<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Tightening key.
The present invention relates to a key for tightening bolts, nuts, or any other components, such as, for example, automobile engine spark plugs, and its aim is to make it possible to perform this operation in keeping the key constantly applied to the component to be tightened.
It also aims to make this tightening easier and faster and to allow the key to occupy a particularly small footprint when it is not in use.
This key is characterized essentially in that it comprises a head intended to take by one of its ends on the member to be tightened and provided at its other end with tenons imprisoning a ball joint which is crossed by an operating rod controlling the rotation of the head thanks to its introduction successively into the notches formed, for example by milling or by cutting, between the tenona.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, the head has towards one end a bore having a shape

corresponding to that of the member to be clamped and which follows towards the other end a circular bore.
When it has been brought into the extension of the head injury, the operating rod can slide in the patella and be retracted inside the head.
The accompanying drawings show purely by way of example how the invention can be carried out.
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of the assembly of the apparatus, the operating rod being in the position in which it controls the clamping.
Figure 2 is a corresponding plan view.
FIG. 3 is a view in vertical section, the operating rod having been retracted inside the head.
Figure 4 is a detail view.
This key includes a head 1 intended to take at one end on the nut, bolt, etc. to be tightened and provided at its other end with tenons 2 created by cutting, milling, etc., notches 3 in the head 1.
These tenons 2 imprison a ball 4 which is crossed by a rod 5 serving to control the rotation of the head 1 with a view to causing the clamping.
The head 1 has towards one end a bore 6 having a shape corresponding to that of the member to be clamped; this shape may for example, as shown, be hexagonal as well as the corresponding outer contour 61 (fig.3 and 4); this bore follows towards the other end a bore 7 of circular shape, just like the corresponding outer contour 71.
As can easily be understood, the ball joint 4 can be rotated by the operating rod 5 and this rotation allows the placement of this rod 5 successively in the various notches 3, each time producing a rotary

partial of the head 1 and consequently of the member to be clamped and that without having to move the head 1 which can remain applied around the latter.
An important property of the device is that the rod 5 can drive the head 1 not only in a position perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the latter (position 5 in figure 1), but also (as shown at 51) in a similar manner. oblique position, which greatly increases the ease and convenience of use of the device.
When the ball joint 4 and the rod 5 have been arranged in a position such that the latter is located in the extension of the bore 7, this rod can, by sliding, be returned inside the head 1 and “retract” into it, as shown in FIG. 3, which allows the assembly to occupy a very small space during its transport.
The rod 5 is provided at each of its ends with a rim 8 obtained for example by hammering and serving to limit its sliding movement relative to the ball 4 and to prevent it from falling outside.
One of these flanges also forms a stop with respect to two successive tenons, so as to prevent the sliding of the rod 5 in the position shown in FIG. 1.
Numerous variants can be introduced in practice without departing from the principles which are the basis of the invention.
It is thus in particular that the tool can be manufactured in all dimensions and that the number of sections of the end of the head 1 taking on the member to be clamped can vary according to the shape of the latter.
The number of tenons which is four in the example described and which gives rise to a cross arrangement can also be modified.
