<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Aeration device for filter cores used in foundry.
In order to facilitate the pouring of molten metal in foundry molds, it is known to use filter cores which are elements generally made of sand or agglomerated adobe, and of a shape which can be adapted to the orifice. casting of the mold. However, these filter cores are generally frustoconical in shape, and they are provided with slots or perforations the purpose of which is to slow down the passage of the molten metal by allowing its settling, its partial degassing, and by reducing its dynamic effects on the elements. walls of the mold.
Is shown schematically in section in FIG. 1 the upper part of a foundry mold fitted with one of these filter cores.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In this drawing, 1 designates the sand mold, 2 the filter core, and 3 the conical perforations of this filter core, the smallest diameter part of which is directed upwards, The molten metal is poured according to the arrow 4. This molten metal then passes with a relatively reduced rapidity by these perforations and undergoes settling and partial degassing, these gases escaping with the air contained in the mold through the vents or even through the mass of sand which is permeable.
A drawback of this device sometimes manifests itself towards the end of casting, when the mold is almost completely filled. In fact, when the molten metal covers this core-filter, the evacuation of the gases which it contains is hampered, and their release can then occur in a tumultuous manner, which can cause the metal to jump dangerously towards the outside. Furthermore, it is possible that some of these gases remain in the metal cast in the mold, this incorporation of the gases into the metal being of course harmful. At this time, the rupture of the nucleus is then frequent, and this rupture can have serious consequences.
There is shown in FIG. 2, in schematic section, the upper part of a casting mold in which the usual filter core serves as a support and centering elements for an additional core, centered on the other hand at the lower part. It will easily be understood that the rupture of this filter core then causes the decentring of this additional core, which is no longer maintained, which may have
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
as a consequence the scrap of the part. In this figure,
1 designates the casting mold, 2 the usual filter core provided with its casting perforations 3, and 5 designates an additional core, centered by the filter core 2. A rupture of this filter core generally results in off-centering ' of this nucleus 5.
Various attempts have been made to attempt to obtain the correct release of gases from the filter core when filling the mold by using the contact surface of this filter core with the mold itself, or even by using this additional core. However, correct contact between the surfaces of these different elements is difficult to achieve, and in most cases, towards the end of the casting operation, a tumultuous bubbling occurs which can bring about the consequences already envisaged.
The present invention overcomes these drawbacks, and relates to a device for aerating the filter cores used for foundry molds; comprising an additional core which comes into contact both with the wall of the mold and with the filter core which it is desired to allow aeration, this additional core being directed outwards and remaining by at least one of its faces in contact with the atmosphere.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, this additional core has the shape of a collar, which is applied both to the core-filter survival and to the wall of the mold, towards the contact surface of these two. elements.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It can thus be seen that a certain part of the surface of the filter core will be protected from any contact with the molten metal, the gases from this core filter possibly escaping through the interstices remaining between the additional core and the wall of the mold, or even through this additional core when its texture permits, by making use of its permeability.
Another advantage presented by this device is that it enables the mass of molten metal covering the filter core to be reduced, thereby achieving a significant saving in cast metal.
The description below, with reference to the appended drawing given by way of non-limiting example, will make it possible to better understand the invention.
Fig. 3 is a schematic sectional elevation of the device according to the invention, suitable for the vertical casting of casings.
In this drawing, the same references as in the previous figures have been used to designate similar components.
The mold 1, "the neck of which is frustoconical in shape, supports the filter core 2 by its external edges, as in the embodiments used to date, an additional core 5 also being kept in a vertical position in the center. of the mold by this filter core 2. A part 6 in the form of a collar, made of sand, rammed earth, partially or totally made of metal or any suitable refractory material, is applied to the external part of the filter core 2, at
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the place where this core.-filter comes into contact with the inner wall of the mold 1. \ This part '6 is frustoconical in shape and is thus both in contact with the mold 1 and with the core-filter- 2.
When the casting operation ends ,. the molten metal does not come into contact with the part of the filter core covered by the collar 6 ', which allows the gas from this filter core to escape through the small intorstice generally remaining between the external face of this collar and the mold, or even through this collar. Any bubbling is then avoided, and the operation can. continue normally and safely until the end.
It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the embodiment described without departing from the scope of the invention. The additional piece will thus be able to take any desired and suitable shape to achieve this dual communication between the filter core and the atmosphere.
