<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La figure 1 se rapporte à une première forme d'exécution et est une vue en coupe verticale d'un rivet creux à tige dé- foncée, présentant une partie tronconique comme connu ;
La figure 2 est une vue en coupe verticale d'un rivet creux doté de griffes;
La figure 3 est une coupe verticale de ce rivet creux en place sur une matrice pour être rivé dans un boîtier renfer- mant un organe élastique femelle (ressort annulaire fendu) pour s'engager sur l'élément mâle du bouton et qui est centré sur un poinçon ;
Les figures 4 et 5 sont des coupes verticales montrant respectivement deux phases successives du rivetage de ces deux parties (rivet creux et boîtier) de l'élément femelle du bou- ton-pression, et mettant en évidence la déformation du rivet creux: entreces deuxphases du rivetage, et l'inclinaison consé- cutive des griffes ;
La figure 6 est une coupe vertical? montrant en prise les deux éléments mâle et femelle d'une autre forme d'exécution de bouton-pression ;
La figure 7 est une coupe verticle d'un élément mâle de bouton-pression, dont le rivet creux;
tige non-défoncée est en place sur une matrice ordinaire et prêt, après avoir tra- versé la pièce à munir du bouton, à être rivé dans le boîtier portant un organe élastique mâle ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La figure 9 est une coupe verticale de ce même bouton après rivetage complet sur ladite pièce ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

FIG. 8 is a vertical section of this pushbutton shown during riveting on said part; @
FIG. 9 is a vertical section of this same button after complete riveting on said part;
Figures 10 to 16 relate to alternative embodiments.
There is shown in Figure 1 a hollow rivet 1 with frustoconical part 2 crimped into the curved edges 3 of a cap 4, reinforced by a metal blank 5, according to a known arrangement @. The hollow rivet 1 comprises a hollow shank broken open the.
FIG. 2 represents a hollow rivet of the same type as that of FIG. 1c, but the frustoconical part 2 of which could also be only substantially frustoconical, is provided * with reliefs, for example with claws 20; The number, dimensions and distribution of these reliefs or claws are variable according to the nature of the part for which the button is intended.
The hollow rivet 1 is capable of being assembled, by riveting, with a rigid housing 8 which comprises, according to FIGS. 3 to 6, a housing body pierced with a central hole 14 for the passage of the rod 1a of hollow rivet 1, after this rod has passed through the part 11 for which the button is intended, either by passing through a hole previously drilled therein, or by piercing this part itself. Figures 3, 4 and 5 show an example of combined drilling and riveting, to. using a tool, ensuring the automatic centering of the housing 8 with respect to the rod 1a. The hollow rivet 1 in place on a mobile die 10 of this tool is centered by a cylinder-casing 10a surrounding the matrix.
The die 10 and the punch 12 of this tool mounted on a press (not shown
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tees) are coaxial ;, by construction. For its part, the punch 12 centers, by penetrating therein, the housing 8, containing, in a groove 8a, a split annular spring 17, which is intended to expand elastically to allow the passage of the head of the element. male button, when buttoning. A radial clearance sufficient to allow this expansion or expansion is provided between the bottom of the groove 8a and the spring 17 at rest.
The form and. the dimensions of the punch 12 are such that, when it is engaged in the housing 8 until it touches the bottom 8b of this housing, the punch 12 elastically expands the spring 17 in the radial direction until the. periphery of this spring 17 substantially touches the bottom of the groove 8a, while through the hole 14 of the housing 8 (FIG. 3) protrudes, outside the latter, an axial extension 12a integral with the punch 12.
As the spring 17 is of constant section, the centering of the housing 8 on the punch 12 is thus carried out very exactly and coaxially with the hollow rivet 1, since the die 10, on which the hollow rivet 1 is centered, and the punch 12 are coaxial by construction.
Of course, to allow this relative position of the punch 12 and d.u casemaker S, the opening 9 provided in the latter is suitably sized to allow the punch 12 to pass freely.
