<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La figure 1 est en partie une coupe longitudinale suivant l'axe du banc d'étirage et en partie une élévation de côté de l'ap- ,pareil;
La figure 2 est une coupe horizontale de certains orga- nes de la fige 1;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

EMI1.1
Disturbances in the drawing of metal pipes and the like.
This invention relates to improvements in the drawing of metal tubes or the like, by means of a drawing bench,
Formerly, it was common in the cold drawing of metal tubes to forge or hammer the anterior end of the tubular blanks to give them a flattened, curved or rounded shape, so that they could be introduced easily - lement in a drawing die, over a short length sufficient to allow the blanks to be gripped by suitable clamping means of the movable carriage along the drawing bench to effect the drawing. This end shaping process

is known as "'t aggingll (forging).
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
More recently, the process known as "push-pointing" has come into use in the practice of stretching. It has been applied on a large scale to the drawing of massive bars, but it has also given satisfactory results with gauges and casing gauges.
In this case, the blanks are not forged (tagged) but they are gripped, near their anterior end, by a pushing device, which pushes that end into the drawing die, 'the short distance required so that' it is gripped by the appropriate means provided on the carriage of the drawing bench. In this process, the anterior end of the blank retains its initial shape, but its dimensions are reduced to the extent which corresponds to the diameter of the tubes to be obtained.
In the Applicant's patent of the same date entitled "Improvements in the manufacture of metal and similar tubes", provision is made to carry out a similar reduction in the diameter of the anterior end of the blanks before the installation of the blank. blank for the stretching operation.
However, it is not excluded that the blanks of certain cali- arms and more particularly those, whose narrowed anterior end has a relatively thin wall compared to the dimensions of the straight section or to the diameter and that certain blanks tubulars made of non-ferrous metal may have their front end crushed, during the pushing contraction, under the radial pressure exerted by the clamping means of the carriage of the drawing bench, during the pushing contraction of this end . an object of the present invention is to provide an improved drawing bench, making it possible to remedy this eventuality.
According to the present invention, the bench for drawing metal tubes or the like, including the drawing carriage comprising
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
takes a device to be introduced into the anterior extract of the blanks to support this end and avoid its crushing under the pressure exerted by the clamping means of the carriage, is characterized in that a conical buffer, substantially in linear contact or by the edge with the inside of the orifice of the front end of the blanks is advanced so as to fit into this orifice and internally support the blank at its anterior end when the drawing carriage reaches the end of its return stroke after a stretching operation.
Advancement of the conical plug is advantageously obtained by means of a knocker, mounted at the rear end of the drawing bench and cooperating with a lever mechanism, mounted on the drawing carriage, this lever mechanism being connected to the buffer in a positive way.
The knocker and the lever mechanism are advantageously arranged to automatically remove the buffer from the end of the drawn tubes at the end of the drawing operations.
In order for the invention to be fully understood, it will be described below in more detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example only, one form of an improved drawing bench for cold drawing. of metal tubes
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is partly a longitudinal section along the axis of the drawing bench and partly a side elevation of the apparatus;
FIG. 2 is a horizontal section of certain parts of fig 1;
Figure 3 is an irregular cross section of Fig 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the drawings, 1 shows the blank, the front end of which is narrowed, for example by means of the means described in the Applicant's English patent application No. 1098/46. The blank is shown in the stretch position. In this position, the contracted or narrowed end is engaged in a drawing die 2, mounted in a base 3 at the rear end of the drawing bench 4, only parts of which are drawn. For stretching, the blank is gripped, in the known manner, by the clamping means (such as jaws or claws 5), mounted on the stretching carriage 6, as shown in FIG. 2. The carriage 6 is mounted on wheels 7, rolling on tracks 8 of the draw bench 4.
During its forward stroke, in the direction of the flecrie (fig. 1), the carriage is driven in known manner, by an endless chain 9, with the intervention of pivoted hooks 10. During its rearward stroke, a another chain (not shown) drives the carriage, (the known manner, in the opposite direction. The carriage carries rollers 11, co-operating laterally with the flights 8 to guide the moving carriage.
According to the present invention, the apparatus comprises a traction plug 20, slightly conical and advantageously arranged so as to adapt perfectly to the orifice of the anterior contracted or narrowed end of the tubular blank 1, when it is engaged over half of its length in the hole of the blank, as shown in the figure. The contact of the pad 20 and the blank 1 is substantially linear or at the edge, as will be appreciated.
