PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX MOYENS POUR ORIENTER LES PALES DES HELI- , CES, EN PARTICULIER CELLES DES VENTILATEURS A GRANDE VITESSE.
----------------------------------------------------------------

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE MEANS FOR ORIENTING THE BLADES OF HELI-, CES, IN PARTICULAR THOSE OF HIGH-SPEED FANS.
-------------------------------------------------- --------------
The invention relates to propellers with orientable blades, and relates in particular to the orientation of the blades of the propellers of fans, in particular of high rotational speed fans.
It is known that the modification of the angle of attack of the pays of a rotating propeller considerably modifies its operating characteristics, and that, in fans, it is possible to obtain, by relatively small variations of the angle of attack , modifications, in particular significant improvements in flow-pressure-power curves.
It is therefore advantageous to be able to modify the angle of attack of the blades of rotating propellers, or in other words their orientation. However, the practical realization of such blades presents difficulties, in particular because of the considerable centrifugal actions which are exerted on these pays and of the need to ensure their adjustment positions during the rotation of the propeller whereas it is, if not imperative , at least extremely desirable to be able to modify the orientation of the blades without stopping operation, if necessary at reduced rotational speed.
The difficulties naturally increase with the increase in peripheral speeds, as well as with the number of blades to be controlled simultaneously.
The object of the invention is to provide means suitable for satisfying these desiderata, which are at the same time simple and therefore do not involve high set-up costs.
In accordance with one characteristic of the invention, - considering in any case the centrifugal actions as predominant - the ples are made to understand a pivot, in particular a pivot whose axis coincides with or substantially agrees with the radius passing through their center. , be of gravity, this pivot being mounted so as to allow it to rotate in a radial housing of the hub, a device acting in the manner of a displacement brake being associated with said pivot and, or with said hub to prevent, during the propeller rotation, an uncontrolled change in pay orientation.
The device acting in the manner of a movement brake can be constituted either by cooperating friction surfaces, in particular carried respectively by the pivot and by the hub, or by the association of an anti-friction axial stop carried by the pivot. and of the control of movement of the blades in their orientation movements, or also by the association of a more positive setting device, in particular of the "cone" type, and of an orle. ne antagonistic elastic, or by other associations of the µcomponents of the above means.
According to another characteristic of the invention the movements

orientation of the pins are controlled, in particular simultaneously, by a device capable of displacement along the axis of the hub, said device rotating with the hub and receiving its displacements.

The assembly of the plate 1, suitable for allowing the movements of orientation of this p <118, comprises, in the embodiment shown, a pivot E, integral with the blade, and whose axis merges, or roughly, with the radius passing through the center of gravity of the blade 1, this pivot being engaged in a radial housing of the annular member 5 if desired, ball bearings or rollers can be interposed between the pivot and its housing.
Advantageously, the blade and the pivot are made of light metal and, as is the case shown, a sleeve 9, made of more resistant metal, at the same time providing paths, is engaged by clamping on the pivot 8. bearing of each of the 10 and 11 in bearings

The pivot 8, or else the sleeve 9, is provided, in the vicinity of or .- 'at the internal ï6 "1" e1 J-Üi with a clean friction plate or disc 1. Sufficient wedging is thus achieved to maintain pivot 8

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
To ensure the angular displacements of the pivot 8 and the orientation of the blade 1, any control can be provided, but preferably recourse is had to a control consisting of a retort, or in a similar manner.
On the inner end of the pivot 8, is fixed, by keying or otherwise, .a rod 15 to which it is advantageous to give an orientation such that, for the normal orientation of the blade 1, the axis of the rod 15 is located in the plane perpendicular to 1'.arbre 4 which contains the axis of the pivot 8, and there is associated with this link 15 a disc or plate 16 capable of moving axially relative to the shaft 4. A simple control is thus obtained, the displacement of which is minimum for a maximum useful effect.
In the embodiment shown, the disc or plate 16 carries an annular flange 17, concentric with the shaft 4, on which are fixed lugs or pins 18 engaged in buttonholes 19 of the rods 15, where appropriate with the interposition of bearings with bearing members. bearing 20.
Of course, this link could be organized differently; in particular the lugs or pins the could be fixed in the links 15 and engaged in elongated slots in the circular direction, formed in the rim 17.
In its central part, the disc or plate 16 is fixed or integral with a sleeve 21 sliding axially on the sleeve 3 of the hub 2, the two sleeves 21 and 3 being preferably made integral in rotation with one another. by an appropriate connection, by key or other, but advantageously by reducing friction as far as possible.
In the embodiment shown, the connection is obtained by one, or preferably several rows of balls 22 housed in grooves 23 and 24 of the sleeves 21 and 3, also distributed over their peripheries, cages or the equivalent 25 being provided to maintain in place the said rows of balls.
It is easy to realize that when the sleeve 21 receives an axial displacement, the plate or disc 16 is simultaneously moved by determining, by means of the rods 15 and their connections, the changes in the orientation of the pins 1.
The axial displacements of the sleeve 21 can also be obtained in any suitable manner, but advantageously arrangements are made so that these displacements can be controlled from the outside of the hub 2, in particular so as to prevent any penetration of dust inside this hub.
To this end, as in the embodiment shown, it is possible to mount on the shaft 4, a grooved sleeve 26, movable axially, which is made integral in rotation with said shaft, for example by an assembly similar to that already described for the sleeve 21, said sleeve 26 being connected to the sleeve 21 by means of one, or preferably of several rods 27 fixed at one end to the plate or disc 16 and, at the other end, to the rim 28 delimiting the groove 29 of the sleeve 26..Les rods 27 penetrate into the internal space of the hub 2, through openings in the 'flange 7, which openings can, if necessary, be fitted with gaskets.
In the groove 29 is engaged a fork 30, the contact of which with the groove is preferably obtained by means of rolling gears, this fork 30 being able to be actuated in any known manner, not illustrated, to axially displace the sleeve 26 and the associated members.
In fig. 4 there is illustrated an embodiment according to which the mounting of the pivot 8 of the blade 1 is obtained with the interposition of an axial stop or other bearing with running members of the driven type, 31 - replacing for example the bearing radial 11 of the realization already described -.
This stop 31 plays to a certain extent

In the exemplary embodiment shown, there is mounted at the internal end of the pivot 8 a member 32 having at its periphery a conical surface 33 suitable for cooperating with a conjugated conical surface 34 formed on the annular member 5. , in particular in a recess 55 of the latter, the member 32 having one or more housings 36 for one or more elastic members, such as helical springs 37 This or these housings 36 can be closed at the inter - ne, or open at both ends and, in this case, associated with a plate, such as 38, closing the internal ends.
This assembly can be completed by rolling members, such as balls 39 interposed between the elastic member (s).

The arrangement is such that, during assembly, only an extremely small clearance remains between the surfaces 33 and 34, in particular a clearance of the order of that included in the bearings with rolling members, and one gets to account that when the centrifugal force acting on the blade 1 exceeds the opposing force of the elastic member or members 37, the surfaces 33 and 34 will come into contact, providing a more or less energetic wedging of the pivot 8 in

As goes without saying, and as we have moreover already let it be understood, it is understood that the invention is not limited to the agencies more particularly described and shown, but that it also covers modifications and variations, as well as equivalents.
