APPAREIL POUR LA TRANSFORMATION D'UN COMBUSTIBLE CARBONE
SOLIDE FINEMENT DIVISE EN GAZ COMBUSTIBLES
La présente invention est relative, d'une façon générale, à un appareil servant à transformer un combusti- ble carboné solide en gaz combustibles par un procédé com- prenant l'oxydation partielle du carbone de ce combustible par de l'oxygène;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

APPARATUS FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF A CARBON FUEL
SOLID, FINELY DIVIDED INTO COMBUSTIBLE GASES
The present invention relates, in general, to an apparatus for converting a solid carbonaceous fuel into combustible gases by a process comprising the partial oxidation of the carbon of this fuel by oxygen;
it aims more specifically at the creation of an apparatus which can be used to carry out this process and to collect the gas produced, an apparatus with which the risks of explosion are considerably reduced, in particular in those of its applications in which the finely divided solid fuel is first suspended in oxygen, oxygen-enriched air or in the air itself, after which the suspension thus formed is introduced continuously in

the preheated gasification apparatus, this introduction taking place in the form of a stream or a jet,
in order to continuously provoke the reaction
EMI2.1
The present improvement in gasification apparatus is also useful in carrying out a process whereby the finely divided solid fuel is not only reacted with oxygen gas in which it is suspended. , but also mi. in reaction with fluid oxides such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, capable of reacting endothermically with hot carbon to gasify it and transform it into combustible gas.
In a related application filed today by the Applicant entitled "Apparatus for the Continuous Production of Fuel Gases", an improved process for the continuous gasification of a finely divided solid carbonaceous fuel has been described. continuously introducing into a previously heated gasification chamber a jet of finely divided solid fuel suspended in oxygen, or in oxygen-enriched air, this jet being completely surrounded by an envelope formed by a fluid oxide such as carbon dioxide, o.
water vapor, capable of reacting endothermically with the hot carbon of this jet, in order to produce a combustible gas, this envelope of fluid oxide flowing substantially concurrently with the components of the jet between the latter and the walls of the gasification chamber. The use of this process makes it possible to transform any solid carbonaceous fuel, for example coal, lignite, peat, etc., into a gaseous fuel mixture, provided that it is sufficiently finely divided. that is to say that a

