<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

. R E V E T D: I N V E N T ION "Electrical connection device by plugs or elastic sockets" Fernand, Georges BAC French patent applications in favor of November 3, 1944 and March 30, 1945 (Addition)
The present invention relates to improvements made to electrical connection devices by elastic plugs or sockets.
The known devices have for the most part the defect either of ensuring an insufficient surface area or a number of contact points, or of presenting inconvenient complexity and bulk.
According to the invention, lion avoids these drawbacks by constituting the elastic contact element - plug or socket - by a succession of split elastic rings, preferably conical, held stacked coaxially by a clamping device or by welding, a an interval being formed between the elastic parts of two consecutive rings by means of a spacer sleeve, whether or not integral with each ring.
According to a first embodiment of contact plugs and sockets and in the case where the offset sockets are cylindrical, these are applied to one another by the edge, According to another embodiment and to further improve the Conlitions of contact between the various annular elements, each spacer sleeve is wedged between a conical part of the following elastic arreau and, that is to say, if it is a plug ,. the soul of. the latter on which the rings are threaded, or, in the case of a sleeve, an outer sleeve assembled with all of the rings and spacer sleeves. Said spacer douitles are advantageously, like the coniact rings.
split over all or part of their length,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
On the other hand, the contact rings can have a cylindrical shape, the edge of these rings intended to cooperate with the other connection element forming a projecting bead. The connection between the cylindrical contact ring and the corresponding spacer bush, also cylindrical, can then be made, either by a conical surface portion, or by a double recess, which makes it possible to constitute the one-piece spacer ring-sleeve assembly of constant thickness.
Instead of offering the same diameter and being arranged substantially one after the other, the spacer sleeves can, still according to the present invention, be threaded concentrically into each other, and be fixed together. , either by welding, or by crimping or stapling their ends in a common support possibly forming a protective or fixing sleeve for the entire connection device.
The plugs and sockets in accordance with the invention can be in the form of multipolar plugs or sockets, such as those used in telephone switchboards. It suffices, for this purpose, to have one or more times on the lon-. of the part considered, between two consecutive contact rings, an insulating spacer sleeve, the rings thus isolated from each other being themselves electrically insulated from their support and being able to be connected respectively to different conductors ending in the said plug or socket.
The corresponding socket or plug with which the multipolar member thus formed cooperates is then itself divided longitudinally into as many conductive sections, separated by insulating parts, as there are corresponding series of contact rings. The various series of contact rings thus formed may have external diameters which differ from one series to another, these diameters decreasing towards the end, for the pins, and increasing towards the opening, for the pins. the sockets. The cooperating bodies must then be constituted correspondingly.
A member can also be produced: the multipolar connection by combining, on the same insulating support, one or more plugs and one or more sockets in accordance with the invention, the contact rings respectively constituting these plugs and sockets being arranged concentrically in an alternating manner . The corresponding connection member is then formed by a series of concentric sleeves isolated from one another and each cooperating with one of the sets of contact rings.
The sockets and the plugs which cooperate respectively with the plugs and sockets according to the invention may be provided with one or more annular grooves cut in their contact surface and each capable of receiving the free edge of one of the rings of contact entering into the constitution of the plugs or sockets according to the invention when the plug is fully inserted into the corresponding socket.
This arrangement causes these parts to lock with respect to one another, an additional effort being necessary to release the plug when it is desired to separate said parts.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In all the cases envisaged., The elastic elements of the plugs or sockets can be obtained in a single piece by stamping, die-stamping or turning. In the latter two cases, the exterior and interior surfaces of these elements may be formed by two truncated concentric cones having different angles at the apex. ''
The accompanying drawings show various embodiments of the invention.
In these drawings: Figs, 1 to 4 show various types of contact plugs; fig. 5 to 8 show various embodiments of contact sockets; figs 9 to 12 represent other types of files; Figs, 13 to 16 show other types of sockets; fig. 17 and 18 represent respectively a plug and a multipolar socket conformera. the invention, with their corresponding connecting member; fig. 19 shows a multipolar connection member formed by combining a plug and a socket on a common support.
The file shown in FIG. 1 consists of a series of frustoconical rings comprising a continuous part 1 and a part 2 more flared than the previous one and having a -certain number of slots; for example four, diametrically opposed and directed along the generatrices. These rings are stacked one on top of the other, threaded onto a spindle 3, the tightening of the parts 1 into each other being ensured. by matting the end 4 of the spindle 3. The fiehe thus formed cooperates with a rigid bush 5 ′ whose internal diameter is slightly smaller than that of the larger base of the frustoconical parts 2.
When the plug is inserted into the socket, the frustoconical parts elastically crush and ensure perfect contact, the contact surfaces between the plug and the socket 5 thus being multiplied without the size of the plug exceeding that of a plug of, current type.
