<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

amidines can also be formed during the reaction from corresponding compounds. Thus, for example, instead of amidines, it is possible to react in the presence of ammonia or of agents which can give ammonia, iminoethers, thioiminoethers, thioamides or aliphatic nitriles, the latter in particular in the presence of hydrogen sulfide or agents which can give hydrogen sulfide. The formation of the pyrimidine ring can be carried out in one or more phases.
It is for example possible to first prepare an amidine containing the radical of a derivative of malonic acid, then to close the nucleus.
Another embodiment of the process of the present invention consists in reacting amides of disubstituted malonic acids as defined above with halides or ethers-salts of aliphatic carboxylic acids containing 4 to 7 carbon atoms. carbon, or to react amides of the aliphatic carboxylic acids defined above with halides or ethers-salts of malonic acids in which the methylene group bears two hydrocarbon radicals. It is also possible first of all to prepare acylamides of malonic acids, then to close the pyrimidine ring. By halides or ethers-salts of aliphatic carboxylic acids, is also meant derivatives of malonic acid in which the methylenic group bears one or two alkyl radicals together containing 2 to 5 carbon atoms.
When the latter are made to react with amides of acids
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
malonic, a carboxylic group usually separates during the reaction.
This last variant of the process of the present invention can be represented by the following equation, taking as an example the ether-diethyl salt of mono-ethylmalonic acid:

R1 and R2 having the meaning already given,
For the reactions indicated, it is possible to operate in the presence or absence of diluents and / or condensing agents or catalysts. The diluents employed can be, for example, alcohols, dioxane, benzene, toluene, etc.
Among the condensing agents, we can mention: alkali and alkaline earth metals, such as sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium and their alcoholates, their amides, their hydrides and their compounds with hydrocarbons, such as sodium alcoholates, butylate tert. potassium, tert. potassium, sodium amide, sodium hydride, butyllithium, phenyl-sodium, phenyllithium,

, or on the other hand phosphorus pentoxide and zinc chloride.
The most suitable diluting agent or condensing agent will vary depending on the procedure employed.
The starting materials used in the reactions above and not described in the publications can be prepared by methods known per se.
The compounds obtained by the present process are drugs or intermediates for the preparation of other valuable compounds.
The invention will now be described in detail with the aid of the following non-limiting examples, in which the amounts are given by weight unless otherwise indicated, and the temperatures in degrees centigrade.
Example 1.
23 parts of metallic sodium are dissolved in 450 parts by volume of absolute alcohol. The solution was cooled to 5-1, then 61.3 parts of n-butyr-amidine hydrochloride was added. After stirring for a short time, the sodium chloride separated completely. 120.1 parts of ether-diethyl salt of diallylmalonic acid are introduced into the n-butyr-amidine solution obtained. After allowing to stand for one hour at room temperature, the mixture is heated in a water bath for 8 hours. It is then cooled to room temperature, neutralized with alcoholic hydrochloric acid and cooled in ice.
