<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

TELESCOPIC RACKS WITH AUTOMATIC LOCKING and UNLOCKING
The invention relates to a control device by telescopic racks with automatic locking and unlocking.
According to the invention, the elements of the rack are guided one inside the other and are actuated successively by a single pinion and each element of the rack, sliding in a next element of this rack, being blocked, at the end of travel, in said next element, by a latch, the closing of which is controlled by the movement in one direction of the latter element, while the opening is controlled in the other direction of this movement.

By way of example, one embodiment of the invention will be described below, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view, partially in section, of the device showing the elements of the rack in their retracted position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device along line II-II of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view, partially in section, of the device, showing the elements of the rack in their developed position.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the device, showing the elements of the rack in their extended position, a partial cut away of the front face showing the control member of the racks.
In these drawings, which show the application of the invention to a jack, the device comprises a first rack element 1, sliding in a second rack element 2, U-shaped, whose toothed branches 3 and 4 , parallel, are joined together by a frame 5.
In the opposite faces of the branches 3 and 4 of the element 2, longitudinal grooves 6 are formed, forming slides, for slides 7, provided on the lateral faces and at the lower part of the element 1 (fig. Z and 4).
A stop 8, formed in the frame 5, limits the upward stroke of the slide 7 in the groove 6.
The rack element 2 slides in a frame 9, in which it is guided by longitudinal projections 10, provided on the outer side faces of the branches 3 and 4 of said element 2, which projections 10 cooperate with guides 11 and 12 formed on the inner faces of said frame.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A pinion 13, integral with a control shaft 14 journaled in bearings 15, provided in the frame 9, is intended to drive successively, during its rotation, the elements 1 and 2 of the rack. To this end, in the position of the rack elements 1 and 2, according to FIG. 1, which shows the device in its rest position, the pinion 13 is alone in engagement with the teeth of the element 1, because the branches 3 and 4 of the element have, under the frame 5, a space 16 without teeth. It follows that when the pinion 13 is rotated, it only drives the element 1, of the rack, until the slide 7, of the latter element, comes to rest against the stop 8 of the rack. frame 5.
At this moment, the element of the rack is driven upwards, by the element 1, and the toothing of the branches 3 and 4 of said element Z is brought into engagement with the pinion 13.
When the element 1 is at the end of its travel, it is necessary to block it in the element 2 to prevent it from descending as the said element moves. To this end, the device is provided with a latch 17, articulated at 18 between the branches 3 and 4 of the element 2. This latch 17 has the shape of an S, the spout 19 of which, in the position shown in Fig. 1, is pushed back by a cross member 20 of the frame 9, against the action of a spring 21.
It is easy to realize that during the upward movement of the element 2, the beak 19 of the latch 17 will slide on the crosspiece 20, to then escape, under the action of the spring 21, into the clearance 22 formed above said cross member 20, while the spout 23 of the latch 17 will engage, under the lower end of the element 1, in a hooking notch 24 (fig. 1 , 3 and 4) thus blocking said element 1, in the upper end of element 2.
The rack element 2 can then be driven by the pinion 13, while the nose 19 passes freely in a recess 25,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
provided in frame 9.
In order to return the rack elements 1 and 2 to their initial position, the shaft 14 is actuated in the opposite direction of the previous movement and, when in the downward movement of the element, the pinion 13 comes into engagement again. in the teeth of element 1, said pinion disengages from the teeth of element 2, while nose 19 of latch 17 is pushed back through cross member 20, against the antagonism of spring 21, thus freeing the spout 23 from the cavity 24.
The rack element 2 is limited in its downward movement by stop plates 26 provided on the frame 5, which come to rest on the guides 11 and 12 of the frame 9. The position of the said guides is stopped 25 by ratio / established so that during the descent of the element Z, the latter can still perform a slight downward movement which allows the free release of the latch 17 from the cavity 24.
The mechanism of the device is protected by a housing 27, a plate 28 fixed to the frame 5 of the element 2, coming to rest on the frame 9, in order to prevent the penetration of dust or other harmful materials into said housing. , when the jack is in its rest position.
By its small size and the arrangement of components, the jack which has just been described and shown in the drawings is particularly suitable for lifting articulated skips on vehicle frames. In such applications, the jack is supported on the frame of the vehicle, with the aid of two bearings 9 (FIG. 4) engaged on the journals formed by the bearings 15 of the shaft 14. The jack can thus oscillate around it. 'an axis for tilting, in either direction, a skip or other load.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the example described and shown in the drawings and that numerous modifications
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
constructive measures can be made to the device, without departing from the spirit of the invention. For example, the rack could be made up of a larger number of elements, controlled successively and blocked automatically, at the end of travel, using sliding bolts or the like.