In the form shown in fig. 2, parts 1 and 2 of the frustoconical rings have a taper in the opposite direction, these rings forming a kind of 'gutter, which makes it possible to reduce the length of the plug without however modifying the contact surface. The rings are tightened here by a conical washer 6 and a nut screwed onto the threaded end of the spindle 3.
In the example shown in fig 3, the contact rings comprise a cylindrical part 1c and a frustoconical part 2, a recess 8 being formed at the point of connection of the cylinder and the cone. These rings are stacked on top of each other on spindle 3, the free edge of each cylindrical part resting on recess 8 of the next ring. The rings are tightened, as in fig. 1, by matting end 4 of spindle 3.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Fig. 4 shows a variant of fig 3, in which, as in FIG. 2, the contact rings form a channel, the tightening being here provided by 'a washer 6' and a screw 7a with a large head, screwed to the end of the spindle 3.
The bush shown in fig 5 is constituted by a stack of frustoconical rings with double taper comprising a part 9, which has the smallest apex angle and constitutes a solid ring and a part 10, of greater taper and having , like part 2 of the rings forming the plugs shown in Figs, 1 to 4, slots 11 directed along the generatrices of the cone. The solid parts 9 are nested into each other and joined by weld beads 12. The assembly thus formed is supported by a connecting piece having a flared part 13 in which engages the last of the rings 9 constituting the bush, this ring being, connected to part 13 by a weld bead 12a, and a threaded cylindrical part 14 which allows its fixing in a corresponding support.
The sleeve thus formed cooperates with a plug 15, the diameter of which is slightly greater than the internal diameter of the small base of the frustoconical rings 10.
The operation is similar to that of the previously described plugs, the introduction of the plug 15 into the socket causing the rings 10 to open, which leads to perfect contact between the plug and the socket.
In the example shown in FIG. 6, we find the same elements as in FIG. 5,. 'But the rings are here suspended from the connecting piece which has a conical part 13a penetrating inside the first ring 9 and connected to the latter by a weld bead 12a, this connecting piece; itself being crimped in an insulating or metallic part 16.
The socket shown in fig. 7 comprises' cylindrical-conical rings similar to those of the sheet of FIG.
3, the cylindrical parts 9 'resting on each other and the set of rings being arranged inside a cylindrical bush 17, carrying a threaded connection 18 and the free edge 19 of which is folded over the last ring 9 'so as to tighten the rings against each other.
Fig. 8 shows a variant of FIG. 7, in which the cylindrical-conical contact rings have a gutter shape, like those of the plug shown in fig, 4, and are simply welded to each other, the whole being welded to a cylindrical support 20 crimped in a plate 21.
The sheet shown in fig 9 is constituted by a series of elastic rings, preferably stamped, compre-. nant a cylindrical part 1 'and a frustoconical part 2, these two parts being provided with slots, for example four in number diametrically opposed two by two, extending over a fraction of the length of the generatrices of said parts. These rings are stacked one on top of the other, threaded onto a branch 3 and tightened by means of a washer 6 'and an ecru 7. The free and split edge of each cylindrical part 1' is thus wedged between the spindle. 3 and the conical part 2 of the following ring, which ensures perfect contact between the various elements of the assembly.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In the example shown in fig 10, the elastic rings consist of two cylindrical parts 1c and 2 'connected by a frustoconical part 8' and provided, like parts 1c and 2 of the previous example, with longitudinal slits.
When the plug is mounted and the cap screw 7 'tight, the free edge of part 1' of each ring is wedged between pin 3 and the frustoconical part 8 'of the following ring, In order to further increase the contact between part 2 'of the rings and the corresponding socket 5, the free edge of this part forms a bead which can be solid, as in 2a, in the case where the rings are necked or stamped, or rolled or curved as in 2b and 2c respectively in the case of stamped rings.
Fig. It shows a card in which the frustoconical part 2 of the contact rings forms a gutter around the cylindrical part 1 '. This has an increasing diameter and decreasing length from ring to ring from the free end of the plug, the edges of these cylindrical parts being crimped together at 22 in a support piece 23. .
By eliminating the central pin 3, this embodiment allows appreciable lightening of the plug as well as a saving in metal. '.
In the case where the elastic rings constituting the plugs or the sockets are turned or stamped, they can advantageously take the shape shown in FIG. 12, their outer and inner surfaces being formed of two trunks of cones of different angles at the top.
The socket shown in .la f ig. 13 is formed by cylindrical elements .emboutis each having three parts of decreasing diameters, joined by recesses.
The first part 9 'of these rings' forms the spacer sleeve, the second serves to fit the part 9 'of the neighboring ring and the third, 10', provided with longitudinal slots 11, for- me the contact ring. itself. These elements are joined together by welding after fitting into each other.
