<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Closing device for doors.
The present invention relates to a closing device for doors, with a closing lever under the action of a spring and an oil brake, and it is especially characterized in that the pivot of the closing lever is connected by means of a chain to a helical spring in the piston of the brake cylinder and in the brake cylinder, this spring tending to force the piston towards the bottom of the cylinder.
In ordinary type door closers, the pivot of the closing lever is controlled by a spiral spring, of the leaf type or by a helical spring, enveloping the pivot and tending to give it a torque of the same way as a spiral spring. Door closers of this kind often fail, especially as a result of broken springs, for example the springs breaking easily at the ends where they are attached to the pivot or at a fixed point in the pivot housing, or else the springs become worn and tired if they have been in service for a long time.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
for some time.
In the present invention, it has been possible to achieve extraordinary safety against wear and breakage of the springs, more especially by means of the compressed coil spring, embedded between the top of the brake cylinder and the top of the piston, so that a door closer, according to the present invention, will be of unlimited duration. At the same time, the door closer is extremely simple in construction, allowing inexpensive mass production.
In this invention, the use, for example, of an elbow on the pivot of the closing lever is omitted, this elbow being known in door closers with oil brakes, consisting of a cylinder and a piston, in which the piston also must be constructed. in a relatively complicated way.
Since the brake piston in a door closer according to the present invention directly compresses the spring, the closing lever requires only a pivot adjustment, in this case in a known manner by means of a pawl. a ratchet wheel attached to the pivot, so as to force the closing lever to take the most advantageous position, if the door closer is fitted, while in a door closer of the type,; ie: ation , in addition to this adjustment, the elbow must be executed so as to assume the correct position.
According to the invention, the door closer can be constructed in such a way that the pivot of the closing lever is disposed at one end of the oil-tight housing, with one end of the piston resting in a bearing in the bottom of the door. said casing, the other end projecting through a cover into the casing while at the opposite end of the bottom of the casing, another bearing is provided in order to hold the lower end of the pivot, so that the pivot of the closing lever can be moved from one side of the housing to the other, while at the same time the housing cover

turns do 180 (> around the pivot.
From this ma: liè, l'8, le [[l '; \ a8!' Ev,.! E-lyn Le: can also be used t'len for gates s 1 'e to, 1> a.nt on the left than for doors closing on the right, especially since it is possible, without difficulty, to place the pivot on any side of the housing.
Further and according to the invention, the door closer can be constructed so that the cylinder is near the bottom provided with a recess, which is connected through an oil passage to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the other end of the cylinder and in such a way that the piston, near its bottom end, is provided with a groove, which is' connected through, passages at the upper end of the piston, the said recess and said groove being arranged in such a way that the oil, controlling the movement of the piston during the last part of the movement of the piston towards its bottom position, can freely return through the passages, into the piston,
while the piston control is suspended during the last part of the piston movement towards its bottom position. In this way, the braking effect of the closing lever is brought about extremely, easily to be terminated, if the door is almost closed, so that during the last part of its closing movement, the door will reach a speed sufficient to overcome any friction which may exist in the door frame and will engage easily.
However, under certain conditions, it may be desirable to change the speed of the door closing in a special way with respect to existing special conditions. If, for example, the door closer is used for entrance doors, which normally are not used. only by isolated persons at certain intervals and if this door is not opened wide, it may be desirable that the door not remain open too long, in this case, because the wind can drive away dust and dirt from the street through the door.
In a number of other cases in which the door closer can be used, for example for shop doors which are traversed by one or more persons at very short intervals, as well as, in workshops, For example, bicycle warehouses, or for large doors where passage is relatively slow, it may be desirable to delay the effect of the door closer so that the door or porte cochere is kept open. for a while.
Each goal can be achieved by dividing the closing period into two periods at different speeds, so that, if the door is' wide open, the delay effect will occur and only up to a certain closing point, for example, when the door is opened at an angle of 80, after which the fastest normal closing of: The door will begin and end in closing without any resistance.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
This retarding effect is achieved by the opening of the valves, mentioned above, in the coroulation of the bulb in the brake cylinder, this opening being very narrow, while at least one other passage is provided. towards the cylinder. In this additional passage, a very thin needle or conical valve is recessed to regulate the flow, and the valve opening is placed at a suitable point in the path of the piston, away from it. the normal control valve towards the bottom of the cylinder, so that the opening is not covered by the piston at the instant the rapid closing is to begin, with the result that the oil can then move faster on the opposite side of the cylinder, through the deflection,
while, during the preceding period of the closing movement, it could only move through a strongly constricted valve opening or at a considerably slower speed. If desired, one or more additional valves can be placed at different distances from the upper position of the piston, in order to make it possible to choose between different angles of the door for the beginning of the rapid closing, by opening the corresponding valve. , while the other valve (s) are kept closed.
