BREVET D' I N V E N T I O N. Société dite: BOWDEN (ENGINEERS) LIMITES - de nationalité anglaise, Viotoria Road, Willeeden Junotion, Londres N.W.10 - Angleterre PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX ACCOUPLEMENTS DE TUYAUX FLEXIBLES.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

PATENT OF I N V E N T I O N. Company known as: BOWDEN (ENGINEERS) LIMITS - of English nationality, Viotoria Road, Willeeden Junotion, London N.W. 10 - England FLEXIBLE HOSE COUPLINGS.
Having been the subject of a patent application in Great Britain N 12840/41 dated October 4, 1941 (provisional application) and April 7, 1942 (final application.)
The present invention relates to improvements to component elements of flexible hose couplings of the kind comprising a flexible hose having tubular layers of resilient material, such as rubber in various forms, natural or synthetic, reinforced with one or more tubular layers. layers of reinforcing material disposed between these layers of elastic material, an inserted member, tubular, rigid, internal and a sleeve or metal ferrule or orferentially continuous which is formed of a material suitable for contraction, such as brass,
'an alloy of aluminum, mild steel or phosphor bronze, and which is contracted to secure the pipe to the inserted member (which may be formed of the same material as the sleeve or ferrule), and which are suitable , and more especially intended, to be used in conjunction with pipes for medium and high pressures, (i.e. pipes suitable for pressures of 35 Kos through om2 and above) such as those used for hydraulic transmission or power pneumatic, om for the transport of gaseous, liquid, semi-solid or viscous substances, under pressure, when it is very important that neither the sleeve or ferrule, nor the inserted member can be expelled or detached from the pipe,
at the same time that the attachment tensionsf do not prove to be too severe for the ma-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
third of the pipe.
With such couplings, it is necessary to seal or secure the pipe to the inserted member in a sufficiently intimate manner to prevent any escape of fluid, and also to hold or grip the pipe between the sleeve and the tube. aired member with sufficient force to prevent any risk of it being expelled axially by the internal fluid pressure, and the contraction pressure which must be exerted for this latter purpose usually exceeds that which is necessary to achieve a fluid-tight seal, and can be so high that there is a danger of breaking or unnecessarily straining the rubber walls of the hose, and this danger is increased when the rubber or other elastic material is depleted. low elasticity,
such as for example the caoutchoua called "oourt", or certain rubber substitutes whose use was imposed by the necessities of the war.
In contemplating obviating this difficulty, the present invention is characterized by the formation of a separate securing zone, located between the sealing zone and the end of the pipe, in which the sleeve or ferrule is. contracted so forcefully as to displace the rubber or the like of the inner and outer layers sideways into this area, exposing the reinforcing layer on its opposite sides and determining a tightening or energetic fixing of the uncovered portion, means being provided for the escape of the outchouc thus displaced from this exposed zone.
Generally the exposed reinforcement or frame is maintained by direct contact with the sleeve or ferrule and the inserted member, but the cases where one or more separate elements are involved in the socket are not excluded, provided that such elements @ n 'do not significantly weaken the grip of the tube on the inserted organ. For example, a metal ring may be interposed between the sleeve or ferrule and the pipe, and is fixed axially with the sleeve or ferrule as a consequence of the oon- traction operation.
The main reason for the rupture of the coupling, under the effect of the considerable fluid pressure prevailing inside the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
pipe, is the insufficiency of the grip, on the inserted member, of the rubber or the like between the reinforcing material and the inserted member, and since, according to the present invention, the reinforcement or reinforcement is securely held at. against an overall displacement, and offers a great resistance to elongation when the pipe is sealed, by the sleeve or ferrule, on the inserted member, the end of the pipe remains held in place. securely between the sleeve or ferrule and the inserted member with higher internal pressures than those generally possible hitherto,
or, alternatively, the contraction pressure in the sealing area can be reduced, which is particularly advantageous when "short" rubbers are used to establish the pipe,
It is essential for the purposes of the invention that material moved from the uncovered or exposed area can escape in either direction.
Material escaping to or beyond the end of the pipe, i.e. to the left in fig. 1, may be retained in the component element of the coupling, in which case the sleeve or ferrule will be formed and dimensioned in such a way, before contraction ,, and the contraction will be conducted in such a way that a space is maintained between the pressure gauge or ferrule, and inserted the member / or other parts of the coupling, to receive the moved material.