Part '9' of one of the end elements carries a connection tab 24 and the element located at the other end is nested and welded in a connection ring 25, the latter itself being used in 'an insulating or metallic support 10,
Instead of being connected by means of a cylindrical part and two recesses, the partial '9' and 10 of the constituent elements of the socket can.
be connected by a conical part, in a similar way to what takes place in the plug shown in fig 10, the 'free edge of the cylindrical parts 9', preferably split longitudinally, being wedged, during the fitting of the socket, between the conical part of the next element and an outer sleeve forming a support for the assembly.
In the example shown in FIG. 14, the constituent elements are similar to those of the sheet of FIG. 11 and comprise a conical part 10 and a cylindrical part 9 ', the latter having a diameter and a length decreasing from one element to the other from the end of introduction of the plug 15 into the socket. Said elements are threaded concentrically into one another, the assembly thus formed being itself threaded into a sleeve 26 crimped in a support 16 and the whole being joined by welding. One of the elements comprises, on the free edge of its part 9 ', a connection tab 24.

The bushes shown in FIGS. 15 and 16 have component elements similar to those of the preceding bush. but, in the case of FIG. 15, the free edges of the parts 9 'of these elements are ribbed and crimped together, together with a connection piece 27, in the sleeve 26 which can be, for example, itself embedded in a molded part 28. shown in phantom lines ,, The fixed sleeve '16 does not include an external sleeve, the constituent elements being assembled by serweaving back folded edges of their parts 9; in a ring 25 itself crimped in a support 10.
The three-pole plug shown in fig. 17 is constituted according to the same principle as the sheet of FIG. 11 but prose; -. te contact rings 2a, 2b, 2c, the maximum outside diameter of which decreases from one ring ... to the other one going towards the end of the plug.
Between the spacer sockets 1 'do each of these rings are arranged insulating sleeves 2 Each ring is connected in the support 23, by means ncn shown in the drawing ,, with a different conductor ending in the plug, The dodillc cooperating with this last is constituted by three concentric sleeves 5a, 5b 5c forming steps and whose internal diameters correspond respectively to the outer diameters of the rings 2a, 2b, These sleeves are separated by insulating sleeves 30 and each of them is connected to a different driver
Daun the cozy tripolar represented in fig.
18, the contact rings 10a, 10b and 10c are separated from each other by insulating washers 31 interposed between each ring and the spacer sleeve 9 'which follows it, Screws 32 allow a separate conductor to be connected to each of said rings. The plug which cooperates with this socket is formed. in a known fashion;, in three sections 15a, 15b, 15c cooperating respectively with the rings 10a, 10b, 10c and isolated from each other by washers 33, each of the sections being connected, via the inside of the plug, to a separate conductor. In the surface of the section 15c is cut an annular groove 34 in which the ring 10c engages when the plug is pressed into the socket.
These two parts are thus held in place with respect to one another and an additional effort is required to begin their separation. 1A in fig. 19, there is shown a bipolar connection member constituted by the combination, on the same insulating support 35, of annular elements 1'-2 forming a plug and annular elements 9'-10 forming a socket, The elements l'-2 are arranged in the opposite direction to that adopted in the examples of plugs shown in the preceding figures and the pin 3 on which they are threaded itself constitutes the member for clamping these rings on a conductive base plate 36.
This position makes it possible to significantly reduce the total length of the device by eliminating the clamping members such as washers and bolts placed at the end of the plug in the previous examples. the Insulating support 35 and at the same time serves as a terminal for the connection of one of the conductors ending in the connection unit. The elements 91-10 are clamped by a threaded ring 38 in a cylindrical conductive support 39 held on the support 35 by screws, one of which, 40, also forms a connection terminal.

The connection member which cooperates with that which has just been described consists of two bushes 41 and 42 which engage respectively around the rings 1'-2 and inside the rings 9'-10. Cesdeux sockets are fixed on a common insulating support 43 and are separated by an extension 44 of the latter, also in the form of a socket. Terminals 45 and 46, similar to terminals 37 and 40, allow the connection of the conductors to this member.
In all the devices described above, the possible deflection of the elastic parts can be limited to a value such that the elastic limit is not reached, in order to avoid any risk of permanent deformation in the event of complete crushing of these. parts. To this end, the thickness of the annular space between parts 1 'and 2 or 2' or between parts 91 and 10 or 10 'of two neighboring elements is chosen to be very small. In the case of cards, we can also limit the deflection by limiting. the width of the slots made in the contact rings.
The operational safety conferred by the large number of contact points makes it possible to form the elastic plugs or sockets in a light alloy, tol than duralumin, which presents advantages of lightness, or steel, more economical and wearing less. , as well as a copper alloy.