The provision of a groove in the piston, to connect the oil return passages through, through the length of the piston during the final gate closing period, as mentioned in the embodiment described first, can not be made in the present embodiment, since the groove, when it brings the additional opening of the valve to the normal deflection of the oil, would cause an accelerated return, but of short duration, of the flow of gas. oil at too early a connection, in particular before the piston has passed over the said valve opening.
To replace the groove and several passages in the piston, a single passage, opening laterally to the piston by means of a recess in the lower end of the cylinder, is employed so that the passage in the piston forms an angle . Furthermore, the piston is provided with one or two longitudinal passages for the oil, but in the opposite direction, so that they come into operation when the door is being opened and in this way, the piston is moved
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
its position of: 'melts in the direction of the pivot by the traction of the cat, which in this way overcomes the resistance of the closing spring which is compressed at the same time.
These passages are provided with ball valves which, during the movement of the piston in the opposite direction, will be closed by the oil pressure. And cut off the flow of oil, so that the oil is only able to drain. flow by the deviation. In order to ensure this closure of the valves, it may be advantageous to allow the passages to follow a broken line, so that the part in which the ball valve is disposed. is formed by a transverse bore in the piston, so that the seat of the valve can be horizontal or approximately horizontal and that the ball, when the valve opens, is lifted from its seat and falls back into his seat as it closes.
In door closers of the first form of execution the adjustment will most often be carried out at the factory, but in this model also a subsequent adjustment can be made, if necessary; this case however; it will be necessary to delay or accelerate the entire closing movement. In the improved embodiment, it is possible to delay the closure for the first part only, without affecting the normal subsequent closure. If it is not desired to make use of the delay action, the door is only opened sufficiently for normal passage and then it closes quickly.
If, however, it is to be kept open for a longer period of time, it is open to the desired opening and permitted by the conditions below the position at which the delay action comes into force. Unlike hitherto known door closers, in which the connection between the closing lever and the brake piston is established through an elbow, it is possible to use the present door closer at doors opening up to to 270.
The setting of the control valve for the first stage of a door's closing movement is a function of three factors, which can be varied to a large extent with respect to each individual door, notably the opening. maximum of the door, the opening angle at which the closing speed should be increased to its normal speed, as well as the time it takes for the door to move.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
cer between these two angles.
As soon as these factors have been determined; direct adjustment is possible. execution
Likewise, in the / improved form, the control valves are provided with oil-tight covers and the cover, through which the pivot of the closing lever passes, is fitted with a special gland, s' applying in an oil-tight manner around the pivot. In addition, an oil charger has been provided, from which the oil can be supplied, to make up for losses.
At the bottom of the housing, the pivot can advantageously be provided with a chain pinion, which, for connection with the chain, is provided with a cam extending over part of the circumference of the wheel, corresponding to two teeth and a hollow, in which there is provided a hole for a bolt through the end link of the chain.
In addition, the door closer will work in the same way whether it is placed normally or inverted, that is, with the closing lever facing down,: \ provided, however, that, in the latter case, the piston is reversed 180
The use of a spring, to press the piston into its bottom position, and of a chain, to connect it to the pivot, will still give the result that, if it is desirable to close the door at a greater speed than that for which the door closer is set, for example to an elevator door, it will be possible to close the door simply, without the door closer exerting any resistance, the chain being simply folded back.
In what follows, the invention is described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

In FIG. 1, 1 is the pivot of the closing lever, housed in a housing 2, permanently fixed to a brake cylinder 3, inside which a brake piston 4 can move. The position of the piston shown in this drawing will always be referred to hereinafter as the bottom position of the piston. The piston can be driven from its bottom position against the action of a helical spring.
5 by a chain 6, one end of which is fixed to the piston, while the other end is attached to the pivot 1, for example using flanges 7 and 8 on the pivot, between which the last link of the chain is recessed and held in place with a bolt 9.
As can be seen from FIG. 2, the pivot 1 protrudes through a cover 10 applied to the crankcase and its passage is made oil-tight by means of an ordinary bonnet-type gland.
The pivot 1 is provided with a pair of fixed wheels 11 which, by engaging with a pawl on the closing lever, will lock this lever in the usual manner in relation to the pivot 1. The control lever closure and its pawl are not shown in the drawing.
