<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The Company: MANUFACTURE BELGE DE CEMBLOUX, Société Anonyme, in Gem.bloux (Belgium). Device for tightening the wool of a scalpel or similar utensil.
,THE). present invention relates to scalpels and other utensils of the same type provided with a handle comprising two parallel supports between which the blade is clamped.
In these devices, the clamping of the blade. is usually obtained with the aid of a fork, the branches of which oscillate around one of the supports and of which the part joining these branches cooperates with a convex friction surface provided on the outer side of the other support. .
This device has drawbacks, since the tightening depends on both. elements rubbing against each other and exposed to wear and it is found that this clamping quickly becomes defective and, after a relatively short period of time, the blade is no longer properly held in place.
The present invention aims to remedy this drawback and the device which is the subject thereof is characterized in the main order in that the clamping is caused by a lever which 'can oscillate around a' horizontal axis por tee by. a 'fork which takes around the parallel supports of the handle and whose branches usually formed by flats, are arranged horizontally-

laugh and are fixed rigidly and preferably ground to the supports, this lever being provided with a cam which is integral with it and which has on its periphery an edge can act, during the rotation of the lever, on one of the supports of the blade via an elastic blade / blade carried by the fork,
generally using lateral tenons including this strip. is fitted, so as to cause the. bringing this support closer to the other support.
A device of great rigidity and certain functioning is thus produced, in which the play which may possibly be manifested by use is automatically taken up without denying the fear of a change in the degree of. Tightening.
The accompanying drawings show by way of example a scalpel provided with the clamping device according to the invention.
Figure 1 is an elevational view of this scalpel.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view of the upper part of the scalpel, the difforent elements being in the non-tightening position.
Figure 5 is a life similar to Figure 2, with the elements in the clamped position.
Figure 4 is a side view intended to show more specifically the mounting of the elastic lamella.
Figure 5 is a section through the line V-V in Figure 2.
In the attached drawings, 1 designates the mmche of the scalpel which ends with two parallel supports 2-3 provided on the side directed towards the space 4 located between them, with grooves 5-6 in which the blade 7 fitted with 'a heel 8 coming, in. mounting position, rest on the upper edge of the shorter bracket 2.
The blade clamping device comprises a lever 9 which oscillates around a horizontal axis 10 carried by a fork or a frame which takes around the supports 2-3 and whose branches usually formed by plates 11-12 are arranged horizontally and are not fixed. rigidly and preferably welded to supports 2-3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
With the lever 9 forms a cam 13 which is, on its periphery, provided with an edge 14 which can act on an elastic strip 15, carried by the fork 11-12 by means of lateral tenons 16 of which. this slat is provided.
In the non-clamping position, the lever 9 occupies the pos ition shown in FIG. 3 and the strip 15 is slightly curved towards the exterior; during the. tightening, lever 9 is pivoted from position 9 to bring it into po si t ion 91 (fig.3) of. Figure 3 and during this pivoting, the edge 14 acts on the blade 15 which, for its part, bears on the support 3 while flattening, so as to bring this support 3 closer to the other support 2 and to cause the blade to clamp 7.
On the periphery of the cam 13, there is also provided a flat part 17 which follows the edge 14, and which maintains the clamping when the lever 9 has been stopped in its rotation by its meeting with the handle and when, simultaneously, the edge 14 has passed upwards the horizontal plane passing through the axis 10.
It is easily understood that, under these conditions, we will have all guarantees regarding the permanence of the clamping, since the clamping is caused by the intervention, of an elastic element 15 which can match the shape of the outer side of the support to be brought together and that, in the event of wear, it can be compensated for and taken up automatically.
