<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
voulue.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
REVENDICATIONS.

"Method and apparatus for controlling the characteristics of aerosols produced by an aerosol generator" *
In the use of aerosols (micelles or infinitely small particles, solid or liquid, suspended in a gas or in the air), it is often of great interest to be able to adjust their characteristics, in particular to be able to adjust the dimensions of the particles between certain limits. particles emitted by the aerosol generator, especially when these aerosols are used for disinfection or for therapeutic treatments. In fact, it is often necessary to remove from the aerosols the particles exceeding a determined size, and the object of the present invention is to achieve this removal by simple and effective means.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the invention, this result is achieved by virtue of the fact that, on their path leaving the generator to the place of use, the aerosols produced are subjected to an adjustable action of centrifugal force. It is understood that by subjecting a stream of aerosols to the action of centrifugal force, one causes in the first place a sedimentation of the largest particles, since this force is proportional to the mass of the particles and to the square of the speed. For a determined action of the centrifugal force, the sedimentation of the particles whose dimensions exceed a determined value will therefore be obtained.
To adjust this value, the invention provides a corresponding adjustment of said action, either by varying the intensity of the centrifugal force, therefore the speed imparted to the micelles, or by varying the duration of this action, which then remains constant, over aerosols. It goes without saying that we can vary both the intensity of the centrifugal force and the duration of its action.
The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out this method, this apparatus comprising, between the generator and the place of use of the aerosols, an adjustable curved path imparting a gyratory movement to the aerosols in order to subject them to the aerosols. adjustable action of centrifugal force. This adjustable path is advantageously constituted by a duct of adjustable volume, either by variation of its section, so as to vary its passage section and therefore the speed of the aerosol stream and the intensity of the centrifugal force, or by variation of its length, so as to vary the duration of action of a constant centrifugal force.
It is also possible to use a duct with adjustable curvature.
Other features and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description of a few exemplary embodiments, given below with reference to the appended schematic drawing, of which FIGS. 1 to 9 show vertical views, partially in section,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of nine variant embodiments of the apparatus according to the invention.
In the example illustrated in FIG. 1, the device comprises a bowl 1 containing the product to be sprayed, a nozzle 2 projecting the product sprayed against a permeable screen 3 consisting of a perforated sheet or plate, metal or made of insulating material, and a cylindrical casing 4 which fits to the bowl and contains the said screen. A sleeve 5 is slidably mounted on a cylinder 6 placed axially in the casing 4. This sleeve is guided in a collar of the cover 7 of the casing and can be locked in any desired position by means of a setting screw 8 .
An elastic helix 9, the inner edge of which is in contact with the cylinder 6 and the outer edge with the casing 4, is fixed by one of its ends directly or indirectly to the cylinder 4, at 10, and by its other end to the sleeve 5, 11.
The aerosols which have passed through the screen 3 travel the helical path delimited by the propeller 9, and leave the apparatus through the nozzle 12. The gyratory movement thus imparted to the aerosols rids them of the largest particles which return to the air. cup 1. By adjusting the position of the sleeve 5, it is possible to compress or relax the propeller 9, which remains in contact with the cylinders 4 and 6, so as to modify the cross section of the duct that it defines and to increase or reduce the speed of the aerosols and therefore the intensity of the action of the centrifugal force.
In the fully raised position of the sleeve 5, the micelles exiting at 12 will have the greatest dimension limits. On the contrary, they will be the weakest when the propeller 9 is compressed to the maximum.
In the construction illustrated, the screen 3 retains the majority of the wetting droplets, that is to say those which have no
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
not been divided to a size small enough to actually form an aerosol. The elimination of these wetting droplets can also be produced by any other suitable means.
It would also be possible to project the sprayed liquid obliquely against the wall of the casing 4, in order to already give it an impulse around the axis of the apparatus, in order to then introduce it into the helical duct.
In the variant shown in FIG. 2, use is made of a free elastic propeller 13 compressed between the screen 3 and the cap 14, which slides gently in the casing 4 and can be immobilized in any desired position by means of the setting screw 15. The outlet nozzle 16 passes through this cap.
The ends of the propeller are shaped so as to avoid any catching on the bearing surfaces. Under the effect of the movements of the cap 14, the propeller automatically twists and starts, keeping its inner and outer edges in contact with cylinders 4 and 6 respectively.
The propeller of Figs. 1 and 2 could be replaced by an elastic hose wound in a helix with contiguous turns. By compressing this pipe along the axis of the helix, an ovalization or a more or less pronounced flattening of its initially circular cross section is produced, thus varying the size of this section.
The apparatus shown in FIG. 3, as well as that according to FIG. 4, is based on the variation of the duration of the centrifugal action, by passing the aerosols through a helical duct of constant section, but of variable length.
