<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Si
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Improvements made or relating to fluid clutches; magnetic".
This invention relates to electromagnetically controlled torque transmission systems, and more specifically to a device or system for forming a forced transmission or connection between two units which can rotate independently, said system having among other things the purpose of: providing a transmission between said elements which is controllable sliding and without wear.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple system which can be activated to serve as either a clutch or a brake by applying a magnetic field which can be activated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
controlled by a remote power source.
Another object of the invention is to provide an electromagnetically controlled clutch or brake, the parts of which undergo practically no wear, capable of locking with great force two rotating elements capable of moving relative to one another. to the other and offering advantages over clutches or conventional eddy current brakes, including the possibility of locking with practically maximum torque, even at the lowest (or zero) relative speed; perfectly smooth, chatter-free operation when there is relative movement between the rotating elements and virtually constant torque at all sliding speeds over a wide range.
The disclosed clutch has the same advantages over friction clutches, including virtually no parts subject to wear, simplicity and inexpensive construction, and simple electrical control from a remote point.
Other advantages of the advanced clutch include very rapid response to rapid changes in drive current; operation requiring only a low-voltage source of electric power such as that which can be provided by an accumulator battery, and the possibility of operating either with alternating current or with direct current.
In view of the aforementioned and other purposes the invention is a method of transmitting motion from one element to another and closely spaced neighbor comprising maintaining a mass of distinct and relatively spatially mobile paramagnetic particles. included between said elements, and the fact of subjecting said elements and particles to a magnetic field.
Accordingly, the invention also consists of a system
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
for transmitting torque between rotating parts comprising a rotating element, a paramagnetic part fixed to the first element to rotate with it, a second rotating element, independent, practically coaxial with said first element, a second paramagnetic part fixed to the latter to rotate with it, said parts or elements having large surfaces of revolution opposite one another and slightly spaced apart, a mass of distinct paramagnetic particles in the space comprised between said opposed surfaces and means for producing - reduce a magnetic field between said surfaces.
In order to be able to clearly understand said invention and to carry it out easily, it will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic axial cross section of a device illustrating the principles of the invention. 'invention.

The invention is based on the fact that if two slightly spaced paramagnetic material surfaces are joined by a fluid containing a large number of finely divided paramagnetic particles, such as soft iron particles, and a magnetic field is applied between the two surfaces, they will tend to block so as to transmit a transverse movement between them as long as the magnetic field remains.
This principle is applied to Figure 1 in which two independently rotating shafts 1 and 2 are mounted to rotate in suitable bearings or bushes (not shown). To the upper axis 1 is attached a disc 3, while to the lower axis 2 is attached a box 4 containing a magnetic fluid mixture consisting of a suitable carrier fluid and a quantity of finely divided paramagnetic particles such as, for example , soft iron dust commercially sold by the "General Aniline and Film Company of New York as" Carbonyl Iron Powders "which has been found to have an E grade, 8 micron in average size.
The percentage of dust can vary within fairly wide limits, but it has been found, according to the invention, that a mixture containing about 60% by volume of dust gives satisfactory results. An xx coil or field winding 6 is placed as shown in the figure so that when the coil is excited by an electric current, it produces a magnetic flux in the space between plates 3 and 4, as shown in the arrows.
It is understood that in practice, this space will have a dimension such that it provides the shortest return path for the flux, for example by making the axis 1 in non-magnetic material or, otherwise, by making the sec- tion 5 in non-magnetic material, or by designing another
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the magnetic circuit for efficient operation, according to known good practice. Although the clutch can operate without carrier fluid using only the iron particles, it has been found that operation is greatly improved by using a fluid mixed with the iron particles.
It has been found according to the invention that a light lubricating oil is suitable for this purpose, but, in general, any liquid having suitable mechanical properties can be used to cause the mixture to act as a fluid. rather viscous at all intended operating temperatures.
The non-magnetic housing 5 which carries the rings, is shown schematically as enclosing a bearing for the end of the box 4 which surrounds the shaft 1, and a packing 10 is shown schematically to retain the magnetic fluid. boot 4 and move it away from the bearing. It is evident, however, that these details can vary widely depending on the requirements of the particular model employed and in accordance with the principles of good design and mechanical practice.
