<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Dans le cas particulier des tubes luminescents où la tension d'amorçage est supérieure à la tension d'entretien;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In the particular case of luminescent tubes where the ignition voltage is greater than the maintenance voltage;
it is this starting voltage peak which must be shifted on the curve towards point E or from the latter. In the example of FIG. 2, by shifting, at the dean of a synchronous switch, the alternating voltage, when. it has an instantaneous value such that Bou B "corresponding to points A 'or A" of the curve, beyond. from point A representing the minimum ignition value, the tube lights up immediately and remains on to the fixed point E representing the tube extinction voltage.
It is therefore easy to see that it suffices to vary, using the synchronous switch, the position of the ignition point between A and E to obtain, by alternation, a succession of variable times of illumination of the tube. o corresponding thus to more or less brief light effects, the sum of which represents a more or less intense flux for the human eye or for an observation equipment exhibiting a certain inertia with respect to the frequency.
According to another embodiment of the invention, a modulator element can also be used. electronic device consisting of relay tubes such as thyratrons, ignitrons, etc. If we take into account, in fact, that, when we apply, in the high vacuum tubes, determined voltages to the various electrodes, the currents obtained are constant:
and perfectly controllable and that, in the gas tubes, the electrons coming from the cathode and attracted by the anode when it is positive can be controlled, by a grid which, taken to a negative potential, causes the application to 'the plate of a higher potential dependent on the grid voltage and determining the ionization by shock and! lacing, the modulation of the. grid voltage then allows
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to control the plate voltage determining the starting and consequently, in the case of an alternating current supply, to control the desired moment of the period for which the current will begin to flow.
In current thyratron tubes, the cathode heating time must be taken into account, mainly for high powers; it should also be noted that overloads are dangerous for the cathode.
In ignitrons, on the other hand, the initiation of the provoked arc. by the seni-conductive electrode in the cathode allows to have a usage time of a few microseconds, thus giving a practically instantaneous switch.
If we represent (V. freezes 3) the anode voltage as a function of time; we can thus draw the grid diagram g (hatched part) where, for any point representing the instantaneous gate potential located in or above the hatched part, we obtain the ignition (the gate voltage which determines the ignition being a function of the positive anode voltage).
If an alternating voltage is applied to the grid, the phase shift of which can be varied, the arc will split when the grid voltage is in phase with the plate voltage for all positive half-waves (fig. 4).
If, on the other hand, the grid voltage is in opposition to the plate voltage, the arc will never be triggered (fig. 5). It is therefore necessary to take into account that the grid cannot control 1 tare quesi the phase shift is back.
On the basis of these two observations, if we shift the phase of the grid tension, we obtain the diagram of fig. 6, on which we see that the arc cannot strike at the start of the positive half-wave in P, because the instantaneous voltage of the grid, as a result of its phase shift, is too
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
negative, but only at point C; it will persist until the end of the alternation, only to re-anchor at point D symmetrical to C and so on.
Fig. 7 of the accompanying drawings represents, by way of non-limiting example, the diagram of a device designed for the application of the invention and produced with thyratron tubes and igniton tubes.
In this diagram, we see at 1 the electric discharge tubes whose light intensity is to be modulated, which are supplied via transformers 2. Ignitrons 3 are mounted in series with the primary of transformers 2 When the arc is not struck, the impedance between the source and the transformers 2 is infinite, the voltage drop in the arc ignited (6 V.) makes the resistance very. low.
Ignition of the ignitrons is controlled by thyratrons 4, the gate voltage of which is supplied by a mid-tap transformer 5. A resistor R1 limits, the gate current, of each thyratron. The variable phase shift is obtained by a variable resistor-capacitance 'assembly' R2-C, the value of the elements of which is chosen such that the current, in the resistance-capacitance branch, is high compared to the gate current. - Optionally replace the capacitor C. The progressive variation of the resistance in the rheostat R2 causes a phase shift variation extending over a range of 0 90.
According to a variant of the invention, in the case of a polyphase distribution line, one 'can use, - to obtain the desired modulation of the @luminous intensity, a device similar to the stator of an asynchronous motor, the voltage being taken at the terminals of a single-phase rotor, the position of which is varied in the stator.
