REDRESSEURS SECS .
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Dans les dessins: la figure 1 représente une batterie de redresseurs en coupe longitudinale avec un interrupteur thermique bi-mé- tallique logé da,s le boulon d'assemblage suivant la présen- te invention; la figure 2 est une élévation d'une partie de l'en- semble de la figure I;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

DRY RECTIFIERS.
The present invention relates to metal rectifier assemblies or batteries of the type generally continued by a series of plate rectifier elements bearing a central bore, these plates being mounted on an insulated pin or stud. A characteristic example of such rectifiers is constituted by the sets of elements commonly used consisting of selenium rectifier elements, with., Plates or discs, assembled on an insulated mounting stud.
This type of rectifier is normally cooled by, convection for each element or plate and, under normal conditions, gives satisfaction without risk of deterioration of the plates and their counter-electrode generally constituted by an alloy with a melting point. relatively low.
However, in the event of a short circuit or overload, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Rectifier plates can be heated to too high a temperature, causing deterioration or destruction of the active layers. It is therefore useful to provide protection against overloading the plates.
Although this protection can be provided in the circuit, for example, by using circuit breakers with various overloads, there are certain industrial uses where it is good to provide independent protection of the auxiliary devices.
This object is advantageously achieved by the present invention which provides for protection against overloads by a device inherent in the rectifier, said device being arranged in such a way and being such that high efficiency and safe operation are obtained. For this purpose, a simplified and robust bi-metallic thermal switch is used, housed in the assembly bolt or stud on which the temperature rise of the rectifier plates acts to interrupt or modify the circuit. for the purpose of protection. The assembly stud according to the present invention is made of a metal of high conductivity in order to improve the operation of the device.
The above features and other advantages of the present invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which the same references are used for the corresponding parts in the various views.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a bank of rectifiers in longitudinal section with a bi-metal thermal switch housed in the connecting bolt according to the present invention; Figure 2 is an elevation of part of the assembly of Figure I;
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. I, given in a variant; Figure 4 is a cross section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the devices in accordance with the invention are used in association with a rectifier unit of the standard type comprising selenium plates each constituted by a base plate of the usual type generally made of iron and comprising a A selenium layer on one side covered by the alloy forming the counter electrode, the barrier layer being formed electrically between the selenium and the counter electrode in a known manner. These rectifier elements, in the form of discs or plates, are shown at r and are stacked on a mounting bolt or stud 2 and are connected in series to constitute a bank of rectifiers.
As shown, these rectifying elements comprise a central bore to give passage to the bolt 2 and to the isolation furnace 3 interposed between said elements and the bolt 2, this bolt penetrating into the bores of the end supports 4 while being isolated from these. last as shown. End insulating discs 6 are provided as shown, and pins or terminals 8 and 9 are connected to the rectifier to connect the set or battery of rectifiers. The contact spacers 10 as well as the usual elastic contact washers II are interposed between the consecutive plates, as shown. These washers are made of a conductive substance in order to ensure the electrical connection of the rectifying elements in series in the usual way.
All the straightening elements are assembled by nuts 12 screwed onto the ends of the bolt or threaded stud 2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
According to the present invention and as shown in Figures I and 2, the connecting pin 2 is constructed in such a manner that it forms part of a bi-metallic thermal switch suitably connected for con- control the circuit in which the rectifier operates, this stud being of a suitable material.In this purpose, the stud is made of a metal alloy having a low coefficient of thermal expansion such as Invar, and comprises a central and longitudinal bore 15 in which a rod is placed: the contact rixed it by a rilciage at its anterior end only, the other end of the rod exiting into a housing 18 having a thread and executed in a portion of larger section 19 of the stud 2, this part also being externally threaded.
The rod 16 is made of a metal or alloy having a high thermal expansion coefficient, such as brass or copper, and its outer end is disposed on the same axis as a contact element 21 cooperating with it, and mounted in an insulating part 22 screwed into part Ig of the stud.
The parts 16 and 21 forming contacts are arranged so as not to touch each other, that is to say to leave the circuit open when the rectifier is working under normal conditions, but their distance is such that an excessive rise in temperature or abnormal plates will cause, by heat conduction through the stud and the rod 16, an expansion of the latter which will come into contact with the part 21, in a known manner.
With part 21 connected to a conductor 24 and a like conductor 25 being connected to the opposite end of the stud, a circuit is closed which is in parallel with the rectifier circuit 26, as shown, for control. of the latter circuit by means of the electromagnet 27 and the switch 28 located in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
rectifier circuit. Thus, mounted in the rectifier bank, is obtained a control device controlled by the heat coming, by conduction, from the plates, said device causing the opening of the rectifier circuit in the event of a rise in temperature, in the purpose of protecting the rectifier.
FIGS. 3 and 4 have shown another device actuated by heat produced by conduction from the plates and from the stud 2, this device providing for the use of a stud, of the usual form. According to this variant, a collar forming a thermal conductor 30 and supporting a thermal switch is provided, this clamp being mounted on the stud in the immediate vicinity of the rectifying elements.
It is provided with tareilles 32 comprising bores to receive the thermal switch constituted by a threaded stud 33 of low coefficient of thermal expansion, provided with a longitudinal and axial bore in which is placed, being fixed at one end. by screwing, a rod 34 having a high thermal expansion coefficient ahaloge to that which has been described in relation to the first embodiment.
The rod 34 is mounted on the same axis as the contact pin with which it cooperates and which is supported by the insulating sleeve 36 fixed by thread in the part 37 of the stud, as shown.
In this example, the conductors 38 of the control circuit are connected to the end of the stud and to the oontaot pin 35, and, on the other hand, the control circuit comprises an electromagnet 40, actuating, when 'it is energized, a switch 42 which it opens so as to switch on the protection resistor 44 which is thus connected in the circuit of the rectifier. In this variant, the fixing pin 2 'is isolated, as shown, from the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
end pieces 4, but the conductive collar 30 is in direct contact with the stud without insulation, in order to obtain better heat conductivity.
Likewise, the stud of the thermal switch device is in direct metal-to-metal contact with lugs 32 in order to achieve better thermal conductivity. These contacting surfaces can, if desired, be welded or brazed to improve heat conductivity.
Although the present invention has been described in relation to an exemplary embodiment, it is clear that it is in no way limited to this example and that the latter is subject to numerous variations and modifications without departing from the field. of the invention.
