<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Automatic control device for clamshells.
Mr. Pierre Jean Marie Théodore ALLARD French patent application - in favor of April 30, 1948 The invention relates to automatic skips of the type in which the closing and opening movements are provided by the same cable (s), the opening being triggered by the action of a pull tab or stop or by placing the bucket on the ground.
This device is remarkable in particular in that the drum on which the lifting sand is wound is mounted idle on the control shaft for the movements of the shells and is connected to it by means of a ratchet wheel cooperating with clicks carried by said drum and carrying dogs bearing on other dogs carried by a plate slidably mounted on said control shaft and which can be moved along this shaft by a nut integral with a lever carrying a counterweight acting in the forward direction the two series of dogs out of grip.
Thanks to this arrangement, closing is ensured by bringing the gentle series of dogs into engagement and by pulling the control shaft on the lifting cable.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and the opening is ensured by bringing the dogs out of engagement either by acting on the nut by a trigger device, the traction exerted by the weight of the bucket on the lifting or closing cable then passing from the drum. closure to a suitable opening device, and the bucket, going down by its own weight, causing by means of this suitable device, the opening of the shells, either by resting the bucket on the ground and giving slack to the cable ,
to allow the counterweight to release the dogs, then by exerting traction on the cable, which by means of the same suitable device, ensures the opening of the shells.
On the other hand, a device is preferably provided for accumulating a certain energy during the unwinding of the lifting cable, this device serving simultaneously to slow down the opening movement and, by then releasing the energy which it has stored, to cause ? the winding of the lifting cable.
Other characteristics and advantages will result from the description which follows.
In the accompanying drawings
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a bucket provided with the device of the invention along line 1-1 of FIG. 2; Fig. 2 is a plan view with partial sections corresponding to FIG. 1; Figs. 3 and 4 are partial schematic views showing the operation of the opening control lever.
The device according to the invention is, as shown in the drawing, preferably applied to a control mechanism as described in the patent application in France.

filed by the applicant on February 11, 1948 for "Control mechanism for automatic skip" and which comprises at least one central box on which the two shells are articulated and supporting an oscillating toothed sector in engagement with a pinion linked to the control member shells and connected to the axes of rotation of the shells by a system of connecting rods coupled at two eccentric points of the sector.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the lifting and closing target and 3 the ends of the two shells articulated on two parallel casings 4 joined by two transverse tubes 5 in which the ends of the shafts 6 of the shells pivot. This closing cable 1 is wound on a large diameter drum 12 mounted loosely on a shaft 13 journaled at its two ends in the housings 4 and carrying in each housing a pinion 14 engaged with a toothed sector 15 formed inside. a circular groove 16 formed in a sector, 17 oscillating on an axis 18 carried by the housing 4.
At two points of the sector 17 eccentric and opposite with respect to the axis 18 are mounted two axes 20 on which are articulated two connecting rods 21, the other ends of which are articulated on axes 22 carried by the crankpins 23 integral with the axes 6.
We see that a rotation of the shaft 13 and the pinion 14 in the direction! corresponding to the unwinding of the cable 1 causes an oscillation of the sector 17 in the direction F and, by means of the connecting rods 21 and cranks 23, the closing of the shells 3.
The connection between the drum 12 and the shaft 13 is made as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The drum 12 internally carries one or more pawls 30 (Fig. 4) cooperating with a ratchet wheel 31 shown free on the shaft 13 and provided laterally with dogs 32 which can engage with corresponding dogs 33 carried by a plate 34 mounted. on the shaft 13 by means of a key 35 so as to be integral with said rotating shaft and to be able to slide on it. The plate 34 comprises an annular groove 36 into which penetrates a corresponding annular spout 37 formed in a nut 58 engaged with a threaded sleeve 39 threaded onto the shaft 13 and fixed to the wall of one of the casings 4.
In the position of FIG. 2, the dogs 32 and 33 being in prie, the drum 12 and the wheel 31 are made integral in rotation with the shaft 13 in the direction! by means of the pawls 30 of the plate 34 and of the key 35. If, by means of the nut 38, the plate 34 is moved in the direction f1 in order to bring the dogs 32 and 33 out of engagement, the drum 12 and the wheel 31 are then released relative to the shaft 13.
The nut 38 is integral on the one hand with a lever 40 carrying a counterweight 41 constantly tending to rotate the nut 38 in the direction f2 (see Fig. 4), that is to say to move it in the direction f1 and on the other hand a second lever 42 at the end of which is hooked a cable 43 on which a traction can be exerted by hand to also rotate the nut 38 in the direction f2.
The opening of the shells 3 is ensured as follows:
On an axis 44 carried by one of the casings 4 is articulated a lever 45 having at its end an orifice 46 for the passage of the cable 1 and integral, around the axis 44, with a crank 47 forming an elbow with the lever 45.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
On the other end of the crank 47 is articulated a connecting rod 48, moreover connected to a pin 49 carried eccentrically by the sector 17 so that a rotation of the lever 45 in the direction F1 (see FIG. 1) causes an oscillation of the sector 17 in the opposite direction of F, that is to say in the direction causing, by means of the connecting rods 21 and cranks 23, the opening of the shells 3.