At the first moment, shown in FIG. 3, the part 11 for which the button is intended is drilled, this part being placed on the cutting edges of the shank 1a of the hollow rivet 1, the frustoconical part 2 of this rivet not yet being in contact with said part.
By the relative bringing together of the die 10 and the punch 12, said part 11 is sheared between the cutting edges.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of the rivet rod 1a and the sharp-angled end 12b of the extension 12a of the punch 12. This extension gradually penetrates into the tubular rod 1a and progressively flares the latter which, having completed crossing the part 11, s 'is engaged in the central hole 14 of the housing 8, while the claws 20 (FIG. 2) penetrate into the part 11 to be anchored therein.
Then the grooved part 12c of the punch 12 edges in a spread shape 13 the end of the rod 1a on the edges of the hole 14 of the housing 8 (FIG. 4).
Finally, an additional relative approximation of the matrix 10 and the punch 12 produces the deformation of the rivet part 2, until then frustoconical until it is applied against the cap 4 (or against the blank 5 reinforcing the latter. this). During the collapse of the frustoconical part 2 which, after having presented, on the side of the part 11, a frustoconical convexity, then presents a substantially spherical concavity (the cap 4 being a portion of a sphere), the part of the part It squeezed between the hollow rivet and the casing was strongly gripped by the continuous surfaces facing casing 8 and rivet 1.
In addition, the claws 20 penetrate the part 11, the angle a, which the claws 2'0 make with the part 2 of the rivet 1, remaining almost invariably during the riveting, so that the claws incline towards the shank of the rivet, during the aforementioned collapse of part '2.
There is shown in FIG. 6 a similar female button element engaged on a male head 15 screwed onto a support 16. The difference of this female button element from that shown in FIGS. 5, is that the housing 8 retains the spring 17 prisoner no longer by a groove 8a of the housing, but by an attached washer 17a, crimped on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
for housing body circumference 8.
This then presents a circular shoulder 8c which limits the lateral displacement of the spring 17, as did the groove Sa; in the example of Figures 3 to 5, the washer 17a being crimped around the perimeter of the body of the housing 8.
This arrangement makes it possible to give the outer diameter of the housing 8, and, consequently, the outer diameter of the washer 17a, a value which can greatly exceed the outer diameter of the spring 17. In fact, only the shoulder 8c is depending on the outside diameter of the annular spring 17, the lateral displacements of which must be limited to a clearance equal to that which the groove 8a allowed in the preceding example.
The body of the housing 8 can then present, in contact with the part 11, a bearing surface as large as one wishes, for the solidity of the fixing on the part 11, even though one would have reduces the width of the head 15 (for aesthetic or space reasons) and, consequently, the diameter of the annular spring 17.
The difference in diameter between the circular shoulder 8c and the periphery of the case 8 can, in fact, vary within wide limits. On the contrary, in the example of FIGS. 3 to 5, a determined diameter of the male head and of the spring results in a determined diameter of the housing.
In the example of Figure 6, the part 11 is drilled in advance. The free end of the shank of the rivet 1 no longer needs to be sharp, as in the previous example, and can be ductile to reduce the riveting force.
When we want to detach the female element from the button, we pull on the part 11 as shown in phantom in the drawing. in the direction of arrow F. It will be understood that, as a result of the pressure of the spring 17 of the female element on the walls of

male button head 15, the entire female button element tends to. remain engaged on the male element, that is to say tends to separate from the part 11 requested by the tensile force exerted in the direction of the arrow F. Also the part 11 tends to slide between rivet 1 and casing 8 and to escape.
However, with the arrangement described, this sliding is made impossible by the strong pinching exerted on the part 11 by the continuous gripping surfaces of the rivet 1 and of the housing 8, namely the collapsed part 2 of the rivet 1 and the housing. 8; the retaining action exerted by this pinching produced by continuous gripping surfaces is further increased by the action of the inclined claws 20 (figures 5 and 6) anchored in the thickness of the part 11.
