BREVET d' INVENTION PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX MECANISMES DE POMPAGE ET DE PROPULSION.

PATENT OF INVENTION IMPROVEMENTS IN PUMPING AND PROPULSION MECHANISMS.
The invention relates to pumping or propulsion mechanisms) or to engines of the kind in which liquid, usually water, is introduced into a chamber or container and, by the explosion of a combustible mixture, in is ejected under pressure through a duct, which may be an extension of the supply nozzle and which is usually referred to as the working duct, for example to reach a higher level, or else from the rear with a view to ensure the propulsion by reaction of a ship.
Under one of its aspects, the invention relates in particular to arrangements for introducing into and igniting the combustible mixture of the chamber or container, in order to ensure the repetition of the inlet cycle of the liquid and the gas, one sort of Avoiding pulsation of the ejected liquid column. In another aspect, the invention relates to arrangements for ensuring easy initiation or starting of the cycle.
In accordance with the main aspect of the invention, motorsdu type defined and which include a combustion chamber placed between. a liquid inlet controlled by a one-way valve and a working duct along and through which the liquid is. ejected by the explosion of a charge in the chamber ,, are arranged so that the column of liquid ejected along the working duct,

With reference to the second aspect of the present invention, in order to force the cycle, there is advantageously provided a plunger or starting pump, near and, preferably, the flow rate side of the chamber, and this plunger, which can be actuated at hand, includes or is associated with a check valve allowing liquid to pass in the direc ..
tion of flow or to be ejected at the rear, but not to flow in the opposite direction
Advantageously, the flow duct of the chamber has a vertical portion, which can be a branch, in which the plunger can be moved alternately by means of a handle of the plunger rod projecting at the top of the vertical portion. , the conduit through which the liquid is discharged from the vertical portion being situated sufficiently below its upper end to provide sufficient free space for the housing of the plunger during normal operation of the engine.
To start, the plunger is quickly lowered and raised by causing the extraction of liquid and the entry of combustible mixture into the cylinder, and then the ignition of the load by the previously born means, thanks to which the cycle of operations. is primed, and the starter plunger can be locked in its inactive position leaving the working duct unobstructed.
If desired, a check valve can be provided in the working duct, especially when the starter plunger is housed in a branch of this duct, and this valve can be loaded in the closing direction, since It has been found that such an arrangement increases the frequency of the duty cycle by cutting off the continuous flow in the working duct and hence increasing the effective compression.
A baffle or baffle may be provided across the lower part of the chamber, if necessary in conjunction with an injector coming from the liquid inlet across the bottom of the combustion chamber, baffling the passage of the entering liquid. in the chamber and reducing the dilution of the new charge by the exhausted gases, and a venturi constriction at the inlet of the tube or working duct can cooperate with this injector.

In this embodiment, as illustrated in figs. 1 and 2, the head 3 of the combustion chamber 1 also carries a pendant cylindrical body, 9, in which moves in a reciprocating motion, during the operation of the engine, a double tubular valve 10 having an upper mushroom head 11 coming to rest on the upper end of the curps 9, and a lower mushroom 12 adapted to come to rest on the lower end of the body when the pressure in the combustion chamber is notably in excess over that of the ambient atmosphere.
Crossing the axis of the cylindrical chamber 1. perpendicularly and passing through the bottom thereof, there is provided an aligned assembly of an inlet nozzle and a working duct, including the ... trough comprises an open hollow casting 15, the upper part so as to provide access, for repair and, or adjustment, to a one-way inlet valve 13, this open upper part being normally closed. by a planar cover plate, of generally rectangular shape, fixed to the part 15 by studs and nuts 18.
The inlet piece 15 has an orifice or mouthpiece 19, facing forward, to which a suitable length of pipe can be assembled and, behind the orifice, a seat 20 has been formed for the relief valve. liquid inlet 16, shown as constituted by a valve carried by an arm 21 articulated with a pivot at 22, the inlet valve being mounted on the arm 21 by means of screws 23.
The inlet part 15 is advantageously distinct from or separated from the combustion chamber 1 as shown, and an injector nozzle 24 extends from this inlet part substantially across the base of the combustion chamber, this base or bottom 25 being of partially circular shape, providing a duct between the inlet part 15 and the working duct which will be more fully described below with reference to FIG. 3, said chamber bottom in circular part also housing the injector nozzle 24.
In view of the. connection with the working duct, the circular base of the chamber is extended at 26 in the form of a circular connection aligned with the inlet part 15 and the injector nozzle 24, and in this

vertical and curved portions of the central section 41, and the plunger has a series of nozzles or passages 49 with which can cooperate a flexible diaphragm 50 mounted on the upper face of the plunger itself in order to allow the fluid to flow through the piston end, in the direction of the combustion chamber towards the rear of the working duct, ie the portion 42 of the extension, but not in the opposite direction.
51 designates a suitably shaped stop member, determining a position and limiting the displacement of the flexible diaphragm 50, while. 52 designates a handle disposed at the top of the plunger operating rod 45 for convenient handling of the plunger.
for start-up, the plunger is lowered and liquid from the vertical portion of the central section 41 passes in an upward direction, through the nozzles or passages 49, into the plunger 44, the latter then being sharply lifted causing the extraction of the liquid from, and the penetration of the combustible mixture into the chamber 1, as well as the ignition of the load by the aforementioned means, whereby the operating cycle is initiated and the starting plunger can be blocked in its inactive position shown, position in which it does not form an obstruction to the passage of liquid through the working tube.
If desired, and as illustrated in this fig.3, a contact switch 53 can be mounted on the cover plate 47, this inter =. breaker cuts off the ignition circuit and prevents ignition of the load except when the plunger is in its raised and inactive position.
In the variant shown in fig. 4, a starter plunger 54 is housed in a branch 55 perpendicular to an extension
56 of the working duct, this extension being a rectilinear extension of the body 26 and comprising the one-way valve described below.
As in fig. 3, the plunger 54 has a maneuvering rod
57 projecting upwardly through a cover plate 58, like and provided at its upper end with a handle 59, but / in this case the cylinder 55 of the plunger is a branch of the extension 56 of the working duct. it is not necessary to provide lights
