment, thus keeping the height of the valve to a minimum,
without reducing the height of the bore substantially below the diameter of the complete circular section. The bottom of the bore can also be quite straight, and in cross section through the axis of the seat, the dimensions of the latter are connected tangentially to the circular cross section of the bore, thus maintaining cross section to a minimum without encroaching on the complete circular section of the valve. Another advantage of this seat slot is the reduction in flexion of the diaphragm during opening and closing the valve. what pro-

in its central part and tapers towards the edges.
In the open position of the valve, the peripheral, unblocked portion of the diaphragm preferably has an annular bulge having its convex side facing towards the head of the valve. The use of a diapnragm which tapers towards the periphery helps to ensure the formation of such a bulge from the start of the opening movement. These peculiarities also help to reduce the flexion of the diaphragm, and hence to prolong its service life.
A preferred embodiment of the invention has been described below in more detail, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which FIG. 1 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line A-B of FIG. 3, with the valve in the closed position; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the valve in the open position; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken along line C-D of FIG. 1, and FIG. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line A-C of FIG. 3, with the valve in the open position.
As shown in the drawing, the body of the valve has a bore 12 of circular cross section at its ends and having a straight bottom 13, while the top 14 can have a very slight slope going from the edges 15 and 16 provided with flanges ( thus slightly reducing the circular section, without however modifying it appreciably) towards a circular orifice 10 in the wall of the bore of the valve which is bordered by a flange 17, on which rests, with interposition at the edge of the diaphragm 18, the bottom flange 19 of the head of the valve 21. The flanges of the

The head of the valve comprises a valve stem 23 emerging from this head was sufficient to be fitted with the usual frying pans 24. inside the head, the valve stem has a shoulder 25, a ball stop 26 being interposed. between this shoulder and the top of the head, so that the valve stem can pivot, without however being able to move axially. The other end of the rod is threaded and is engaged in a nut 27 provided with a shoulder and which in turn is prevented from rotating by fitting into a guide groove 28 cut in the transverse direction, in the end of the central tubular part 29 of a conical control member 31.
The section of the groove 28 is provided in such a way that it prevents the nut 27 from pivoting or moving longitudinally relative to the actuator, but leaves the actuator free to move. center itself. The actuator has a central recess 32 to accommodate the threaded portion of the valve stem therein when the valve is open. The control member 31 is flat at its narrow end 33 in order to fix there, more easily, the center of the diaphragm by means of a screw 34 whose head is molded and vulcanized in the diaphragm, the latter preferably being reinforced in its center, as indicated at 35. The diaphragm is molded into a shape corresponding to the closed position of the valve.
It is thicker at its center, fixed to the actuator, and decreases slightly in thickness towards its edge, which is clamped between the body and the head of the valve.
The bore of the valve has a conical seat 36 of shape corresponding to the control organ 31 of

spherical 40, of the same curvature as and concentric with the bore of the valve. The depth of this seat is clearly illustrated in cross section in Figures 1 and 4.
At the points of intersection of the conical seat and the valve cylinder bore (indicated at 37 in Fig. 2) the surfaces are rounded to avoid sharp edges at the limits of the central region. of the diaphragm. With these forms of seat and the control member, when opening and closing the valve, the maximum flexion of the diaphragm near its tight edge is obtained while its central portion remains in contact with the valve. control device (Figs. 2 and 4). In the open position, the loose peripheral part of the diaphragm thus exhibits an annular bulge 38 rotating its convex side towards the head.
On the side facing the control member, the diaphragm may be provided with ribs 39, the latter improving the tightness of the closure without thereby stiffening the diaphragm. The interior of the valve head is provided with ribs 41 terminating in curved surfaces 42 helping to hold the annular bulge of the diaphragm in the open position, and capable of engaging the mortises 44 of the diaphragm. control organ to prevent rotation (the latter.
Thus, there may be four ribs 41 and four mortises 44, disposed at an angle of 45 to the main axis of the valve, and the actuator may have fingers 43 extending upwardly from. the conical part of the control member and all along the central tuoulaire part 29 of each side of two diametrically opposed pervures 41, the groove 28 for the nut 27 being at right angles to these fingers 43.