The escape in the other direction, i.e. to the right of fig. 1, occurs by displacement of the material of the pipe, and the provision of a suitable space between the surface of the pipe and the sleeve or ferrule, will facilitate this escape and will also serve for the reception of any material from the pipe displaced towards the securing zone by the contraction in the sealing zone.
In accordance with the main and preferred form of arrangement of the invention, the pipe is left, where the reinforcement is to be exposed, of the same thickness, before the crushing operation, as the rest of the pipe. pipe inside the sleeve or ferrule.
A modified method can, however, be used to reduce the amount of pipe material to be moved by removing portions of this
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
material before the crushing operation; in particular a ring of material can be removed from the outer elastic layer, and this ring can extend in depth to the reinforcement, or else, in the case of pipes of larger dimensions, it may be possible to remove a portion or all of the inner layer, or a combination of these methods can be employed, and the remaining material is subsequently displaced by crushing.
It should be understood, however, that the Applicant does not claim the method of establishing a component element (or component elements established by such a method), in which the two faces of the reinforcement are exposed, thus removing the material from the pipe. , without allowing it to be displaced by crushing, this method (and the component elements established in accordance with it) forming the subject of its English patent 550,891.
While in the forms or arrangements of the invention specifically described herein, the uncovered area in which the reinforcement is directly gripped between the sleeve or ferrule and the inserted member, extends to the end, or substantially up. the end of the reinforcement, shapes or arrangements in which it does not extend in this way are not excluded.
The invention is applicable to pipe arrangements in which the reinforcement is of a composite nature, for example a layer of metal braided with one or more adjacent layers of fabric.
The reinforcements generally encountered in pipes for medium and high pressure are of a braided structure, and can be made either of metal or of textile material. The Applicant has found that a reinforcement consisting of one or more layers of braided metal, that is to say groups of high-strength steel wires, braided in the tubular form, trapped between two layers of fabric (which can be either braided or woven) gives very good results when used for the purposes of the invention.
In cases where the pipe has a plurality of layers of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
reinforcement separated by rubber or the like, the latter can also be expelled by the contraction of the manohon or ferrule, so that the reinforcing oouohes are brought together and held on the inserted organ in the same way as with a diaper unique reinforcement.
Alternatively, part of one or more of the layers of reinforcing material and part of the elastic material can be removed, leaving the other or the other layers of reinforcing material intact, which is or are gripped when the remaining portion of the elastic material in the securing zone is displaced by the contraction.
The inserted member may be provided with a groove at its periphery, and a portion of the exposed reinforcement material may be pressed by the sleeve or ferrule into the groove, or, alternatively, the exposed reinforcement may be. folded around a rib or rim of the inserted organ.
An additional contraction zone, in which the maximum stress is less than that of the sealing zone, can be provided to stop the escape of the rubber beyond the end of the inserted member which is engaged in the pipe, a space for receiving the displaced elastic material preferably being provided, as shown in the accompanying drawings, between this zone of least stress and the sealing zone for receiving the rubber displaced towards it,
The contraction can be completed at the subjugation zone before performing the contraction at the sealing zone, or the two contractions can be carried out in one operation, the contraction starting first at the subjugation zone. ,
that is to say by moving or forcing dies closing radially, first of all contracting the sleeve or ferrule where the reinforcement or braided reinforcement is to be exposed, before the dies reach the sleeve or ferrule in the sealing area, and then to complete or complete the contraction simultaneously.
A sleeve or ferrule of constant wall thickness is well suited for the abutments of the invention.

It should be understood that when, in the present specification, reference is made to contraction of the sleeve or ferrule, one means a contraction which produces its permanent deformation.
To the effect that the invention can hearth more easily understood, reference will be made to the appended drawings, in which; Fig. 1 is a longitudinal elevational view and in section, in which the lower half of the view shows the parts ready for contraction and the upper half shows the shape of the parts after contraction, and Fig. 2 is a view of the sleeve or ferrule in its initial form. Fig. is a longitudinal elevation, partly in section, of a modified coupling component member, having an angled insert.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal elevation, showing a modified connection between the inserted member and the nut used to couple the component member, and fig, b is a view, half in section, of the sleeve or ferrule employed in this arrangement , Fig.6 is a longitudinal elevation of a shape or arrangement similar to that shown in Fig.4, but modified for use with an inserted elbow member.
The pipe coupling component member, shown, includes a sleeve or. ferrule 1 in the form of a bottle, and an inserted member 2, as well as a flexible pipe 3 which comprises inner and outer tibular layers, 4, 5, of rubber or the like, and an intermediate reinforcing layer 6, in particular formed of an organ braided in wire, which may include internal and external layers of braided fabric.
