<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
L'invention vise à établir une machine pour as sem- bler des cigarettes à bout filtrant, cette machine compor- tant: un élément ou magasin de transfert de forme cylin- drique et à rainures longitudinales, destiné à recevoir les cigarettes et les bouts filtrants préalablement formés et venant d'une trémie;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to devices for making ciga-

filter-tipped remains ".
The present invention relates to an apparatus for the manufacture of filter tipped cigarettes and it is an object to provide a simple apparatus for making filter tipped cigarettes in a rapid and efficient manner. The invention further aims to provide an improved apparatus for the assembly of filter-tipped cigarettes, of the type in which a pre-formed cigarette
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
is joined to a filter tip formed in advance and then dressed, to constitute a complete cigarette.
The object of the invention is to establish a machine for assembling cigarettes with a filtering tip, this machine comprising: an element or transfer magazine of cylindrical shape and with longitudinal grooves, intended to receive the cigarettes and the filter tips previously formed and coming from a hopper;
a system which produces the rotation of this magazine, so that it transports the cigarette and the filter tip and deposits them either on a moving paper tape or on a fixed plate, with a view to their subsequent transport to a paper tape - a compressed air mechanism, or other mechanism, intended to ensure the abutment of the cigarette and the filter tip, this paper tape being caused to move parallel to the axis of the magazine, in order to transport cigarettes and filter tips assembled, with a view to their wrapping in the known manner, followed by cutting which provides cigarettes with a filter tip.
When a mechanical system is used to ensure the abutment between the filter tip and the cigarette, this is characterized by the provision of an endless belt conveyor provided with stops or cleats intended to act on the filter. rear end of a filter tip after the latter has been deposited by the magazine on a fixed plate and to advance the tip towards the cigarette, and then together therewith, the conveyor system being mounted on trunnions, and bodies being provided to switch this system periodically at determined points of the travel of the cleats, to release them from the cigarettes.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
cigarettes and filter tips, previously formed (or "pre-formed") pass from two separate hoppers, mounted side by side, to a transfer store consisting of a drum whose periphery is grooved longitudinally, each groove being called to receive alternately a cartridge and a filter end. The magazine is driven in intermittent rotation in a housing and deposits the cigarette and the tip on a paper ribbon or a stationary plate, with a view to their transfer to the dressing mechanism.
It should be noted that, by the term pre-formed garnet, is meant here a certain length of cord or taban sausage, dressed in the usual manner and, preferably, cut into sections each equal to the length of two cigarettes minus the length of a filter tip. Further, the preformed filter tip has a length equal to two normal lengths of filter tip, so that after the two elements consisting of a cigarette and a filter tip have been assembled and dressed, they are cut to size. mid-length of the cigarette and of the filter tip, so as to obtain pairs of cigarettes whose filter tips are butted together.
To facilitate understanding and implementation of the invention, it will be described below, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, schematically showing a filter-tip cigarette assembly machine according to one embodiment of the invention, comprising a mechanical system for ensuring the abutment between the cigarette and the filter tip .
Figure 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of another variation of the invention, using a.

air jet to ensure the connection of the cigarette and the filter tip.
Figure 3 is a cmupe along line III-III of Figure 1.
'The. FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 1, showing another position of the members.
Figures 1, 3 and 4 in particular, of the accompanying drawings, show a preferred embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention, intended for assembling filter-tipped cigarettes, and comprising a transfer magazine 5 which receives cigarettes and filter tips from a hopper 6 and places them on a fixed plate 7, from where they are removed by tabs 8 of a conveyor belt or chain 9.
The magazine 5 is usefully cylindrical in shape, is driven intermittently or continuously by a suitable mechanism and has on its periphery a series of longitudinal grooves 10 of U-shaped cross section and of a length adapted to receive a pre-cigarette. -formed, designated by A and a pre-formed filter, designated by B, the two elements being aligned.