Figures 7, 8 and 9 show an exemplary embodiment of a press stud element with a male elastic member 18 which is trapped in the housing 8, in a similar arrangement to. that shown in Figures 3 to 5 for the female elastic ring 17.
The housing 8 is, here also pierced with a central hole 14 reserved for the passage of the hollow rod 1b of the hollow rivet 1. However, this rod lb. is not broken in, but terminates in a tapered end 1c, which is better suited to pass through a woven piece of loose texture, such as that shown by reference 11 (the fibers thereof being then separated without being cut ).
The shape shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9, of the male resilient member 18 allows the latter to engage in a simple hole 19 drilled in the support 16 of suitable thickness (Figure 9).
As in the previous example, the frustoconical part 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of the hollow rivet is such that at the end of the riveting on the woven part 11 it takes a curvature opposite to its initial curvature and presses it. part 11 controls the case 8 with a rigid continuous surface.
The claws 20 cut in part 2 of the. rivet 1 are before fitting, preferably parallel to the axis of the button .; as shown in figure 7; these claws then easily penetrate between the weft and the warp 21 of the woven part 11; at the time of the deformation already described? of said par.rtie 2, the claws 20 incline towards the axis of the rivet and compress the part of the part 11 taken between them and the walls of the. rod 1b of rivet 1 passing through the part.
Any risk of slipping the. part 11 relative to the button is thus doubly prevented by the pressing of the part between rigid continuous parts and by the arrangement of the claws 20.
The tool 10, 12 also allows the maintenance and centering of the two parts of the male element, due to the fact that the punch 12, after having entered freely through the opening 22 of the male elastic member 18, slightly forces la. part 23 of the latter.
The end of the punch 12 is able to rivet the end of the shank lb of the rivet 1 after the latter has passed through the part 11 and has penetrated inside the casing 8 through the hole 14 of the latter. As the shank 1b is not broken, the end of the punch 12 will preferably be given a slightly concave shape which gives the seam of the shank 1b a domed shape.
Figures 10 to 16 relate to various alternative embodiments of the invention.
Figure 10 shows axial section and before riveting,

a counter-rivet intended to escape part of a female element of a press stud made in accordance with the invention. '
Figures 11a and 11b also show in axial section respectively two different rivets which can be used with the counter-rivet according to figure 10.
FIG. 12 shows, in axial section and after riveting, the whole of the female element after mounting on a flexible support.
Figure 13 shows in axial section and before riveting a rivet which can be used with a counter rivet intended to form part of a male snap fastener element made in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 14 shows this counter-rivet in one piece also in axial section.
FIG. 15 shows, in axial section and after riveting, the assembly of the male element after its mounting on a flexible support.
FIG. 16 shows, in axial section, the assembly of a male element (the counter-riveting of which is in two parts) after its mounting on a rigid support.
According to a modification made to the invention, the rivet, @ can be constituted by a tubular part which can be cylindrical or slightly conical over its entire length as shown at 251 in FIG. 13 or which can have a complex shape. (figure 11a and 11b) comprising a cylindrical or slightly conical part 25, of reduced section, and a frustoconical part 26. The end of larger section of the rivet comprises a base 27 which is relatively wide in the case where the body 251 is cylindrical or frustoconical over its entire length (FIG. 13) and which is less important in the case of a rivet of complex shape.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
This base 27 is intended to bear on one of the faces of the support 4 and may be covered, retort shown in Figures 11a, 11b and 12, by a shell 28 held in place by crimping.
The end 29 of the rivet, opposite to that where the base is located and which is intended to penetrate into the counter-rivet after having passed through the support 4, can be obtained by cutting the body of the rivet straight off (fig. Llb). or can be hummingled or slightly flared (figure 11a) or it can be engraved or serrated to facilitate its penetration into the support 4, in the case of a self-drilling, and its deformation during riveting.
