Suivant
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Si
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

the Company known as: N.V. PHILIPS 'GLOEILPENF'ABR1JN Tight and hermetic seal for a tree crossing a wall
The invention relates to a tight and hermetic seal for a shaft driven by a rotational movement and: optionally by an axial displacement, which passes through a wall. In known devices of this kind, a ring surrounding the shaft is assembled to the wall hermetically but so as to be able to move with the latter; a spring supports this ring against a shoulder of the shaft and thus ensures a tight and hermetic seal. Between the ring integral with the wall, and therefore stationary with respect to the shaft, and the shoulder of the shaft, there is a lubricant, the purpose of which is to reduce the friction between the ring and the shoulder to a minimum.
This lubricant also acts as a seal.
In one of the known forms of construction, the tight or hermetic seal between the ring and the wall consists of a metallic bellows, of cylindrical shape, which surrounds the shaft. In general, the necessary pressure on the ring is provided by this bellows. This form of construction has a drawback: the bellows is very fragile and, moreover, in a plane perpendicular to the shaft, it is very bulky.
Another known device comprises a flat membrane, integral with the ring and the wall, and made of metal or rubber reinforced by a metal disc. To allow movement of the ring, the membrane must be large enough so that it is fragile and complicates assembly; moreover, the forces caused by the pressure of the gas can become very great.
According to the present invention, the ring is made integral with the wall by means of a rubber sheath, which surrounds the shaft; this sheath is connected in a sealed and hermetic manner not only to the ring, but also to a member which is fixed to the wall. This member carries a helical spring which pushes the ring against a shoulder of the shaft.
This form of construction has several advantages: the assembly is very simple, the size is small and the number of components required is very small. The rubber sheath surrounds the tree, so that in a plane perpendicular to this tree, it takes up little space. This sheath is protected against any overpressure, internal or external, of gas or liquid by the helical spring, which, in addition, exerts on the ring the pressure necessary to ensure the seal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
whether the overpressure prevails on the outside or inside or alternately on the two faces of the rubber sheath, this spring can be arranged either inside or outside, or even in the rubber sheath.
Possibly in the latter case, two springs can be provided, one inside and the other outside.
The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it possible to understand how the invention can be achieved, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course, forming part of said invention. Hard in the figure, the shaft 1 must hermetically pass through the wall 2. In this wall, this shaft is carried by a ball bearing 3. The inner ring 9 of the ball bearing, generally wedged on the shaft 1; here acts as a shoulder on which the ring 4 bears. The helical spring 5 presses this ring against the shoulder. The other end of the spring bears against a flange 6, fixed hermetically for example by means of bolts, against the wall 2.
This flange comprises a thin cylindrical sleeve 8, long enough to allow the centering of the ring 4. When the shaft 1 is horizontal, this sleeve 8 prevents contact between the internal limiting surface of the ring 4 and the periphery of the. shaft 1. This contact would cause the ring 4 in the direction of rotation of the shaft 1, which could affect the seal.
The ring 4 is hermetically connected to the flange 6, with the aid of a cylindrical rubber sheath 7, which surrounds the shaft 1; one of the ends of this sheath is fixed to the periphery of the ring 4 and the other to the flange 6. such a rubber sheath, easily deformable, allows the axial displacement of the ring 4 relative to the flange 6 , so that, under the effect of the spring 5, this ring always bears, by its entire surface, against the shoulder 9. During a replacement or a possible repair, the removal of the flange 6 makes it possible to remove the entire seal.
The tightness of the seal is ensured as follows: Suppose that on the left of the wall, the gas is brought to an overpressure. Through the ball bearing 3, this overpressure propagates in the enclosure between the cylindrical bottom of the wall and the outer surface of the rubber sheath. The flange 6 is tightened hermetically against the wall 2. The lubricant between the contacting surfaces of the shoulder 9 and of the ring 4 ensures a sufficient seal between these surfaces, so that the overpressure cannot be transmitted inside. the sheath 7 or the sleeve 8. The overpressure in the space surrounding the rubber sheath 7 exerts a slight radial pressure on the latter. However, this does not result in deformation of the sheath because the inner surface of the latter is supported by the breaths of the spring 5.
When an overpressure prevails to the right of the wall 2, it propagates in the space formed by the clearance between the shaft 1 on the one hand and the flange 6 and the sleeve 8 on the other hand. This overpressure then propagates through the gap between the ring 4 and the sleeve 8, in the space included inside the rubber sheath 7. However, all these spaces are limited by the aforementioned seals, so that the overpressure fails to spread further. In this case, and in particular when the overpressure increases, it is necessary to reinforce the sheath 7. The spring 5 can then be placed outside this sheath.
Yes
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the overpressure occurs alternately on the two faces, it is necessary to reinforce the sheath 7 on the two faces. This result can be obtained by vulcanizing the spring 5 in the rubber during the manufacture of the sheath or else by distributing the required pressure over two springs, one of which is disposed inside and the other at the bottom. outside of the sheath. The seal described allows not only a rotation of the shaft 1, but also an axial displacement of this shaft. In this case, under the influence of the pressure of the spring 5, the rubber sleeve 7 will deform in the longitudinal direction.