As shown in Fig. 3, a cylinder 17, in which a peripheral helical groove 18 is formed, is mounted with gentle friction in the casing 4. To the latter is fixed a lug
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
19 which fits exactly in the groove 18 and guides the cylinder 17 so as to move the latter longitudinally in the casing 4, in the direction corresponding to that of the rotation imparted to it. The aerosols travel through the helical duct as far as the lug 19 and exit through the nozzle 20 fixed to the casing 4, in front of the said lug, which closes the part of the helical duct which is located above it.
It suffices to adjust the height of introduction of the cylinder 17 into the casing 4 in order to obtain aerosols whose micelles have dimensions between well-defined limits.
The same result can be obtained by other suitable means. As shown in Fig. 4, the cylinder 17 can be mounted to rotate about its axis, without longitudinal displacement relative to the casing 4, the lug 19 therefore being omitted.
The casing 4 is pierced with a series of openings 21, 22, 23 .., arranged so that, when the cylinder 17 is turned, one of these holes always reveals a point of the helical groove 18, of where the aerosols escape in a lateral sheath 24 to finally exit through 20. The aerosols are therefore collected at a height varying with the angular position of the cylinder 17, after having been subjected for a variable time to the action of centrifugal force , so that the dimensions of the micelles vary accordingly.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 5, the aerosol jet produced by the nozzle 2 is directed obliquely upwards, tangentially to the cylindrical casing 4, and propagates along a helical path between the casing 4 and the concentric guide cylinder 25, to exit through a duct 26 formed in a cap 27 which is integral with the cylinder 25 and can be moved with gentle friction in the casing 4, a setting screw 28 making it possible to fix it in any position
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
wanted. The axial displacement of the cap varies the length of the path of the aerosols and therefore the duration of action of the centrifugal force.
One could also use an orientable nozzle 2, in particular mounted to rotate about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder 4, so as to be able to vary the pitch, and therefore the length, of the helical path followed by the flow of aerosols between the cylinders 4 and 25, which can then be fixed relative to each other. The cylinders 4 and 25 could be replaced by truncated cones or other surfaces of revolution.
Although cylinder 25 is theoretically not essential, its use is practically desirable to prevent dispersion of the aerosol jet.
In Figs. 6 to 9, a cover 125 is fitted to the casing 4 and has a pipe 126 for discharging the aerosols towards the adjustable path which gives them an adjustable gyratory movement.
In the case of FIG. 6, this path is formed by a flexible, preferably elastic pipe 127, which forms a loop and one end of which is connected to the tubing 126, while the other end is connected to the place of use, by example a mouthpiece 128 in the case of aerosols for inhalations. This pipe 127 can in particular be made of elastic metal, rubber or the like, advantageously reinforced by a helical spring with practically contiguous turns.
It suffices to bring the end 128 of the tube 126 closer or further to contract or relax the loop of the tube 127 in order to vary the effect of the centrifugal force and cause the separation of a more or less large part of the particles. coarser. The volume and the section of the pipe remain practically invariable, but the centrifugal acceleration varies
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
with the inclination of the loop, for example the pitch of the propeller if it is helical, while the diameter can also vary during movements.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 6, the loop has the shape of a helical turn, but it could also have another shape, for example that of a spiral.
The movements of the pipe 127 can be obtained by any suitable mechanism, for example by actuating a sleeve 29 threaded by halves with opposite threads, which cooperates with two threaded rods 30, 31 also having opposite pitches, one of which is fixed, for example welded, to the cover 125, while the other is bent and supports the upper end of the pipe 127 by means of a collar 32.
Figs. 7 and 8 show particularly simple constructions, the aerosols leaving the cover 125 passing through a curved U-shaped duct, for example with a pointed base (33 in Fig. 7) or rounded (34 in Fig. 8). A middle partition 35, respectively 36, is slidably mounted in a guide 37 which is integral with the curved pipe and embraces the partition in a sealed manner. The position of the partition can be adjusted in a continuous or gradual manner, for example by means of a pin 38 passing through a hole in the guide and one or the other of a series of holes 39 provided in the guide. the movable partition.
The passage section and the average length of the curved duct, the concave wall of which is formed by the surface of the partition 35, resp. 36, which also allows the separation rate of the coarser particles to be adjusted.
As shown in FIG. 9, the movable element can, instead of determining the concave part of the curved duct 40, form the convex wall thereof. The movable element 41 is mounted in a
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
similar way to the partition 35 or 36, in a guide 42 secured to the duct 40.
The term "curved" employed in the description and the claims to define the path of the aerosols encompasses both the curved shape and that determined by a succession of angular deviations, such as it is for example. the case in Figs. 7 and 9.
It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the examples illustrated, but can also be implemented in various other constructive forms. Thus, the helical path could be replaced by a spiral path, the length of which would be adjusted or that one would twist more or less hard to vary the curvature of the turns. The various members can be made of any suitable material, for example metal, glass, plastic or molded material, etc., or optionally from an electrically insulating material.
CLAIMS.
1 - Method for adjusting the characteristics of the aerosols produced by an aerosol generator, characterized in that, on their path from the outlet of the generator to the place of use, the aerosols produced are subjected to an adjustable action of force centrifugal.