Preferably, the hopper 6, or, where appropriate, the separate hoppers providing the separate elements, is or are arranged vertically above the transfer magazine, while being able to be arranged for another maceration. The object pursued consists in passing the elements towards the magazine 5 by gravity, with the possible provision of a vibrator mechanism to promote the advance, or of retaining rollers, 11 for example, called to ensure a suitable advance.
The arrangement is such that, each time the magazine has turned by the desired amount, a double length of filter tip and a double length of cigarette drop into each of the consecutive grooves of the drum, in the-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Which they are retained by a housing 12 until they are both deposited on the fixed plate 7 provided at the lowest point of the magazine, in alignment with the dressing device or paper folding mechanism 13.
Below the fixed plate 17 is the conveyor chain 9, which is driven at a greater speed than the paper tape forming the outer covering of the cigarette and applied by the dressing device, so as to seal the interval between the filter tip and the cigarette, but in a ratio of one to one. The cleat 8 fixed to the conveyor chain passes through a middle slot 7a which runs over part of the length of the fixed plate 7 and emerges above it by a sufficient distance to attack the end of the filter tip deposited on the plaque.
The mechanism is adjusted in such a way that when a groove in the magazine or barrel 5 has placed a filter tip and a cigarette on the stationary plate 7, the stopper 8 of the chain 9 touches the B end and moves the latter and the cigarette A so as to move them away from the barrel and abut them against the previous filter tip designated by B1 and located at the entrance to the covering device 13.
When the stopper 8 arrives at a pre-determined point of its course, that is to say after the cigarette and the filter tip assembled have been received by the wrapping or wrapping mechanism , the protruding tab 8 is instantly withdrawn from the slot 7a of the fixed plate 7 by tilting the entire conveyor system until the tab 8 is erased, after which the cigarette is grasped by the mechanism d. 'dressing and driven forward, leaving the end B1 at rest on the plate 7, figure 4.
The difference between the driving speeds of the cigarette and the tip by the conveyor chain and the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
wrapping mechanism is compensated by a sliding through the formed wrapping paper, at the entry of the wrapping mechanism 13, figure 1. The tilting of the conveyor chain is achieved by the provision of a lever with two arms, one of which, 14, carries a chain wheel 15 and is pivotally mounted around the center of the rear chain wheel 16, while the other arm, 17, oscillates periodically under 1 action of a cam 18, in synchronism with the intermittent movement of barrel 5, the two positions of this arm being shown respectively in Figures 1 and 4.
At the point of erasure of the stopper 8, the cigarette and the filter tip have already been pushed by this stopper into the strip of paper 19 forming the outer covering of the cigatette and have been entrained, in the known manner, with this ribbon. After this point, the long cigarette and long filter tip wrapped in the outer sheet of paper are cut to the desired length, in accordance with common practice in cigarette making machines.
Instead of using a mechanical system, retort described above, to secure the connection of the filter and the cigarette, a blowing mechanism can be applied, as shown schematically in Figure 2, the air jet being directed in the direction of advance of the paper tape 19, which moves on a fixed plate 7 not slit.
The two elements, namely the cigarette and the filter tip, are thus brought together after having been deposited together longitudinally by the barrel 5 on the paper strip 19, which is driven continuously or intermittently, in synchronism with the movement. of the barrel 5, to remove the assembled elements as they are deposited and are then completely surrounded or covered by the paper tape by a mechanism
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
known, pressurized air, applied for example by a nozzle 21, ensuring the abutment between the two elements.
The nozzle 21 may have a known shape and be actuated intermittently and in coordination with the movements of the barrel.
After having been provided with a second covering according to the invention, the pre-formed cigarettes and the pre-formed tips are cut so as to produce cigarettes with a filter tip, the cutting taking place "through the middle of the filter tip section. and the section of tobacco rod, which respectively constitute the two elements.
It will be appreciated that the invention is not necessarily limited to cigarette forming machines, as described herein, but is applicable to other cigarette making machines, whenever it is a question of transferring a cigarette. cigarette and the filtering tip associated therewith to a dressing mechanism or the like.