less than half of the solid fuel is reduced to grains less than 0.05 mm in size, the largest grain size not to exceed 0.8 mm.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide improvements whereby, in gasification apparatus operating according to a process consisting in taking a suspension of finely divided solid fuel in oxygen , or in oxygen-enriched air, and to introduce it into a hot reaction and gasification apparatus, while simultaneously extracting the combustible gas mixture formed by the reaction of these elements in the same reaction apparatus, this process can be carried out safely and without risk of explosion if it happens that, for some reason, the oxygen constituting an element of the suspension continues to be introduced into the reaction and reaction apparatus. gasification in the absence of solid fuel,
or when the solid fuel is not suitable for reacting with oxygen to form a fuel gas, so that it becomes mixed in auxiliary apparatus such as scrubbers or gasometers, for example, with previously formed combustible gas, and thus gives rise to the risk of explosion.
The object of the invention is also to provide other advantages and to create other improvements or to produce other results which may be obtained by the methods or with the apparatus which will be described later.
According to the present invention, an apparatus system for the gasification of a finely divided solid carbonaceous fuel suspended in oxygen, or in oxygen-enriched air, comprises several reaction apparatus. gasification and gasification spaced at
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
very and communicating with a common chamber in which the non-gasified residue of the solid fuel used can be deposited by separating from the gas produced, and in which the gasification reaction itself can be prolonged, each of these reaction apparatus being provided a device or a group of devices making it possible to inject continuously and simultaneously into these reaction and gasification apparatus several streams or jets of the suspension of solid fuel and oxygen,
in order to gasify the roof. tible solid by means of oxygen when the reaction space is hot, each of these devices being combined with its own mixing mechanism to previously form a suspension of solid fuel in oxygen, and each of these mixing devices being also provided with its own feed means operating independently for the introduction, into this device, of finely divided solid fuel.
By causing the fuel gases arriving at several reaction and gasification apparatus to be mixed in the common chamber of these apparatuses, while they are at an elevated temperature, the result is obtained that all oxygen jets in question which may have escaped the reaction with solid finely divided fuel is burned by combustible gas produced by other jets, which eliminates any risk of the formation of explosive mixtures in devices or equipment - auxiliary elements, such as scrubbers or gasifiers, used to treat or conserve the combustible gas, after it has left the collecting chamber common to the various reaction devices.
The accompanying drawing, which forms an integral part of the present description, shows, by way of example, a preferred apparatus and method for the practice of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the invention, but it is understood that the invention is not limited to the single example shown.
Referring to the drawing, the vent apparatus system for the gasification of suspensions of finely divided solid fuel in an oxidizing atmosphere comprises four frustoconical reaction and gasification apparatuses 1, 2, 3, 4 arranged symmetrically with respect to each other. to the vertical axis of the room with which they communicate; the chamber 1 serves to effect the mixing of the fuel gas produced in these four reaction apparatuses, and it can also be used to allow a part of the non-gasified residue of solid fuel used to settle there. The combustible gas produced leaves the chamber 5 through the outlet orifice 6 of this chamber. The lower part of chamber 1 is preferably provided with outlet means (not shown) for the extraction of the solid residue from the gasification reaction.
As shown in the drawing, each of these reaction and gasification apparatus is provided, at its outer end, with one or more nozzles 5a each communicating individually with a pipe 7a; these nozzles and pipes serve to deliver and introduce into the individual reaction and gasification devices 1, 2, 3 4 the suspension previously formed of solid fuel in oxygen, or in oxygen-enriched air . The number of nozzles with which each reaction and gasification apparatus is fitted is optional; in the apparatus shown in the drawing, the reaction and gasification apparatus 1 is provided with two nozzles; ± reaction apparatus and each have three nozzles, while the .4 reaction apparatus has only one such nozzle.
Each nozzle 5a communicates by a pipe 7a with
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
a mixing or injection device 2 in which 1 '. xygen or oxygen-enriched air which is delivered into this mixing device under relative pressure, from a tank and through a connecting pipe 8, is mixed with finely divided solid fuel distributed positively in the mixing device 7, by means of a ± conveyor which is preferably of the Archimedean screw type.
The oxygen delivered to each mixing device 2 entrains the finely divided fuel distributed by the screw conveyor of this device, and the resulting suspension leaves the mixing device and enters under pressure in a pipe 7a which sends it. in a reaction and gasification apparatus combined with this device. Each carrier 2 is arranged so as to function. independently and is operated by an individual drive mechanism 10 to which it is connected.
The finely divided solid fuel can be stored in bunkers (not shown in the drawing) communicating with the carriers .2 by their individual hoppers 11, through which the solid fuel can be delivered individually and directly to a conveyor 9 .
It is also advantageous to provide suitable means for correlating the movements of a valve (not shown) regulating the flow of oxygen in a connecting pipe 8, with those of the drive mechanism 10 of the corresponding conveyor 9. , such that the arrival of oxygen in the mixing device 7 is stopped when this drive mechanism is itself stopped.
The mixing devices 2 are preferably each constructed so that when the finely divided soil fuel is dispensed out of the conveyor
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
corresponding 9, the oxygen stream exiting at the distribution end of the connecting pipes 8 comes directly into contact with the solid fuel reduced to fine powder and mixes intimately with this fuel to form a homogeneous suspension of this fuel in the stream oxygen, this suspension then being injected, through pipe 7a, as a result of the oxygen velocity, directly through nozzle 5a, into a reaction and gasification apparatus.
The pipes 7a, the mixing devices 2 and the nozzles 5a are preferably made as short as possible, and their diameter is such that the flow rate of the solid fuel suspension in these pipes. and nozzles is much greater than the rate of propagation of the flame in the mixture of oxygen and combustion. tible, in order to avoid any "flashback" in the nozzles 5a or in the distribution pipes 7a
By means of the apparatus system described above which serves to produce fuel gas in particular from finely divided solid fuel suspended in oxygen, or in oxygen-enriched air,
any possibility of the formation of explosive mixtures of oxygen and fuel gas in the gasification apparatus itself or in auxiliary apparatus used for subsequent treatment of the fuel gas is effectively prevented.
It is thus, for example, that if the distribution of fuel finely divided by one or even more conveyors in the corresponding mixing device 2 is intercompressed for some reason, and if oxygen continues to enter the mixing device, then in the reaction and gasification apparatus, the solid fuel suspension continues to be injected through the other nozzles 5a of the apparatus system and to be gasified, the oxygen being distributed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
steamed in the reaction and gasification apparatus without the corresponding solid fuel intended to be suspended, reacting either with solid fuel leaving the other mixing devices or on combustible gas already produced,
to form more carbon dioxide than would otherwise be the case. This will naturally momentarily lead to a considerable change in the composition of the fuel gas produced, part of the solid fuel also escaping gasification, and the calorific value of the gas produced may even drop to zero. However, any significant change in the calorific value of the gas produced can be made automatically visible to the operator by a suitable control device, and corrective action can be taken quickly.
The invention described above is applied in a particular form and in a particular way, but it can also be applied in various other ways without going beyond its scope.