The rotation of the lever 45 is ensured by means of a spherical stop 50 integral with the cable 1 and fixed to it in a position such that it is on the drum 12 throughout the part of the unwinding of the cable 1 corresponding to the closing movement. and -that it is at the exit point of the cable 1 relative to the drum 12 at the start of the opening movement. The system constituted by the connecting rod 48, the crank 47 and the lever 45 is arranged on the other hand so that at the closed position of the shells 3, the end of the lever 45 through which the cable 1 passes is located in the vicinity the sand exit point 1, the lever 45 thus being lifted by the stop 50 as soon as the latter arrives at this exit point.
The lever 45 is connected to the counterweight 41 by a chain or other suitable device such as a sliding rod 51 (Figs. S and 4) of length such that when the bucket is open the lever 45 lifts the counterweight 41 and causes a rotation of the nut 38 in the opposite direction of f2 and brings the dogs 33 back into engagement with the dogs 58 to again secure the drum 12 and the shaft 13.
On the wall of the drum 12 is fixed as an extension a second drum 52 suai of a helical groove and on which can be wound, in the opposite direction of the cable 1, a target 53, one end of which is fixed on this drum 52, which passes on a pulley 54 idle mounted on an axis 55
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
carried by the housings 4 and the other end of which is hooked to the rod 56 of a piston 57. The piston 57 slides in a sealed cylinder 58 fixed to the gimbal 4 and containing air, the airtight seal being obtained by means of a free piston 59 and a chamber 60 between the pistons 57 and 59 into which a liquid such as oil has been introduced.
On the cylindrical end 61 of the drum 52 is wound in the opposite direction of the cable 53 a small sand 62, one end of which is fixed on the drum 52 and the other at a fixed point 63 of the housing 4.
The operation is as follows
The bucket being open, the cable 1 wound on the drum 12 and the dogs 32 and 33 engaged, traction is exerted on the sand 1 which unwinds by driving the shaft
13 in the direction f via the drum 12, the pawls 30, the wheel 31, the dogs 32 and 33 and the plate
34. Sector 17, then driven by pinion 14, oscillates along F causing the shells to close. During this movement the stop 50 is brought to the position shown in FIG. 1 and the cable 53 is slightly wound up on the drum 52 causing a first compression of the air contained in the cylinder 53 and ensuring the braking of the end-of-closing movement while avoiding the impact of the shells.
To cause the opening of the bucket, traction is exerted on the target 43, the nut 38 turns "along f2, the plate 34 moves away from the wheel 31 and the dogs 32 and
33 are then disengaged, the bucket being thus released relative to the sand 1. It therefore descends by its own weight causing the unwinding of the cable 1, the drum
12 crazy turning on the shaft 13. In this unwinding of the cable
1 the stop 50 caused the tilting of the lever-45 in the direction F1 and, by the crank 47 and the connecting rod 48, the oscillation
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
sector 17 in the opposite direction of F, giving the opening of the shells 3.
The same result can be obtained by weighing the bucket on the ground, instead of acting on the sand 43. In this case indeed
EMI7.1
the cable 1 takes man, no pressure is no longer exerted on the jaws Z2 and 33 and the counterweight 41 can swing freely downwards by turning the nut 38 according to ± 2 and releasing the jaws 38 and 35. It It is then sufficient to shoot again on the target to ensure the tilting of the lever 45 along F1 and the opening of the shells.
During the unwinding of the cable 1 corresponding to
EMI7.2
the opening of the bucket, the drum 52 has rotated along f and causes the winding of the target 5z therefore 1 & setting up the complete air pressure of the cylinder 58 thus ensuring the braking of the opening movement.
At the end of opening the lever 45 drives, by
EMI7.3
chain 5le lifted it from the counterweight 41 so the rotation of the nut 38 in the opposite direction of f2 and the re-engagement of the dogs 32 and 33. 41>, amboar 12 is again secured to the shaft 13 in the direction of unwinding sand 1.
We then bring the dumpster back to the ground and give
EMI7.4
slack in the cable 1 the compressed air in the cylinder 58 expands by pulling on the cable 53 which causes the rotation of the drum 12 in the opposite direction of f and the winding of the part of the target 1 which had unwound. This last movement takes place without any action on the shaft 13 and the sector 17 because, in this direction of rotation, the drum 12 freely rotates the pawl 30 jumping on the teeth of the wheel 31.
This latter movement is also limited by the winding of the small cable 62 which thus ensures the resetting.
EMI7.5
place the various organs exastemsnt in the starting position, the sand 1 not being able to roll up, thanks to this
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
provision, that of a length identical to that of which it took place during operation.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment shown and described which was chosen only by way of example.
Thus, as we have seen in the course of the description, the lever 42 and the target 43 are not necessary since the triggering of the opening movement can be ensured, under the action of the counterweight 41, by placing the bucket and giving slack to the cable 1. On the other hand, the cable 43 could be replaced by a stop acting at the desired moment on the end of the lever 42.
