"Stylographe" Conv. Int.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Stylograph" Conv. Int. : Priority of a patent application nc 665,209 filed in the United States of America. April 26, 1943 by Benjamin de FOREST BAYLY @
The invention relates to stylographs and more particularly to those of the type in which the writing tip fits into the stylograph when not in use. Stylographs of this type are in great demand, especially when the writing fluid is viscous instead of liquid ink.
But these stylographs have a serious drawback in that the sleeping bags and other dust from the pocket or wallet in which the stylograph is carried get into the open end through which the writing point enters, to the point of prevent the stylograph from functioning properly.
The object of the invention is a form of construction in which the opening of the end of the pen holder through which the writing tip enters, can be slightly @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
closed from the inside by a simple movement printed on the srlograph, so as to prevent foreign bodies of any kind from entering when not in use.
The accompanying drawing shows a preferably adopted embodiment of the invention applied to a round tip viscous ink type stylograph, but it should be understood that the invention is not. limited to stylographs of this type, but can be applied to any other type of stylograph or other object in which a protruding tool of any kind fits into a cylindrical holder when not in use.
On the drawing :
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section on a large scale of a stylograph of the aforementioned type according to the invention.
Fig 2 is a side elevation of the interior stylograph elements of fig. 1, the outer casing of which is shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a section similar to FIG. 1, but on which the writing tip is retracted and the opening is closed to prevent the penetration of foreign bodies of all kinds.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to, lA, freezes 2 in which the elements occupy the same position as in FIG. 3 and,
Figs 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are cross sections on a larger scale taken along the lines bearing the corresponding numbers in FIG. 1.
According to the embodiment shown in the drawing, 1 designates the cylindrical outer casing of the stylography, which may be of any suitable material, for example metal, ebonite, plastic, etc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
etc., 2 denotes the ordinary conical portion of a round tip type pen which, for ease of assembly, constitutes a separate part of the cylindrical casing 1. 3 denotes the cap which forms the closed upper end of the stylograph cylinder and which is rotatably mounted in this cylinder in the usual manner to extend and retract the writing tip 4.
In the construction form shown, the writing tip 4 is attached to the end of a cylindrical ink reservoir 5, the construction form of which does not form part of the invention. The tubular ink reservoir is supported in an elongated sleeve 6 to which it is attached to accommodate axis movement while the writing tip is being pushed out and in. The sleeve 6 comprises at an intermediate point, fairly close to the closed end of the stylograph, a portion of larger diameter 7 which fits smoothly into the outer casing 1.
The sleeve 6 comprises beyond this portion 7 of larger diameter, on the side of the closed end of the stylograph, opposing longitudinal grooves 8 serving as slides for the heads of two studs or rivets 9, which, in order to function, are joined together. The inner end of the cap 2. The outer cylindrical surface of the portion 7 of the sleeve 6 has a right-hand helical groove 10 into which penetrates the head of a rivet 11 projecting inwardly from the casing 1 of the pen. - graph, at a point which is located at a distance from the end of the rotating cap slightly less than the length of the portion of larger diameter 7 of the sleeve 6.
The device described above, which is known, serves to bring out and retract the writing tip when the cap 2 of the end of the stylograph is rotated. The rotational movement of the end cap is transmitted
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to the sleeve 6 by rivets 9 which enter the slots 8 of the sleeve 6 beyond the portion of larger diameter 7 and at the same time allow the sleeve ±. to move along the axis with respect to the end cap.
The sleeve 6 and with it the writing tip 4 and the ink reservoir 5 undergo a displacement in the longitudinal direction of the casing of the stylograph by means of the rivet 11 which enters the helical groove 10 of the pen. the outer surface of portion 7 over a sufficient length to retract the writing tip to a depth sufficient to prevent it from being damaged from the outside and at the same time that the ink of the stylograph may stain the fabric from the pocket.
The operation of the mechanism described above is satisfactory, except that the dust and down from the pocket in which the pen is carried collects in the open end of the portion 2 preventing the pen from functioning. properly, which is always unfortunate. In fact, some pen manufacturers whose writing tip fits into the envelope when not in use provide an additional removable cap that sits over the open end of the pen, although this hat is not necessary, unlike in the case of an ordinary pen where the writing tip is always out of the envelope.
The improved stylograph according to the invention has a closure member 15 which serves to close the open end of the pen holder when the writing tip is retracted. This member which is described below is preferably made of metal, but may be of gutta percha or other plastic material and is combined along the axis with a cylindrical sleeve 16 which fits smoothly into the casing of the stylograph. The sleeve 16 has
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
on its outer surface a helical groove 17 of pitch opposite to that of the groove 11.
In the example shown, the groove 11 is / not right and the groove 17 is not left, but the reverse combination could be adopted if desired. When the writing tip 4 of the pen is pulled out in position In operation, the inner end of the sleeve 16 contacts the larger diameter portion 7 of the sleeve. 6.