The counter-rivet 30 of the female element or 31 of the male element comprises an axial passage 32 which presents a constriction at an intermediate point of its length, the entrance 33 of said passage, which is on the side of the support 4, a- ra, has a cross section greater than that of the end 29 of the rivet. From this entrance 33, the channel 32 tapers to the aforementioned constriction.
In the case of the flared end rivet (figure 11a), the cross section of the strut is advantageously given a slightly smaller extent than that of the end 29 of the rivet so that the latter meets a certain resistance. when passing through the constriction when the rivet is forced into the counter-rivet using an appropriate setting tool, which results in a clean cut of the support 4 in the case of self-drilling.
Beyond 1 constriction) the cross section of the channel increases, forming a flaring 34 whose wall is suitable for serving as a support or seat for the tivure 351 or 352 (figures 12 and 15) obtained by the deformation of the end 29 of the rivet by the punch or the like of the setting tool.
The location and shape of the free edge of the flared part 34 are, of course ;, chosen so that the fabric,
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
cation of the counter-rivets can be done in a simple, rational and economical manner and that the presence of the rivet 351 or 352 does not interfere with the opening and closing of the push-button.
Figure 14 shows the counter-rivet of a male element, in one piece and the shape of which is such that the inlet 33 of the channel 32 'is located. substantially in the same plane as the base 311, which is particularly suitable for fragile supports 4, the self-drilling of which must be possible without great prior deformation of the support. On the other hand, for supports which do not require this precaution, the entry 33 of the channel 32 can be moved further away from the base 311 to approach the head 312, which facilitates manufacture.
The axial passage in question generally has a relatively short length when the counter rivet is in one piece (figures 10 and 14) and may, on the other hand, be longer when the button or the ball of the counter rivet of the element. male comprises two parts 361 and 36 (figure 16) nested one inside the other and interconnected by crimping, the internal part 362 being able in this case to have a shape such that it itself defines the channel 32 and that the flared part 341 is present near the head of the ball-
The wall of the axial channel 32 being separate from that of the body of the element (male or female) of the press-stud, established according to the invention, said body, for the purposes of buttoning,
may have a large diameter while those of the channel and of the rivet may be small, which facilitates self-dumping and does not weaken the support 4 where the latter is crossed by the rivet.
As a result of which one obtains male and female elements, for press studs of the type "to rivet" which present in addition
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
of their simplicity of constitution and ease of their installation, the following advantages: 1) the wall of the axial channel 32 of the counter-rivet 30 of the 31 serves: - thanks to the progressive reduction of the section of this channel from the entry 33 until its strangulation - to the guiding of the end of the rivet 25 or 251, which is forcefully engaged in the said channel which automatically corrects the errors of coincidence or alignment of the axes of the rivet and the counter-rivet during the installation of the element.
2) By the end 29 with a sharp or slightly humming edge of the rivet 25 or 251, we obtain a progressive drilling of the support 4 - in the case of a self-drilling - since the material constituting said support is taken or clamped between said ridge 29 and the wall of axial channel 32, which provides a similar cut 2. that obtained with the aid of scissors.
3) In the case where a rivet of complex shape is used (fig! La.) The collapse of the truncated cone 26, at the heart of the riveting makes it possible to absorb part of the excess length of the rivet especially if the. cap or the support 4 is made of a flexible and compressible material and which therefore flattens strongly -antre the rivet and the counter-rivet.
The material then tends to penetrate into the cavities which remain between the rivet and the rivet rivet after riveting - as shown at 37 in FIG. 12 - which is favorable to the contact between the support 4 and the riveted element of the bou - ton and, consequently '., to the immobilization of the latter while preserving the material of the support 4.
4) As the connection between the rivet and the counter-rivet is ensured by a rivet 351 or 352, which can easily be obtained by a rivet 351 or which the gold can easily obtain without slits and without urics, this rivet is of excellent quality and allows the use of certain metals which cannot be used for flat or spread rivets.

As goes without saying and as it follows moreover already from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts, having been more specifically considered; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
