<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Improvements made to spark plugs".
The present invention relates to spark plugs for internal combustion engines, of the kind in which the central electrode is made of a metal core to which is attached or with which a tip is made in one piece. smaller diameter firing electrode, said electrode being positioned in a ceramic insulator, the hole of which is narrowed at its inner end where the ignition tip passes through the hole.
In some constructions there is an annular space between the metal core and the insulator hole, a space into which combustion products can enter Hot combustion products entering / entering and leaving the insulator hole , can cause corrosion of the metal core and overheating of the center electrode, especially when a platinum or platinum alloy ignition tip is attached to a silver, copper or carbon core. other metal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the constructions hitherto employed, a sheared vitreous material has sometimes been used to form a gas-tight seal or seal in the hole of the insulator, but these closures have always been arranged at the end of the metal core. away from the ignition tip and therefore the combustion products have not been prevented from coming into contact with said metal core.
The object of the present invention is to prevent in a simple and convenient manner, combustion products from coming into contact with the metal core of the central electrode.
The invention comprises the combination with a ceramic insulator and with an electrode having an ignition tip at its internal end, of a sealed protective closure of the core, made, at least in part, of a material. vitreous and located in the insulator at the end of the core where the ignition tip is located, the closure being resistant to the action of combustion products and being brought, after assembly of the parts, to flow so as to fill the annular space between the ignition point end of the core and the adjacent part of the insulator. Advantageously, the closure is made to flow under the action of the heat and pressure.

Fig.6 shows another form of construction to which the invention is applicable.
In the example shown in fig.l to 5, a ceramic insulator 10 (fig.l) has over most of its length,,. :,.,? a hole or conduit 11 which terminates in a relatively smaller hole 12, at the inner end of the insulator. The electrode (fig.2) consists of a metal core 13 'comprising an ignition tip 14 of smaller diameter. The core may be made of copper, silver or other suitable metal, and the ignition tip of platinum or a platinum alloy, attached to the core in any suitable manner. Alternatively, the core and the ignition tip can be made in one piece, for example nickel. or nickel alloy.
The closure 15 (fig. 3) is made in the form of a pellet, and is composed, at least in part, of pulverized glass or other vitreous material capable of forming a gas-tight closure, such as, for example, a mixture. of sprayed boro-silica glass, known by the trade name "Pyrex", and sprayed alumina in equal proportions, to which a binder such as solid paraffin is added so that it can be molded under the desired form. The size of the pellet is such that it can be slid over the ignition tip and into the hole or conduit in the insulator.
After the assembly of the constituent parts mentioned above, as shown in fig. 4, they are advantageously heated to a temperature sufficient to soften the ball, for example 850 C, and ,, by an axial pressure applied to the core and to insulator, the sealing material is caused to flow in the annular space between the end of the core and the insulator, as shown in fig. 5. A little sealant can also pass through the narrow clearance between the ignition tip 14 and the hole 12 in the end of the insulator.
Additional means may be employed to further secure the electrode to the insulator. Any suitable means and

Ordinary can also be used to make an electrical connection between the core and a terminal on the outer end of the insulator, but these details do not form part of the present invention and therefore are not shown in the drawings.
The invention is not limited to the example described above.
So instead of making the dumpling fully or partially. in pulverized glass, it can be made, at least in part, of any vitreous material capable of withstanding the temperature of the engine and the action of the combustion products, the invention not being either limited to electrodes of circular shape in cross section. Likewise instead of forming a square shoulder at the junction of the core and the ignition tip, and a corresponding shoulder in the insulator, as shown in fig. 1 to 5, these parts can be shaped in such a way that the parts of larger diameter gradually join those of smaller diameter, as shown in fig. 6.