The sleeve or ferrule is, as usual, contracted in a radial direction, in zone 7, to apply the pipe to the inserted organ with sufficient pressure as to seal the pipe and the inserted organ in such a way as to prevent the leaks and, for this purpose, the contraction of the sleeve or ferrule must be limited so that the layers of rubber or in any case the inner layer 4, are not broken or torn.
However, such a grip of the pipe on the inserted member may be insufficient to prevent relative axial displacement between the pipe and the inserted member, under the effect of fluid pressure inside the pipe, and for this reason.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
reason, one contracts the sleeve or ferrule in the zone 8, with a high pressure such that the rubber of the two internal and external layers, flows sufficiently as to expose the reinforcement or braiding 6, and this member is gripped strongly and directly between the sleeve or ferrule and the Inserted member,
The inserted member has a continuous peripheral or annular groove, 9, in the contraction zone 8, and the exposed reinforcement or braiding is pushed back into this groove, and locked or fixed axially with the inserted member.
The groove can be interrupted circumferentially, so as to also lock or fix the frame or treasage against a rotational movement with respect to the inserted member, or the frame or braiding can be folded over a rib or ring, peripheral, continuous or interrupted. The direct engagement or attachment of the frame or braiding is usually sufficient to prevent such relative rotation.
The neck 10 of the sleeve or ferrule is engaged by the thickened part 11 of the inserted member and, consequently, the shoulder 12 of the sleeve or ferrule closes that of the ends of the ring which contains the end of the pipe. A cavity 13 exists between the end of the pipe and the end wall 12 when the contraction begins and another cavity is stored between the zones 7 and 8, formed in the example illustrated by the clearance between the wall of the outer snorkel and the sleeve. or ferrule, before the latter is contraoted. The pipe is shown expanded by a portion in the form of a collar 15, in which the groove 9 is formed.
The groove 16 formed between the collar 15 and the enlarged part it forms part of the cavity 13,
When it is desired to more completely prevent the escape of the rubber beyond the end of the inserted member which is engaged in the pipe, an additional zone of contraction 17 can be produced between the end of the inserted member engaged. in the pipe and the sealing zone 7, preferably approximately around the end of the inserted organ; the maximum stress in this zone 17 is less than the maximum in zone 7.
The contraction of zone 8 can be performed before the contraction of the sealing zone is started or completed,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Alternatively, the contraction of the zones 7, 8 can be carried out in one operation, the contraction in the securing zone being started before the contraction in the sealing zone and, when producing one or more zones of additional pressure, 17 , all pressure zones can be produced in one operation. The Applicant prefers to employ matrices that are movable in the radial direction to generate the different pressure zones, but other means may be suitable, such as the method by impact or percussion or a similar method.
The main portion of the sleeve or ferrule may be formed of a cylinder of uniform wall thickness, as shown, or it may consist of a cylinder having one or more external annular enlargements, local, with one or more, or each of the pressure zones. The dies can receive a suitable profile or steps, in order to produce a greater contraction pressure where the metallic reinforcement is to be exposed than in zone 7 or zone 17.
Alternatively, if suitable enlargements are provided, co-linear or aligned dies or a converging die may be employed, the outside diameters of the enlargements being chosen, in the former case so that the dies first begin to contract. the widening around the part of the pipe to be stripped, i.e. where the reinforcement or braiding is to be exposed, after which the dies start to contract the sealing zone 7 and then the zone 17, and finally them contractions continue simultaneously.
The inner end of the manohon or ferrule can be flared at 18, that is to say conformed by impact or percussion, or otherwise pushed back, or it can simply be provided with a fillet.
The pressure gauge or ferrule can be formed from a sheet or a tube, with the aid of press tools, or it can be established by machining from a solid bar or a tube.
The inserted member can be machined from a bar. The sleeve or ferrule and the inserted member can, in certain cases, be formed in one piece, but generally the Applicant prefers to constitute them by separate pieces.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The enlarged protruding portion of the inserted member can fit exactly into the neck of the bottle-shaped sleeve or ferrule, and in some cases it can be connected axially, or at the same time axially and orally, to this neck, c 'that is to say by radially contracting the neck in or around a profiled part of the inserted member, as described in the English patent 540,591 of the applicant, but the coupling arrangements illustrated in the present application, are established, between other, to avoid this operation. A space for the escape of rubber may however be left between the end of the sleeve or ferrule and the inserted member.