The axis of the pad coincides with the axis of the draw bench 4, also in view of the reciprocating movement along the draw bench. The buffer is advantageously mounted on the end of a cylindrical bar or pin 21, carrying at the other end, a stick or a sleeve with pins 22.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
This sleeve is provided with transverse journals 23 which rotate in bearings 24 of two small oscillating forked arms 25, integral with a sleeve 26, carried by a transverse shaft 27; the latter is carried by bearings of the drawing carriage b. The pin or rod 21 is extended forwardly beyond the sleeve 22 and is mounted in bearings 28 of the frame of the carriage 6, such that the assembly, formed by the sleeve 22, the buffer 20 and the rod 21, can move along the axis of the blank 1. The back and forth movement of this assembly 20, 21, 22 is advantageously controlled by appropriate arms, acting on the shaft 27 of the oscillating arms. 25.
Far therefore, the rearward movement of this assembly, in order to introduce the tampon 20 into the narrowed anterior end of the blank can be controlled by an arm 29, directed downwards and integral with the oscillating sleeve 26; and the forward or opposite movement can be controlled by an arm 30, directed upwards, bent forward and wedged on one end of the transverse shaft 27.
When, during its return, the drawing carriage 6, the clamping means or claws 5 of which are loosened, is about to engage on the anterior contracted or narrowed end of the blank, protruding from the die stretching in the stretching position, the inner arm 29 of the oscillating sleeve 26 meets a knocker, having the shape of a rod or a spring bolt 31 (fig, 1) and mounted on the frame of the bench of stretching, and this causes the retraction of the assembly 20, 21, 22 so that the conical plug 20 is introduced into the orifice of the front end of the blank. This movement is effected in such a way that the pad applies exactly and rigorously in said orifice, in substance following a linear contact or by the edge.
The clamping means or claws then close automatically by gripping the contracted or narrowed end of the blank and the hook or the like 10 of the stretching carriage 6 8 'hooks automatically.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
only in the endless chain 9, so that the stretching of the blank begins and continues until the blank is fully stretched into = tubes
It should be noted that during the whole operation. from the clamping of the contracted or narrowed end of the blank until the end of the stretching, the plug 20 remains engaged in the hole of the blank 1, so that this end is effectively supported against crushing by clamping pressure or other possible actions.
When the tube is fully stretched through the drawing die 2, the pores, developed by the chain control mechanism 9 of the drawing bench, decrease considerably which results in a corresponding decrease in, Electric or other power, developed by the driving unit (eg an electric motor) or other mechanism. At this point, the buffer 20 is released so that it can be removed from the orifice of the tube. For this purpose, a striking bar 32 acts on the upper arm 30 of the oscillating shaft 27.
This bar is advantageously mounted on one side of the front end of the draft bench 4 on two parallel oscillating arms, directed upwards and only one of which is shown at 33; these arms are mounted on short shafts, carried by consoles 34, laterally to the drawing bench. The shaft of the posterior arm of the pair of arms, which is that shown at 33, carries an arm 35, extending downwardly and coupled to the rod 36 of the piston of an air or pressurized fluid cylinder 37, the bottom of which is pivoted on a support or a fixed bearing 38, provided on the side of the drawing bench.
The admission of pressurized fluid to cylinder 37 is controlled by a valve (not shown) controlled by a solenoid or the like; this valve automatically controls the admission as soon as the electric power or other power decreases, as it has been previously
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
plied above. As a result of the movement of the piston in the cylinder 29, the system of levers 33, 35 causes the lowering of the striking bar 32 which strikes the upper curved arm 30 of the oscillating shaft 2? whereby the tampon 20 is withdrawn from the orifice of the stretched tube and the latter can therefore be removed.
This removal of the tampon 20 from the orifice of the stretched tube is easily accomplished by the linear or edge contact between the tampon and the blank, which is an important feature, both from a practical point of view and from a point of view. of precision in obtaining a perfect tube.
The striking bar 32 should be of the length necessary to make contact with the curved arm 30, regardless of the length of the tube to be stretched. It can be automatically returned to its initial position during the return stroke of the drawing carriage 6; when the latter reaches the end of its return stroke, the plug 20 is introduced into the orifice of the anterior contracted end or retracted with a new blank to be stretched, eto., as will easily be understood.
It is preferable to mount the stop devices or pins 39 on the stretching carriage 6 (pin 2) on each side of the conical plug 20 and to provide grooves 40 in the plug 20 or a similar conformation of the base of the plug. . These stop pins 39 constitute, in fact, stops preventing the stretched tubes from advancing between the claws 5 of the drawing carriage, during the controlled withdrawal of the conical plug 20 from the orifice of the tubes, at the end of the draw. (The claws 5 being naturally loosened in the known manner). If at this time; the drawn tubes were inadvertently moved in the direction of the conical plugs, they did not ventilate free from the claws 5.
The stop pins do not extend all the way to the contracted or retracted end of the blank, when the stretching carriage occupies its original position at the start of stretching. , as can be seen in figure 2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The invention advantageously lends itself to the combination. with the invention described in the aforementioned patent of the Applicant.