A battery 7 is shown to supply current to the field winding or coil 6, and this current can be controlled by means of the rheostat 9 and supplied to the coil 6 by means of the brushes 11 and the rings 12 to which are attached. the conductors 13 and 14 respectively, which terminate at the terminals of the coil.
When the coil is energized, it can be seen that there is a large coupling force between the two axes 1 and 2. For example; if axis 1 is driven and rotates and the magnet is not energized, axis 2 will remain stationary. If we gradually increase the current in coil 6, a determined torque will develop slowly between the two parts 3 and 4, the value of which, all of them being equal, will depend on the current in coil 6. If
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the torque developed in the clutch is greater than that required by the load on axis 2, the two parts 3 and 4 will be "locked" together and they will turn at the same speed. It is a characteristic of the invention that the driven axis reaches its maximum speed very slowly and without grazing.
If the maximum torque that the clutch can develop (due to its limited physical and electrical parameters) is less than that required to turn axis 2 as fast as axis 1, there will be a relative slip between both axles, but at all sliding speeds the clutch will transmit almost the same torque. Put simply, when slipping, the clutch acts much like a constant torque transmission system.
The value of this constant torque is also the maximum value of the torque that the clutch can transmit without slipping. At high sliding speeds there is also some viscosity drive which increases torque, but with polished disc surfaces it is usually negligible.
It is obvious that the same system can also act as a brake if one of the parts is held stationary. Under these conditions, there will be no effective braking action before the coil é is energized and, at this moment, a retarding torque will arise which will exert a braking action on the rotating axis.
FIG. 2 shows a variant of the embodiment of the invention. In this case, the axes are shown at 21 and 22 respectively. The axis 21 has an internal drum 23 (corresponding to the disc 3 of FIG. 1) which is rigidly fixed thereto.
This drum 23 is composed of paramgnetic material such as iron, except the brass ring 23 ', or of another non-magnetic material brazed or otherwise fixed in the vicinity of the "equator" of the drum, that is to say - say in the middle of the ends of the drum, as shown. The purpose of this piece of brass is to provide an air gap between the two halves of the drum
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
without reducing rigidity or mechanical strength. An outer drum 24 is fixed on the shaft 22 and it has a diameter such that there is only a very small air gap 25 between its inner surface and the outer surface of the drum 23, this air gap being much smaller than the distance between the two halves of the drum 23, i.e. smaller than the width of the brass ring 23 '.
The end plate 24 'can be made so that it can be separately screwed onto the body of the box 24 to form the outer drum, or the drum can be made in one piece, welded or assembled from another. known manner. The coil 26 is wound around the axis 21 to form a solenoid whose axis forms the. magnetic core. The insulated conductors 33 and 34 connect the coil 26 to the rings 22 on the axis 21. The brushes 31 bring the current of the battery 27 through the control rheostat 29 so as to be able to excite the field winding 26 by an outside source. It is understood that the battery and the rheostat are used as conventional symbols to represent any suitable source of current and the means of controlling said current.
Note that the far end of the drum is supported by the opposite axis by means of a bearing 37 to form a rigid and mechanically strong structure.
The bearings 36 and 37 should include bronze nozzles to provide a suitable magnetic air gap between each drum and the opposing axle, or alternatively the ends of drum 24 may be, for the same purpose, interlocked. non-magnetic matter. The space between the two drums is filled with a magnetic fluid mixture as before.
When the coil 26 is energized, the magnetic flux exits the core 21 radically from one end of a half-drum 23 towards the walls of the cylinder, thence through the small air gap in the magnetic fluid mixture to the drum. external 24 and return to the other half-drum 23 (since the magnetic air gap 23 '
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
is much larger than the magnetic air gap between the two cylindrical drums), and radially inward at the end of the other half-drum 23 and back to the core 21.
The magnetic clutch or braking action is the same as in figure 1 but it is more efficient because the magnetic torque is developed near the periphery of the drums, which gives the maximum possible arm torque. while the coil 26 occupies the central part of the structure, where, in any case, only a small couple can develop.