The inside diameter of the sleeve 16 is large enough to allow it to rotate freely around the sleeve 6. The portion of the sleeve 6 which is located in the sleeve 16 has longitudinal guides 18, of sufficient width to accommodate the rivet heads 19. projecting inwardly from the sleeve 16, so that the sleeve 16 rotates with the sleeve 6 but can move along the axis with respect to it.
A rivet 20 protrudes from the inner surface of the casing 1 of the stylograph and its head enters the helical groove 17, so that when the sleeve 16 is twisted by the rotational movement of the cap 8 of the At the end of the casing of the stylograph, this sleeve receives movement in the longitudinal direction of the casing 1 of the stylograph, according to the direction of rotation of the cap 3.
The closure member 15 of the opening of the conical end 2 of the stylograph casing consists of a conical hollow extension of the sleeve 16, the outer end of which of reduced diameter fits into the opening of the sleeve. end of portion 2 when the writing tip is retracted.
The shape of the sleeve 16 is chosen so that when the sleeve is at the left end of travel, FIG. 3 and 4, the conical outer surface of the extension 1; 1, 'rests against the inner surface of the portion 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
and the. extended cylindrical portion of reduced diameter passes through the opening of portion 2 over a sufficiently large length, so as to close the open end of this portion by preventing dust, dirt, down, etc., from entering .
The closure member 15 is slit on its opposite sides, as shown in the figure, and the material of which it is made is sufficiently elastic so that the slit portion of the tapered end moves away under the action of the tip. write with the stylograph when it is pushed, by the movement of rotation of the cap to the right, as has been explained previously.
To allow the pen cap to be rotated to the left beyond the point which is necessary to fit the writing tip into the envelope in the position of fig. 3, the outer surface of portion 7 of sleeve 6 has a peripheral groove 21 which communicates with helical groove 11 thereby allowing sleeve 6 to rotate without receiving longitudinal movement relative to the stylograph shell. Likewise, the sleeve 16 has a peripheral groove 22 at its end adjacent to the conical extension, so that the sleeve, continuing to rotate with respect to the casing of the stylograph, does not continue to receive a longitudinal movement.
The operation of the stylograph according to the invention is as follows:
If it is assumed that the parts are in the operating position as shown in fig. 1, the rivet 11 is in the helical groove 10 of the portion 7 of the sleeve 6, while the rivet 20 is in the peripheral groove 22 of the sleeve 16 and the closing member 15 of the opening of the end of the portion has fully retracted into the stylograph envelope.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
If you turn the stylograph cap in the direction indicated by arrow A in fig. 2, that is to say to the left, the writing tip 4 of the stylograph fits into the envelope, but the sleeve 16 which rotates with the sleeve 6 does not receive any longitudinal movement due to the presence of the rivets 19 and longitudinal slots @ 18. At the end of the movement of the writing point from the position of fig. 2 in that of FIG. 3, the rivet 11 circulating in the helical groove 10 arrives at the peripheral groove 21 and the cap of the stylograph, continuing to turn, does not cause any additional longitudinal movement of the sleeve 6.
It will be noted that the helical groove 10 only makes one full turn between the peripheral groove 21 and the upper end of the portion 7. As a result, a full turn of the cap 3 is sufficient to bring the writing point back from the position of operation in its fully retracted position of fig. 3 and 4. It will also be noted that the helical grooves 10 and 17 meet the corresponding peripheral grooves 21 and 22 at the same point of the periphery, ie on the upper side of the stylograph, fig. 2.
When the rivet 11 of the groove 10 is in the position of FIG. 2, the rivet 20 is in the peripheral groove 22 so that by rotating the cap! - and with it the sleeves 6 and .16 in the direction of arrow A, the sleeve 6 comes to the right in the position of fig. 3 by retracting the writing tip, while the sleeve 16 and the closure member 15 which is attached to it, although rotating with the sleeve 6, do not receive any longitudinal movement and the closure member 15 remains in the retracted position shown in dotted lines in fig. 3. At this time, the rivet 11 has entered the peripheral groove 21 while the rivet
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
20 is about to enter the helical groove
17.
Consequently, a second complete turn of the cap ¯3 in the same direction causes the closure member to come out through the opening of the portion 2, so as to close this opening, as shown in fig. 3. During this movement, the writing tip 4 remains in the retracted position.
If you wish to use the stylograph again, turn the cap 3 in the opposite direction to that indicated by the arrow A. This movement has the effect, first of all, of making the closure member retract into the
Position of the freeze l. At the beginning of this movement, the rivet 20 is in the helical groove 17, so that the rotational movement of the sleeve 16 necessarily causes its longitudinal movement to the right. On the other hand, the rivet 11 is in the peripheral groove 21 at a point just ahead of the meeting point of the peripheral groove and the helical groove, so that the sleeve makes about a full turn before the rivet 11 enters the helical groove.
At this moment, the closure member 15 is completely returned to the position of FIG. 2, so that the writing tip 4 can come out by continuing to turn the cap in the opposite direction to that indicated by the arrow A. While this rotational movement continues, the rivet 20 remains in the peripheral groove 22 saias cause the longitudinal movement of the sleeve.
