<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

II Starting device for internal combustion engines mounted on motor vehicles ".
The present invention relates to a starting device for internal combustion engines mounted on motor vehicles, comprising a starting shaft which can be temporarily coupled to the motor shaft.
Internal combustion engines mounted on motor vehicles are generally accompanied by a starter whose energy is supplied by a battery of accumulators. However, especially in cold weather, you may not be able to start the automobile's engine using your usual electric starter.
We are then obliged to use a crank operated by hand and which is temporarily coupled to the shaft of the motor to be started. This way of proceeding requires
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
sometimes makes intense and often repeated efforts to get the engine started, and sometimes causes accidents.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks.
To this end, the starter shaft is rotated at a speed suitable for starting the internal combustion engine, by an electric motor supplied by a distribution network and which actuates it by means of a reducer. appropriate speed.
A starting device of this kind is of very advantageous application in all establishments where it may be necessary to start several automobile engines per day, especially when these engines must be started at approximately fixed time and especially in automobile garages where repairs are carried out on behalf of third parties because, in this case, it quite often happens that the starter supply battery is already exhausted when the vehicle is brought to the garage by its owner. In addition, when the engine is not in normal operating condition, repeated cranking attempts to which it is subjected quickly also depleted the backup battery that a garage usually has in reserve.
Preferably, the starter shaft is connected to the output shaft of the speed reducer by an elastic coupling.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the elastic coupling consists of a coil spring into which enter both the output shaft of the speed reducer and the starter shaft to which its ends are fixed.
It is also very advantageous to have the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
aforesaid coil spring in a sleeve which leaves a little play between it and the spring which it surrounds.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which schematically show, and by way of example only, one embodiment of a following device. invention.
FIG. 1 is, after partial breakdown, a perspective view of a starting device according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is an elevational view of this starting device seen in the direction of the arrow Y in FIG. 1.
Figure 3 is, on a larger scale, a vertical section through the elastic coupling between the output shaft of the speed reducer and the starter shaft.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
The starter device shown in the drawings comprises a starter shaft 2 which can be temporarily coupled to the shaft of an internal combustion engine mounted on an automobile. This starter shaft is rotated at a speed suitable for starting the internal combustion engine, by an electric motor 3 supplied by an electrical distribution network and which actuates the shaft 8 by means of a suitable speed reducer. 4.
The output shaft 5 of the speed reducer is connected to the starter shaft by an elastic coupling.
This is constituted, in the case of the drawings, by a coil spring 6 into which enter both the output shaft 5 of the speed reducer and the starter shaft 2. The ends of the spring to coil 6 are fixed
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to these two trees. This spring is fixed to the shaft 5 by means of a pin 7 around which it can pivot thanks to a slight play between it and this shaft.
On the other hand, the starter shaft 2 is connected to the spring 6 so that it can be replaced quickly by another.
For this purpose, it is provided with a pin 8 which can be engaged in the loop 9 of a hook formed at one end of this spring so as to drive the starter shaft in the usual direction of rotation represented by the arrow X, through pin 8.
There is also a slight clearance between the spring 6 and the starter shaft so that the latter can pivot around the pin 8 by which the spring can drive it in rotation.
The coil spring 6 is arranged in a sleeve 10 which leaves a little play between it and the spring which it surrounds. This sleeve is mounted on the spindle 7 of the output shaft of the reducer so as to be able to pivot slightly around the axis of this spindle.
The assembly of the elastic coupling thus formed not only makes it possible to absorb the shocks due to the abnormal resistance encountered by the starter shaft 2 when the output shaft 5 of the speed reducer tends to drive it, but also plays the role of a double articulated joint. This coupling therefore greatly facilitates the adaptation of the starting device according to the invention to motors whose shafts are not oriented exactly in the direction of the output shaft 5 of the speed reducer.
The removable mounting of the starter shaft 2 in this coupling makes it possible to adapt the device according to the invention to engines provided with different types of temporary coupling to a starter shaft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
It suffices for this to have a few types of starter shafts corresponding to the usual types of temporary coupling devices.
The starting device according to the invention is mounted on a bar 11 at a distance from the ground close to the usual height of the shafts of automobile engines above the ground. Bette baree can be more or less inclined with respect to the ground in order to adapt to each particular height of the shaft of the motor to be started. This change of inclination is facilitated by the presence of a joint at the bottom of the bar 11.
As .represented, this bar is articulated at 12 relative to a foot 13 which carries it, about a horizontal axis parallel to the axis of the output shaft 5 of the speed reducer.
In Figure 2, there is shown in phantom lines 11 in one of its inclined positions. As can be seen, in this position, the center of gravity of the assembly formed by the electric motor 3 and the speed reducer 4 is not very far from the base of support. This inclined position also allows the worker who holds the starting device in equilibrium to more easily withstand the reaction exerted in the direction of arrow Z by the motor casing 3 when the latter is set in rotation.
It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiment shown and that many modifications can be made in the form, the arrangement and the constitution of some of the elements involved in its realization, without departing from it. within the scope of this patent, provided that such modifications are not inconsistent with the subject matter of each of the following claims /