Instead of a field winding, it is possible, according to the invention, to use a permanent magnet as in FIG. 3 in which the rotor 43, associated with the axis 41.? is made of a permanently magnetizable material such as, for example, an alloy of aluminum, nickel and cobalt known commercially as "Alnico", which is strongly magnetized in spaced areas, as indicated , to alternately produce permanent north and dud poles at the periphery of the cylinder. The flux will therefore circulate in the space between the cylinder 43 and / the drum 44 as shown in FIG. 4. This space is filled with the magnetic fluid mixture, as before.
The operation is similar to that described previously, except that the force between the two axes cannot be regulated electrically as before. The system therefore constitutes a constant torque transmission at all slip loads or whenever the maximum holding torque is exceeded.
With a permanent magnet device, if it is desired to adjust the transmitted force, it is possible to vary the air gap between the two faces of the clutch, as shown diagrammatically in FIG. 4, providing the means of moving the two rotating parts 51 and 52 along the axis and relatively one not relative to the other. The fixed collar 53 on the shaft 52 rotates freely in the ring 54 of the control lever 55. It is evident that the movement of the lever 55 modifies the air gap between the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
parts 57 and 58 to vary the force transmitted between the axes 50 and 51, thus providing a mechanical equivalent to the rheostat 9 of figure 1.
Figure 5 is a diagram showing a brake using the principles described in Figure 1. Spatial efficiency is here improved by using multiple discs to increase the opposing magnetic surfaces. In this case, the system is shown as a brake with the reactive part 64 held stationary. In place of the single disc 3 of FIG. 1, several discs 63 are associated with the axis 61 and between these discs extend, brought closer to them, several washers or perforated discs 64 'associated with the fixed part. 64 to which they are fixed in a suitable manner such as, for example, by means of brass bolts 66 with non-magnetic spacers 68 '.
When no current passes through the coil 66, the axis 61 is free to rotate, but when the coil is energized, a field is created, as shown by the arrows, which produces the same effect as in figure 1, except that its action is multiplied by the number of plates used, assuming that the field strength is the same as before and that the diameter of the discs is also the same,
Since a brake must dissipate heat, a cooling system is provided by circulating the fluid magnetic mixture through a cooling coil 70. A pump 71 is provided for this system and it can be driven by the shaft.
61, as shown schematically in Figure 5.
This circulation also has the advantage of tending to maintain the fluid magnetic mixture in a homogeneous state and thus of decreasing any tendency for the solid particles to settle.
FIG. 6 shows a variant in which two axes 81 and 02 rotating with respect to one another can be magnetically coupled for the transmission of a power from one to the other by the action of the fixed coil 86. In this case, the box

te 84, provided with a non-magnetic part 84 ', surrounds the disc 83 and is filled with the magnetic fluid mixture as before. A jam nut 85 can be used to retain the fluid in the can. To produce the magnetic field, a stationary coil 86 having a magnetic support member 87 is used. The conductors 88 and 89 conduct current from a suitable adjustable source. The flow distribution is indicated by the arrows as before.
Although the chanp winding is stationary and the clutch plates 83 and 84 rotate when the clutch is energized, no eddy current will be induced in the discs by this relative movement because of the radial symmetry of the clutch. the structure and the polished faces of the plates which make that the flux cut by a given point of one of the disks in relative rotation, remains constant so that there is no variation of flux and consequently no induced current.
There may be some eddy currents induced in the iron particles of the magnetic fluid mixture, but since these particles are extremely small, there are no long paths for the current and the effect is the same as that obtained on extremely well rolled iron; Eddy currents induced in the magnetic fluid mixture will therefore be completely negligible. The main advantage of this variant is the elimination of rings and brushes.
Figures 7 and 8 show a modification similar in principle to those shown previously but which is suitable for operation with alternating current. To avoid excessive eddy current loss, rotors 93 and 94, attached to pins 91 and 92, respectively, are of conventional laminate construction. Coils 96 and 96 'are wound to produce north and south poles at 94A and 94B respectively (fig.
8). When an alternating or direct current passes through the field winding via the usual rings 95, the magneti-

that being present as in the other variants, the same clutch or force transmission action described above will occur.
Figures 9 and 10 show a variant similar to that of Figures 7 and 8 except that the inner part 103 carries the field winding instead of the outer part through which a return path is provided to the flux. Here, as in Figure 2, putting the coil in the center allows a larger arm for the torque for a given dimension of the construction.