As can be seen from FIG. 1, the piston is provided with ball valves, the balls 12 and 13 of which are prevented by a pin'14, passing through the. piston, to move too far from their seat; Both crankcase 2 and cylinder 3 are filled with oil. When the door closer is fitted and the door is open, the. pivot 1 rotates so that the chain 6 exerts a traction on the piston 4, to move it away from its bottom position and compress - thus the spring 5. During this operation, the oil can pass freely from the upper side of the piston at its lower side through the ball valves in the pistons.
When the door is closed again, this is done by the spring 5, by its pressure against the piston 4 transmitting to the pivot 1, by the chain 6, the moment of rotation necessary for the closing of the door. the door. While the door is closing, the spring will push the piston towards its bottom position and the two ball valves will shut off the flow of oil, so that oil cannot pass from one end of the cylinder to the other only through the passage shown in Fig. 2, the opening of which can be adjusted by an adjusting screw 16 so that it

it is possible to adjust, by turning this screw, the degree of speed with which the door closes.
As emerges from Figure 2, the cylinder, near its bottom, is provided with a recess 17. A groove 18 is cut in the piston and is connected by guides 19 to the top of the piston. As a result, the piston, during the last part of its movement towards its bottom position, will itself create a passage for the oil from one side of the piston to the other, so that the The braking effect for all purposes is continuous and the final period of the door closing can take place at great speed.
As emerges from the. figure 1, the pivot 1 rests da @ s the right side of the casing 2. On the left side of the same casing, a bearing 20, of. the same shape and size as that of the pivot 1 is provided in the drawing. The cover 10 is constructed so that, if the screws holding it in the housing 2 are loosened, it can be enleyed, rotated 180 around the pivot 1 and be replaced in the housing 2, in which case the pivot. 1 will rest in the bearing on the left side of housing 2 (see figure 1) and will use bearing 20.
In this posit @@@ of the pivot 1, the spring and the chain will involve it a moment (the @ ota-ation opposite to that involved in the position of: Figure 1. In this way it is possible, by an operation quick and easy to change the door closer in such a way that, having been adjusted for a left opening door, it can be adjusted for a right opening door. The cover is held in place on the housing by means of screws 21 provided at the corners.
Since, as a result of long operation, an oil loss cannot be entirely suppressed, the cover 10 is, as can be seen from FIG. 3, provided with an oil screw 22, which can be removed. be loosened, if the door closer must be refilled. The free end of cylinder 3 can, as shown, be closed by means of a screw plug 23.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 4, that is. provided with a delay device, the groove is cut in the piston and there is only one passage 19 for the return of the hul0 during the final phase of closing the door; this passage is at a right angle and opens partly as before, at the top of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
piston and partly on one side of the piston near its opposite end and, shortly before the piston has reached its bottom position, this latter opening will be in front of the recess 17 in the cylinder, so that the brake resistor will be fully suspended., as described above.
The delay device is constituted by the control valve 16, by the bypass 15 for the oil, by the form of execution described at the beginning, adjusted so as to delay the passage of the oil, while, apart from this, connection between passage 15 and the cylinder, another opening with control valve 24 is provided at such a point on the path of piston 4, from the upper end to the lower end of the cylinder, that the distance corresponds to the angle of the door at which the normal closing speed should take place., During the first part of the closing movement, until the valve 24 is released by the piston, the closing speed, due to the slow passage of oil through valve 16, will be very slow and will not rise at normal speed,
until the valve 24 also begins to operate. This delay device can operate at any opening angle between 80 and 270; the only condition for its correct functioning is that the door is opened sufficiently wide. 25 and 26 show two additional control valves, in order to vary the time of suspension of the retardation effect and the onset of the higher closing speed. 12 shows a valve ball in one of the oil passages of the piston, 30 is a plug, closing the valve chamber and 31, a cam preventing the valve ball, 12 from coming in front of the opening. of passage.
FIG. 4 also shows the use of a Thai pinion 27, on which the chain 6 is wound as a result of its attachment to the wheel by means of a bolt 28.
In order to eliminate the use of a cable gland with a cap, which should be sealed, the sealing of the pivot passage 1 through the cover is effected by means of a cylindrical rubber sleeve 32, applying in a sealed manner around the pivot and held under pressure against the inner face of the cover,,

In order to avoid the loss of oil at the adjustment screws 16, 24, 2 @ and 26, these are placed so that the access to them is closed by means of a 'threaded plug 33 waterproof. oil.
The exterior appearance of the door-form of the present embodiment is the same as that of the embodiment described above and, as can be seen from the drawings, it is attractively constructed. in modern lines; it can be mounted easily, since the spring does not require any adjustment and its design allows it to be placed inside doors, even for parts opening outwards.