In the arrangement shown in fig.l, the inserted member has a male joint end, 19, conical, spherical or the like, for its engagement with a female counterpart on the part to which the component coupling element must be assembled. The inserted member can, however, constitute the female part if desired, or it can be externally threaded to form a male junction.
The neck of the sleeve or ferrule is inserted into the nut 20 used to form the bond between the end of the seal 19 and its counterpart, and a conical lip 21 is formed, with the aid of a suitable tool, at the end. of the neck, this lip engaging behind a conical rim 22 formed by one of the walls of a groove 23 of the nut.
The inserted member is then engaged through the neck of the sleeve or ferrule with a good fit and it comprises a conical portion 24 in order to come to bear against the conical internal surgee of the lip, so that when the nut is screwed, the lip of the sleeve or ferrule is securely secured between the nut and the inserted member, and held against both axial and radial displacement.
In addition, the solidity of the organ inserted in this place is considerably increased by the sleeve or ferrule which shelters it.
When applying this method of retaining the nut on elbow fittings or other angular connectors, as shown in fig. 3, the Applicant prefers, as illustrated, to avoid the use of an elbow sleeve or ferrule. or angular, but use
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
an angled or angular inserted member and firmly securing the sleeve or ferrule thereto by crushing a portion of the neck of the sleeve or ferrule in a groove 25 of the inserted member, or around a rib or a projection of this organ,
and this inserted member may be arranged to receive a separate connector 26 which is to provide joint contact with the associated coupling unit. In this case the inserted member is dilated at its outer end, to form a retaining lip 27, the lip engaging behind a twist 22 of the nut while the joint connector is provided with a conical portion 28 for subjecting the lip between itself and the oror when the latter is screwed, and thus forms a closed seal between the seal connector and the inserted member.
Alternatively, (see Figures 4 and 5) the neck of the sleeve or screw may include an external groove 28a and several, in particular four, axial slots 29, made in the length of the neck to its external end, in order to allow it to be deformed enough to pass through the opening forced into the nut by the flange 30.
A tool this then introduced to open the closed end, behind the rim 30 of the nut, which rim then penetrates into the groove of the neck and thus prevents the hole from being removed from the end of the sleeve or ferrule. , without hindering the freedom of rotation of the nut. The side wall 31 of the groove 28a forms a thrust face when the nut is screwed on. The neck should not necessarily be split, but it should be of a size to allow it to pass through the opening of the nut and, when engaged in the hole, the neck is dilated in the neck. throat of the nut with the aid of a tool such as a chaser, flusher or the like.
These latter nut mounting provisions are also applicable to elbow fittings or other angular fittings (see fig. 6), since the inserted member and the neck of the sleeve or ferrule can be ruffled by crushing the sleeve or ferrule in the socket. throat 28 of the lnaéré organ, 3t in connection with whether it is the manohon or ferrule, the inaerated organ may be provided with a groove 32, the part of the inserted organ situated beyond the throat 32 being dilated back 10 flange 30 of the nut,
and a separate gasket connector 26 being inserted
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
d in this end of the inserted member and being fixed to said member by Inaction or the screwing operation of the nut. The end of the ingested organ may be axially split, if desired, so that it must be closed before it can pass through the opening of the nut.
The éorou can be pivotally mounted on the inserted organ in several other ways, in particular by the. usual method of threading the eorou onto the inserted organ from the internal end of the latter, in order to provide a shoulder of the nut against a thrust face of the inserted organ, or by the methods according to patent application N 356,180 of August 9, 1945, of. Applicant for: "Improvements to pipe couplings", and its English patent 540,489. CLAIMS.
1. The method of establishing a component pipe coupling element suitable for use in conjunction with medium and high pressure pipes, said component element comprising the end portion of a flexible pipe, which comprises inner and outer tubular layers of rubber or similar resilient material, and an intermediate layer of flexible reinforcing material, sealingly fluid-tightly sealed against a rigid inserted member, by the contraction of a metallic sleeve or ferrule or continuous conferencing, of so as to form a sealing zone, characterized by the fact that the sleeve or ferrule is contracted so forcefully, in a separate fixing zone, located between the sealing zone and the end of the pipe,
than to move on both sides the elastic material of the inner and outer layers in this aortic zone to uncover the two faces of the reinforcing layer and to achieve an energetic grip of the sleeve or ferrule and of the organ inserted on the portion placed at uncovered, which does not depend on the elastic material, means being provided to take account of the escape of the rubber thus displaced from this exposed area.
